Taking my 7 year old boy down to Bramall Lane for the first time tonight, for the Blades v Stoke friendly.

Always said that I didn't want to get him into football, and especially the Blades, as they have generally caused me more misery and pain, than happiness over the years.

However, it's too late for me, United are in my blood and I'm stuck with them until the day I pop my mortal coil. My little boy though, I just hope that I'm doing the right thing by him, and not consigning him to the same footballing frustrations that I've had to endure over the past 40-odd years.

Hopefully the tide has turned and the Blades are at last on an upwards trajectory with Sir Chris Wilder?

Up The Mighty Blades!

Fingers crossed that he can get us to the promised land in the next few years, and then keep us there. I predict that he will.

I reckon about 15000 at the Lane tonight, and I can't wait to see the young Brooks strut his stuff.

its a type of torture we have all come to know and love, and better than supporting that shower of shit across town in S6.

You are doing the right thing, mine were all born in Watford, but I will do my best to steer them toward the blades as there is no feeling like it stood on the Kop and watching the red and white wizards, hairs on the back of my neck just thinking about the wonderment that it is, he will love it :)

My lads first game will be Barnsley in a few weeks, I wondered about waiting another year but I figure if he hates it at least it won't be freezing cold and he'll just play ninja turtles on my phone if he's bored. He's 5.

It will be another year before he can go as he'll be too cold at Christmas to drag along so I've taken a leap of faith. Looking forward to having 3 generations at the game.

You say that, but I've been taking my son for a couple of years now. He had a season ticket last year so went to most home games and a scattering of games the season before. He hasnt seen us lose a single game. Not one. He got the lip on in the one single game he saw us draw. Furthermore, he goes to school with Jake 'unbeaten' Wrights son. He's conviced he supports an invicible football team.

I fear his first full season wasnt the best prep for a life of bladeyness.
Don't most of us start during the times when we're relatively successful? Either Harris, Porterfield, Bassett or Warnock? Even at age 25 I wasn't anticipating us spending so long in the lower divisions. I recently realised that since I left Sheffield twenty years ago I've only seen us in the PL for one season.

Its in our DNA, Scottish great-granddad went in the first season 1889 and its gone down the male line

As soon as my grandson is old enough, (he's three) he'll be joining us at The Lane

Still fondly remember my first game 1965 v Arsenal

My favourite story is my granddad at the Leeds game 1936 v Leeds and 68000 in attendance. He told me he paid a 1/- (shilling) to get in and would have paid 2/- to get back out again - due to the crush

Good lineage. I've wondered if anyone can trace their family supporting the Blades back to our start.

My grandad also went to the Leeds game.

I reckon Stoke will bring at least 2000, and if we took nearly 4000 to Rotherham last week for a midweek match, I don't think the attendance will be too far off 15000.

It's the only home friendly we'll have since being promoted, so I think there will be a lot of interest, especially with young Brooks making the headlines. We'll see, but I for one am certainly looking forward to tonight.

I think we'll be lucky to reach 10k. Pre-season friendlies just don't have the buzz. Not home games anyway.

I'm not going. I'm a season ticket holder but i just can't get excited by pre-season at all. 5th August is what i'm looking forward to. Last time I walked out of Bramall Lane we had just lifted a trophy infront of 30k, next time I walk in, i want to gain that same buzz - big crowd, excitement of a new season etc..

You're doing the right thing though taking him tonight. You'll be able to move seats if he can't see or gets bored etc.

Not about the success or otherwise on the field.
It's the bond that you and the lad have and the shared experience.

Ken Junior is 24 now and we have been going to the Lane and away games together since he was about 8 or 9
We've seen many ups and downs together but whatever the fortunes of the team at the time we have enjoyed the match day experience, regardless.
Since he left for Univ and subsequently began living in dirty L**ds its even more precious each time to share the Blades match day experience together.
That all started with me driving a 200 mile round trip on a school night with his little face in awe as he entered Bramall Lane for the first time.
It's a kind of magic that is not dependent on the football. It transcends that.

If your bond is like the one I have with my lad then you are definitely doing the right thing.

I remember explaining to both my boys before taking them to their first game, when they were 9 and 6 respectively. I told them that, this is my local team, we rarely win anything, but it's a great club and they play some very good football at times but sometimes they are rubbish. I explained that if they decide to support Sheffield United they'll have a lot of ups and downs, but the main thing is to support them no matter what, enjoy the good times when they come and don't get too downhearted when things aren't going well.

That's the way I've always looked at it anyhow and it works for me/us.

I'm passionate about the Blades, but not to the point where it ruins my day if things don't go well.

There are other things in life more important than that.

Started both mine at 5!

Don't regret it one bit. If I'm going to suffer so are they.

Mine will be more of a "my in-laws are pigs, if you ever want an inheritance in the future don't ever go to a match with them swine". Not sure he'll understand yet but I can bribe him with toys until he catches the bug!
