I wanted him to sign and I thought he would improve the team. However I'm not gutted either as I know Wilder will move onto another target and his record is quality so far in the transfer market. Also, as others have said, we have since seen Brooks become a real possibility for the first team next season.

As for Holmes personal situation, who knows if he ever would have come if we'd agreed a fee. When he says it was a no brainer, I suspect it wasn't as otherwise it would have been signed weeks ago when it was first offered - according to the press. Its taken him nearly 5 weeks or so to sign that and in the meantime it seems clear that Charlton were not willing to sell him for nearer our bid so my guess is that he realised a deal wasn't going to be agreed with the two clubs and it made every sense to sign an improved deal.

I don't think he's digging his heels in I think he's trying to work within a budget. If he starts saying I want 500k more for this lad and then another 500k for this other lad there isn't any point having a budget.

I also believe that if he really wanted him he would have upped his offer (using some of the other as yet accounted for cash) I think he has a value for Holmes and if Charlton don't see this as being right he'll move on.

All that said I also believe that if there was someone that Wilder REALLY wanted and it was the case that we were 1/2 hundred grand short in the budget... I think we'd find it (within reason).

Its a no brainer when he knows United aren't going to match their valuation and he has still another year to play there and wants to remain on good terms with the manager, players and fans alike. But there is no evidence that we ever matched what they wanted - if indeed we ever knew what that was. Holmes is a proper Southerner and has never played above Northampton so I don't think that helped us either but who knows! I don't blame Holmes I just wish he'd have signed the contract ages ago so we know where we stand. I just hope we've not lost out on others waiting for this saga to conclude!
