Very sad............

Jordan Robertson has been arrested for dangerous driving after a collision on Christmas Day.

Robertson was driving up the M1 when he collided with a Ford Galaxy belonging to Omar Mohamed. Mr Mohamed was airlifted to hospital but unfortunately died later.

Other forums are speculating why but I think it's wise not to pre-judge the reasons.

We don't need shutting down.

It is indeed sad that a life has been lost. It doesn't matter how the accident was caused, and no doubt the papers will be all over this given the recent involvement of professional footballer with the law. All that matters is that somebody lost their life, who should still be alive.

Yeah very sad news regarding the other driver. :(

Condolances to the family of the dead man. I am sure the police investigation will bring to light what happened and where the responsibility lays.

The Daily Mail are reporting it thus...

Footballer arrested over crash which killed father-of-five was 'changing songs on iPod' while driving on M1

A footballer has been arrested after being involved in a motorway crash on Christmas Day that killed a father-of-five.

Jordan Robertson, 20, who plays for Championship team Sheffield United, is understood to have been trying to change songs on his iPod while driving along the M1.

The striker's black Mercedes CLC 180 sports car is believed to have collided with the red Ford Galaxy of Omar Mohamed, 38, who was driving to pick up his children from London, where they had been staying during the school holidays.

After the collision on the southbound carriageway of the motorway at junction 19, at about 2.50pm on Christmas Day, Mr Mohamed, from Leicester, was airlifted to Walsgrave Hospital, in Coventry, where he died a day later.

The arrest comes just two months after Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper Luke McCormick was jailed for killing two young brothers Arron Peak, ten, and Ben, eight.

Although there has been no suggestion Robertson was under the influence of alcohol during the crash, it is understood he was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Mr Mohamed, a taxi driver, and former captain and then coach of the Somali national basketball team, had suffered a broken neck in the accident.

His wife Trea, 38, was at his bedside when he died on Boxing Day. Yesterday she paid tribute to her husband, who is father of their three sons, Mohamed, 12, Khalid, 11, and Djabir, nine, and two daughters, Nadhira, six, and Faiza, three.

She said: 'He was a very open person and always had a big smile. Basketball was his biggest love and he enjoyed playing whenever he could.

'He was a fantastic, loving father, and we will all miss him so much.

'He wasn't sure why he was in hospital, or what was going on around him, but he recognised me and he asked how the kids were.

'The damage to the spinal cord was so bad that it was hard for him to breathe, so he was drifting in and out of sleep all the time.

Mr Mohamed fled to Holland as a refugee from war-torn Somalia 14 years ago. His family moved to England in 2004.

Although the Somali basketball team did not compete at the Olympic Games in Beijing this summer, Mr Mohamed was asked to attend the opening ceremony and was part of the group of athletes who paraded the national flag around the Olympic stadium.

Last night 20-year-old Robertson was at home with his parents in Sheffield.

He said: 'My condolences go out to the family, I don't wish to make any further comment.'

The young footballer had been on loan from Sheffield United to Southampton Football Club before the accident.

Sheffield-born Roberston is reported to have hoped to extend the arrangement or make a permanent move when his loan expired.

But last night a spokesman for Southampton Football Club said Robertson would not be returning to the club.

He said: 'The loan agreement expired after the last match he played for us on December 13 when he came on as a sub against Burnley. He was on a swap deal with one of our players, but that ended after the Burnley game.'

A spokesman for Leicestershire police said: 'A 20-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident on suspicion of dangerous driving.

'He has been released on police bail pending further inquiries and is due to return to a police station in the new year.'

No-one was available for comment from Sheffield United last night.

The crash comes two months after Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper Luke McCormick was jailed for killing two young brothers Arron Peak, ten, and Ben, eight.

The drunken goalkeeper had been driving back from Ipswich midfielder Norris's wedding in June when he smashed into a car driven by the boys' father.

McCormick, 25, was twice the drink-drive limit and had only two hours' sleep before the crash in June. He had drunk champagne and wine at Norris's wedding in Bolton, and was rushing to Coventry to confront his fiancee after hearing rumours she had been cheating on him.

McCormick, who admitted causing death by dangerous driving and drink driving, was given seven years and four months in jail but will be out in half that time. His contract with Plymouth was ended.

