No chance I'd say on Bradford.

I think if there were no solid nibbles, I'd have liked him in and around the first team friendlies. Has he even been involved in any as yet?

A really sad little fall from grace :(

Surprised we haven't had any interest on brayford...

He's our most proven championship performer and did well for burton last year by all accounts.

He's obviously not in wilders plans (which is fine) but I'd be tempted to keep hold of him. Not a bad option for a back 3 position.

We need to offload both Brayford and Done, not bothered about receiving a fee as long as the buying club picks up the balance of the contract. Thus the reason for so many undisclosed fees

Think we can all agree that whatever the reasons and not looking to blame anyone, injuries included, JB has been a hideous waste of money.

£1.5million+ for a right back in the third division when we had fuck all up front.

The absolute totem of spunking moneh.

I wonder why he's not a 'Wilder player', though? A hunch would be that he's not quite up to the intensity of how we train, but that's complete guesswork. Can't imagine it being attitude.

He's certainly worth around £700k at the very least. I wonder if Southend are in the market for a right-sided defender? :D

It's odd isn't it? My feeling is that Wilder was simply disgusted by the amount we spent on a right back for what was effectively a failing side that needed improvements throughout. Not really Bray's fault though.

The guy took a big pay cut to play for us (or Clough, if you wish to see it that way) and he seemed to genuinely love the club. Spending such ridiculous amounts was nobody's fault but our own. I don't see that as a reason to not play him, because we know he's a quality player and he'd give us another option at right-CB...perhaps even first choice.

One other possibility I hadn't considered is simply that his wages don't fall in line with the new wage structure we've brought in. That'd make sense because it'd mean it was nothing personal, but Wilder can't have someone earning X whilst others are earning Y and he's not going to renegotiate his own contract to reduce his pay down to something more in line with the rest of the squad.

nail on head although Sharps wage is way above anyone else in the squad. But when you are club captain and score 30 odd goals I suppose he may have special dispensation.

Wages the issue, Brayford big increase when we got promoted.

Contract expires next summer, think he will go on a seasons loan with us footing a good portion of it.

Back to Burton or elsewhere? I'd have thought that barring a few clubs (Charlton, Wigan or Scunny) no L1 side would be able to afford his salary even if heavily subsidised. Which leaves Champ clubs - Burton (obviously), Forest, Pigs, Hull, Barnsley?

Bedlam as forum member states opinion is "guesswork" rather than FACT!

Well done Tom. Can't see it catching on looking at the KMc/Brooks thread though, where the quoted values get larger with every page.

Only heard of Burton interest, he wants that move as much as they want him.

Can't imagine many clubs will be queuing up for a player approaching 30 on £15k+/week with a dodgy knee whose value will only decrease. Suspect it may be a case of having to bite the bullet, get what they can out of Burton and wish him well.

All most of us ever do is guess. Anybody who's ever read The Secret Footballer will know that whilst we fans love to discuss our clubs and have a gossip about what we think is happening, the majority of us actually know very little about how professional football really works and what actually goes on behind the scenes.

I'll happily put my hands up and say I know very little. How would I? I'm not on the training pitch or in the dressing room. I don't negotiate transfer deals. I've never played the game at any decent level. All I do is follow the club as closely as I can, watch the games, form my own opinions and listen to the contributions of people who might know a little more than I do.

Yes. So, we don't pay him off. Because it's actually money well spent if it fucks up one of our rivals.

How would getting John Brayford for nowt 'fuck up' Burton?

We'll have to pay something I guess because he's contracted to us...see Treeton Blade post above...

Yep, sorry - when I said get what we can for him, I meant as a proportion of his salary (i.e. >50% if we're lucky). The prospect of recouping any of the monies spent on his recruitment is unfortunately unrealistic.

It's such a shame...he could make a big difference for us this season. Hey ho.

I did wonder if we could get a swap deal out of it, but I suppose that is out of the question...

Brayford and Wilder for Nige? Sounds a fair deal. Remember you always start the game with a point so anything more is a bonus.

I think you're assuming I'm disagreeing with you when I'm agreeing and adding to it.

We don't pay him off - we keep him. Simple as that. If no one makes an offer for him, we give him the option of tearing up his contract and walking away or he stays until his contract expires. If he stays, it costs us money but causes problems for Burton. If he tears his contract up, we get rid of him for nothing.

So we keep him on, at reportedly £15k a week just to spite Burton?

In the meantime they nip out and buy another a far, far cheaper RB who perhaps isn't injured a lot and which they need to do anyhow...I see... with friends like you advising McCabe it's little wonder the club has floundered until Wilder came along...

it would be best for all concerned if we could come to some arrangement with Burton.

Yes it would but we don't just want to roll over do we?

I'm waiting for the conspiracy of Clough and Brayford in it together, Clough refusing to pay, so we pay off Brayford, and 48hrs later he signs for Burton.

Shame about brayford really.
Top bloke for making his time here memorable.
Thatcup run was immense.

I'm ready for another.

I think that's what ESA was suggesting. So, we tell Brayford we're not going to pay him off. That he leaves for nothing or he stays. Because if we pay him off, he'll be expecting half his outstanding wages, at least. If we keep him, he'll be keen to go by the JTW (assuming he can't get back into the first team) and may end up accepting a nominal payout. Remember he was so desperate to leave Cardiff he took a pay cut and dropped down a division so he has form.
So, either way we'll probably end up paying half his outstanding wages but if we keep him Clough doesn't get to shaft us. And I suspect that if he knows we're serious, he'll go for nothing on deadline day.

We either give him away on a free and no pay off or loan him with Burton paying a big percentage or all of his wages. Pointless subsidising them so they can play him,we may as well keep him as cover as you never know 're injuries and look at how Coutts and Freeman returned to the fold last year.

Intriguing Mexican standoff.

Who blinks first? Wilder or Clough?

Another way of looking at it, Clough has never managed a club and not got Brayford there somehow. Clearly a special bond between player and Manager exists.

Wilder will want rid of the wages and already has brought Baldock in. But it would be galling to United to let him go for free. Take away Beattie and he's probably our record signing especially when you factor in wages.

On the other hand, could Clough let him rot in United's reserves when he did such a good job for Clough last year. He managed to get United to pay 1.5m perhaps he will eventuslly twist their Chairman's arm.
