I was just thinking, isn't it a bit surprising that in these days where most clubs are desperate to find a goal scoring striker, no one has approached us for Billy Sharp?

After all, his goal record speaks for itself. There aren't many strikers in the country with a better one!

How would feel if an ambitious Championship club put good money - i.e. in the order of a few million pounds - to take Billy off our hands? Would you take the money and let him go? Or not?

Id say most clubs are aware of Billys affinity with the club
Its more a family than an employer

chances of him being tempted away are as high as Exeter winning the FA cup

I doubt any league one clubs could afford him, and he's recent record in the Championship wouldn't make him stand out as a guaranteed return at this level.
I hope he proves that to be nonsense but currently his last few seasons at this level haven't been hugely impressive.

May be clubs have inquired - we probably won't know until the truth comes out in his biography in another 5 years

Naive to suggest there won't have been interest in Sharp this season or last. Or some of our other better performers as well. Wilder has made much of the importance of the extensions of key players of late.

There will have been interest. How firm remains the unknown,

Agreed, also the fact that he's now 31 and isn't going to improve.

If he scores 10+ before January then there might be clubs interested.

For once I don't think the club would sell if an offer came in. Realistically nobody in league one can afford him and I doubt any club in the championship would offer money that even Sheffield United would deem acceptable for 31 year old Sharp. It's an ideal situation for us. He'll be an important player this season yet no one who can afford to is likely to want to take him.

I would like to think that WE are actually now an ambitious championship club

Am I surprised no one has seemingly approached us? On one hand yes, he scored 30 goals last season and would be worth a punt. On the other hand no, he keeps coming back to Bramall Lane and other clubs will know his deep affinity with the club. Any approaches or enquiries that may come up (we don't know for sure there haven't been) will probably have been dismissed at the first conversation. They would probably be from clubs of a similar stature and due to him having turned 30 they would likely want him for a modest fee. Unlikely he would want to leave either.

Everyone in the FL knows that Billy is a natural goal scorer and contrary to what some believe he HAS scored goals in the Championship. His best spell at that level was with Doncaster as we all know.

I think the reason he hasn't scored as many at other Championship clubs is that they weren't going well at the time (Blades, Forest, Leeds etc). Remember he only had a very short spell with Southampton there.

I don't expect him to score 30 this coming season but I have no doubts at all that he's good for 15+ which would be respectable for any striker in the Championship.

As with Ched, going back over 5 years to find proof that they are going to deliver goals at this level is at best optimism, and at worst delusion.
They both have it all to prove for us this season in the Championship, but its not assured as the backing evidence just isn't there.

Then I remain optimistic ;)

Doesn't really matter. They're the best we've got and we can't afford any better. I think they will get enough goals between them to get us into a respectable position.

Certainly in Billy's case, a finisher will score goals provided he's given enough service. The goal is the same size in the Championship and the goalies are only a bit better. He will score goals.

But neither have been lethal finishes, they've both tended to score as many as they've missed.
At the Championship level, certainly now, you don't get plenty of chances, so they need to step up their shots to goals converstion rate of theyre to do what you believe of them.

Are there stats to back this up? Is Sharp appreciably worse at converting chances than other forwards? Does anyone have stats?

People say this, and yet Sharp was the top scorer in all 4 divisions last season and is the top scorer in all 4 divisions over the last 2 seasons combined. How can this be the case if his conversion ratio is so bad?

Billy will score goals. I think Ched might (he has more to prove). Wilder thinks so as well and he seems to know his onions when it comes to football. I'm happy to trust his judgement.

As I say, they're the best we've got so we have to put our faith in them. Spreading doubt won't help.