Condolences to the wife now without a husband and the children who have lost their father.

Bit harsh? A BIT HARSH? A man is dead. That's harsh.

fuck off, it was an accident, maybe he was changing his ipod, maybe apple shouldnt make devices especialy for pluging your ipod into a car, maybe the other bloke was the one that was driving wrongly? you dont know, you never took your eyes off the road to change a cd? you dont know what happened, but to put a 20 year old kid all over the national news as causing death by dangerous driving is harsh

dont forget its standard for this when there is a death involved, he hasnt even been charged with anything

Would it be harsh plastering a 20yr old kid across the news if he wasn't a footballer? Someone has been killed, on Christmas Day, in what is more than likely a high-speed crash (after all it was on the motorway) - by a professional footballer. Harsh or not, it's going to be on the national news?

Are we interested that Madonna & Guy Ritchie are getting divorced? Not really, but they're famous, and it makes news.

Journalism isn't fair. You have to remember he has been bailed - so he hasn't been freed. He was arrested under suspicion (sp.?) of causing death by dangerous driving. I'm sure we've all changed CDs, or even handled our mobile phones whilst driving - but if we'd have caused an accident whilst doing so we'd be pulled in front of the judge too. Just because he's a young 20-yr old lad doesn't mean he doesn't have to face the consequences.

We know he's not been found guilty, and nobody says he has... but unfortunately, to be arrested, he must have been involved somehow - even innocently. They won't have just flagged him down and arrested him will they? I'm sure the police investigators will have done their work to piece together what happened.

I do feel for Jordan Robertson, at any point in my life I don't think I could mentally cope with knowing that I *may* have killed someone unintentionally, but at a mere 20yrs old with a professional career ahead of me - I can't even imagine it.

Don't come across so defensive, username, none of us are blaming Jordan for what has happened, and nobody is pointing the finger, but you have to realise that stories like these make the headlines.

fuck off, it was an accident,

I'm sure the authorities would love to hear your version of events seeing as you were obviously there to be so certain.

Infraction for the abuse by the way... no way to kick the new year off and you can't say you haven't been warned. It isn't the way we do things around here.

If indeed the facts of the case are being reported are true, then it is a tragic accident that someone has been killed, but there is still a reason for that tragic accident and it was because someone was not paying attention while in charge of a potentially lethal machine. Just because you didn't mean to kill someone doesn't mean you aren't guilty of an offence. That's strict liability for you.

The Road Traffic Act 1991 guidelines are pretty clear. These are paraphrased from the Act:

The Road Traffic Act 1991 states that ‘a person who causes the death of another person by driving a mechanically propelled vehicle dangerously on a road or other public place is guilty of an offence’.

A person is regarded as ‘driving dangerously’ if:
· The way they are driving falls far below what would be expected of a competent and careful driver, and
· It would be obvious to a competent and careful driver that driving in that way would be dangerous

There are a number of guidelines under the act which means you get a wide range of sentences handed out.

The one that sticks out though, is this:

Highly culpable standard of driving at time of offence

(a) The consumption of drugs or alcohol
(b) Greatly excessive speed; racing; competitive driving against another vehicle; ‘showing off’
(c) Disregard of warnings from fellow passengers
(d) A prolonged, persistent and deliberate course of very bad driving
(e) Aggressive driving
(f) Driving while the driver’s attention is avoidably distracted, e.g. by reading or by use of a mobile phone
(g) Driving when knowingly suffering from a medical condition which significantly impairs the offender’s driving skills
(h) Driving when knowingly deprived of adequate sleep or rest
(i) Driving a poorly maintained or dangerously loaded vehicle, especially where this has been motivated by commercial concerns

These are the factors in which a road death is considered most seriously.

You have to hope for the young lad's sake that the reported story is not true.

"The Road Traffic Act 1991 states that ‘a person who causes the death of another person by driving a mechanically propelled vehicle dangerously on a road or other public place is guilty of an offence’."

Does that mean if you cause a death on private land you cannot be held for the offence?

I used to go to school with Jordan, and it sounds like he's a complete mess.

It's a very sad incident, and shows why you always need to keep your eye on the road, and not use iPods, phones and smoke while at the wheel.

From what I've been told, the man who died wasn't wearing his seatbelt.
