George Boyd doesn't quite have that ring to it...

But Boy George does - a real superstar name>

Your problem Pinchy is that you just don't think laterally. Too busy sticking pins in that Bassett doll I'd wager.

What a complete mug you must be. At 22yrs old he was playing in League 2.
Since leaving Peterborough he has always been above them in the footballing pyramid, he has just spent 3 of his previous 4 seasons as a premier league player - playing 29, 36 & 36 games. If he was so shit, i'm sure that he wouldn't have been capable of playing 88% of the possible games at his respective club.

All I can see from you in this thread is:

a) You're jealous that Weds have signed a great player that we can only dream of signing
b) You really do have red tinted specs on

Would you have been disappointed if we had signed him? Tell me which of our players (in his position) are better than him?

Matty matty matty.

You really are getting your knickers in a twist laddo.

Read back through the quotes and then come back and reassess your response.

Thanks.

Let's just re-assess this.

Who on here would be happy to sign George Boyd and Alan Hutton. I'll even be extremely conservative and say for a combined 40k a week?

Anyone?

I don't get it. Boyd is a great player. Very highly rated at Peterborough and has been consistent at Championship level and played a big chunk of Premier League games too.

If say Forest or Derby had signed him, I imagine people would be saying it's a good signing.
Yeah but he's shit.

I thought that was us?....

You'd certainly think so in the prevailing madness.
I guess you only read a few of the posts then. I recall reading many praising our players and staff and quite a few praising our owners.

I've also read a few hysterical posts but they are very much the minority.

I'll ask again, would you sign him on (and I guarantee it will be) around 40k a week?!
No, I'm not a manager. If I was, it would depend on my budget. If I could afford him, yes, probably but that would depend on the due diligence I did into his character and personality. If he was a solid, hardworking pro, then yes.

Spending a shit load of money didn't do Newcastle any harm and spunking £25m a season for six seasons got Brighton promoted.

It's a myth that well paid players lack motivation, some do, some don't, it's the manager's job to find the ones that don't. Our plan to spend our way out of L1 wasn't a bad plan per se, it was just badly executed. Wolves spent much more than us but they spent it on the right players. We didn't.

Boyd is a good signing - have grudging respect for how he plays - bit off the wall but he's a what you see, is what you get type of player - 40K per week though?

Think a few are missing the point with what our S6 neighbours are trying to do........moving to a 3 at the back scenario.

If true, they are still going to have a hugely, bloated squad with some very unhappy none playing players earning pots full of money and continuing to get closer to FFP limits.

Hang fire Blades - if our S6 neighbours do not go up this coming season, the proverbial will start hitting the fan.

Ah right.. Stewart Downing ..

At 22yrs old he was playing in the Premier League and had 16 England Caps. Since then he has gained a further 19 caps (35 in total).

Over the past 14 seasons, he has been a Premier League player in 13 of those. The other, he played 45/46 Championship games.

Since the 03/04 season, he has chalked 396 Premier League games from a possible 494 (38 games in a season x 13 seasons) - ~80%

He may be in decline, he's 32. But a premier league player and ex-England international in decline is still a player that is better than our current players.

The Downing thread was in-keeping with the other ridiculous Player Suggestions that we get in the rumour mill. When it was first introduced, I stated it was a silly idea and still believe that to be true as you get people listing random players because they're good on Football Manager etc.

Many fans on this forum seem to bring in wages, signing on fees and agent fees etc. into discussions about players, this isn't really something we can judge them on. We can judge players on their ability and I know we would never realistically be able to afford Boyd or Downing, we're not at the stage to compete with these wages here, however, both Boyd and Downing would improve our squad at present.

Many fans seem to have put us on a pedestal now where these players apparently aren't good enough for a team coming up from the 3rd tier, yet high end 2nd tier teams and low-end premier teams are looking at them.. This is what I don't get.

