Reed has matured into a 'quarterback' type midfielder. Its a rather niche ability. I still feel he has the potential and ability to make it. He needs games though. Needs to go out on loan.

Never a good sign that, when your best position is one that doesn't exist in the game, I agree, that's what you call a niche! I know because I was a scrum-half, at Badminton.

The best thing we can do with Reed is buy him a Bullworker and feed him on raw meat. Oh yes...and send him to Chezzie but tell them it's David Brooks.

Yes. Perhaps somewhere like Chesterfield?
Ideally somewhere like Walsall; a L1 club that tries to play proper football. He's already had L1 experience and then dropped down to the u23s where, by all accounts, he's had a very good season. If he's to be any use to us he has to demonstrate he's a good L1 player. L2 would be a backwards step IMO, he's had a year to develop and consolidate, time to push himself again.

Daftest thing I've read today (and I read my own posts).

They are only worth those sums because they have proven themselves in the Prem. Suppose we'd not sold Walker in 2010 and he'd stayed here and not had his head turned. After 250 games in L1 and 6 POTS awards, are you saying there would be a queue of clubs offering us £40m for a L1 player?

I'd argue with Walker and Maguire in the back four we would never had seen the third division.

Totally agree.

He was thrust in very young and is still very young. He has been around the men's game and first team squad a good while now though.

As we're now a Championship side with aspirations of at least staying so, I think we may as well try and offload Reed permanently rather than loan him to League 2. Even if he does ok what does it do other than maybe put him in the shop window a bit more.

Considering his England appearances he's hardly unknown to scouts and people in the game.

Yes he did play well, and I'm not his biggest fan. But he can certainly pass a ball, which helps when you are a professional footballer I know! If you didn't know any different you would say he did better than Fleck so really you carnt take much away from that game.

I'd rather see him loaned out. He may yet be good enough.

Joined Chesterfield on season long loan

"The 19-year-old will spend the 2017/18 campaign at the Proact Stadium, working under Gary Caldwell, as he looks for regular first-team football. Midfielder Reed has flown out to Portugal to link up with his new team-mates at their training camp."

Last minute all-inclusive jobby? Thought they were skint!

Reed has had 3 seasons with England in amongst a strong batch of players. Obviously he couldnt maintain that without first team football. It was a big achievement for a L1 yougster. Quality player victim of circumstances at Bramall Lane. Player of the Season if he goes to Chesterfield.

If Reed is Chesterfield's 'player of the season' next year then they will be heading for The National League.

Very good move for Reed, he's a tidy player and the experience in L2 for Chesterfield. For my mind they have made some very good signings and pushed the boat out to make themselves one of the favourites for promotion, much in a way that we did last year, he's their 10th signing.

All seems a bit odd as a few months back they didn't have a pot to piss in.

Doubt that, he's a tidy player and i really hope he kicks on with it. He can pass a ball, does a great marking job and positionally he's got a good brain.

Problem is that he is very small, so needs to play alongside a bigger player in the middle and his shooting is (was) atrocious.

Not saying he's a bad player, but Chezzie will need better players than him to step up to the mark. If Reed is their best player then they won't have got much going on elsewhere.

We'll see. He's got a lot of potential.

Good move all round.

He's the right age for getting some regular football and hopefully that allows him to kick on. No one is the finished article at 17/18 but hopefully he will be getting game time in a side towards the top of the league.

Let's see how he does. Big season for him if he wants to break back into our first team.

That's the issue though.

2 years ago he was hot property down at the Academy with Di Gerolarmo.
Some Blades predicted they both had massive futures and both would be worth many millions in a few years.

There were rumours that other clubs were sniffing round and some predicted we'd sell off the Crown Jewels again
And let him go for £1 or £2 million.

We showed ambition by giving Reed and especially Che Adams a big pay rise.
Apparently Che Adams was going to be a future England international and we should demand £5 to £10 million for him.

My point is that the vast majority of promising youngsters don't amount to what their potential promises.
I wouldn't be too quick to write Adams off. He has the potential to play at Premiership level, it's what's between his ears that is the problem. Redknapp will probably be a good manager for him.

He had a great start to his career in League 1. There's some right cloggers who are highly rated in League 2.

He could quite easily impress the same way Whiteman did at that level.

Great signing for Chezzie.

Recall him tomorrow afternoon.

Disagree. Reed most probably needs good players around him to protect him and to do some of the work that he can't. If Reed wins player of the year it will be as a result of a team effort around him

Reed needs to make a step up and i think this is his platform to make a big move, he's been around the first team at United for many years, but has not kicked on. At Chesterfield he should get more opportunities. I think and hope he will take them.