He has been on the decline, he came into the Prem scene and looked like he was going to be a superstar. Had a couple of superb seasons for middlesboro, but like I alluded too. Since then he's been on the steady decline never reaching those standards again.

Regarding these kind of players, don't forget, we have a shocking record when it comes to getting players on big wages for the level we're at. Not many have turned out the performances expected of them.

I'm judging on VFM, Middlesboro fans were vitriolic towards him in their promotion season, stealing a wage, doing nothing...by all accounts it was an awful signing by their judgement.

If they didn't enjoy his appearances two years ago, I don't hold much hope for anyone enjoying them now. Particularly when paying a Premium.

It's weird. A lot of people seem that bitten by Hammond/Woolford they genuinely consider a relegated Hartlepool winger better than Stewart Downing.

Not to say he's gonna be a shit player, but one's proven quality and the other is a huge gamble.

Downing might just come and take the wages and toss it off, thats why he would be an ideal signing for our neighbours, better to gamble on a young lad, desperate to make a name for himself than a mercenary

Too many gambles is a recipe for disaster my friend. Just look at my Bet365 account. Every signing we've made so far is a gamble in that they're unproven at Championship level.

Still rather gamble with a young player than be paying a fortune to somebody who just tosses it off,i aint taken in by big names/big wages ,and happily it seems, nor is our Manager, hence his spunking money/medals comments

There's plenty of players sloshing around in the premiership who'd drop to the championship for £40k a week and there's plenty of clubs who'd love to offload them and mug them off to someone with more money than sense. We're past exponents at this and I would like to think we've learned our lesson. I think some of the supposed friction between McCabe and Wilder may be that the former has learned his lesson and the latter has yet to learn. A big no from me for Downing types.

Alan Hutton ... oh this makes me smile if ever CW's elequent quote of 'spunking yer money up the wall ' fitted a situation this is it !! I can't work out whether the pigs incompetence is the work of a comedy genius , an expert whose football knowledge extends to championship manager on a play station or a total fuck wit inventor of the inflatable dart board or all 3 ?

Keep up the good work ,maybe Robert. Maxwell didn't fall off the yacht ?

Downing has always been way over-rated in my opinion.

Maybe this is one of those Mandela effect things that LS26BLADE was on about yesterday. Clearly the Middlesbrough manager thought differently as he played in 45 of their 46 games in a promotion season. I remember many blades fans wanting Stephen Quinn sold .

Football fans are weird folk. Many think they know better than the manager.

FWIW - selling Quinn was a dark day in our recent history.

31 on a 3 year contract at £30,000 a week? Fuck me senseless :):):):):)
I'm not sure it matters what they are being paid it matters how they perform. As someone said earlier Boyd is likely to perform better in the championship than Thomas....the Pigs can afford this type of player we cant.....end of.....let's hope the tuna man does one when they fail again this season and leaves them in the lurch !

Perfect response. Thread closed.

I'm quite happy we can't afford this type of player.

If it was a player on the up - a Jota, an Ince, a Mooy, i'd happily pay those kind of wages if the money was available.

We were bitten by the likes of Lee Hendrie, who by all accounts was an ex england international who should have performed too.

Correct. They're all much better players. However, all 3 listed would cost > £10m and that's before wages.

Hendrie was a ridiculous signing. You only had to have read the papers to know he had a personality disorder, never mind carry out any kind of due diligence. Was that a Robinson signing? I wouldn't trust that fucker to put the bins out.

Who, Hendrie or Robson lol

They are going to pay for this once Tuna man realises ASDA havent't got 2 tins for a quid anymore.

He's been a good player - but it shouldn't be what he has been that's in question, it's what he will be. By the time the season is in full flow he'll be a mobile forward player, a couple of months off of 32. On a 3 year contract, on no doubt enormous wages.

None of us can be sure that these expensive gambles won't pay off for them - but many of us are quite happy that we aren't making them (anymore), coupled with the £50 ticket prices that follow.
