There has been much debate, both on here and Rumour Mill, about the players or types of players fans would like to see us get in for the new season ahead. Very little of that conversation has centred around the position which gives me the most cause for concern, which is that of goalkeeper.

Let's be realistic - Simon Moore had a pretty easy time of things last year. Ok, he made a few important saves in some games, particularly early in the season, but none you wouldn't expect a reasonably competent goalkeeper to make and in many games he was rarely called upon, due to our superiority over the opposition.

It's fairly obvious that that's going to change next season and he's going to be put under much more pressure and I'm by no means sure that he will be able to handle it.

I say this because, in my view, there are obvious flaws in his game including a weakness at the near post, a failure to command the 6 yard box and being too easily beaten from long range.

I hope I'm wrong, but my fear is that these will be exposed at the level we are moving to and, as things stand, we have no reliable alternative to turn to, especially after the infuriating give away of yet another of our great young prospects.

Am hoping that others can calm my fevered brow on this topic.

Simon Moore was tested plenty of times last season, and more often than not was equal to the occasion.
Until Jake Wright returned, the defence was weak, and Moore saved us more than once when a goal against could've changed the game. I fact he's the only goalkeeper I've had confidence in since Simon Tracey.
What needs to happen now is to bring in another goalkeeper who can challenge him for the position, thus keeping him on top of his game.
Oh, and fuck Long off, which goes without saying.

Whilst Moore is clearly a step up in quality from the most recent keepers we've had the dubious pleasure of having between our sticks, he still has a few too many 'he should probably have saved that' moments for my liking. I like the lad but he still seems to be a work in progress.

He needs decent competition with another keeper being brought in. Sorry, i just don't rate George as being good enough to be understudy. Bring in another and let him and Moore battle it out for the first team jersey.

To say he had an easy time is well wide of the mark ,we were an attacking team and thus gave a lot of chances to the opposition ,Moore was busy most games and his work was unrecognised a lot of the time due to what happened at the other end. His management of the defenders in front of him should not be under estimated either, he is a great communicator.

I'm bored of close season too.

Tracey, Rees, Kelly, kenny. This was an era of great talent that has not been matched since. Anybody would have a reyt job to fill those gloves. A well organised defence will cover Moore until we need a new keeper.Lets at least give Moore a chance to prove his capabilities!

You've called that one wrong IMHO.

A Blade who came through the academy and played in some poor teams with (post Harry), some very poor defenders in front of him. He has made quite a few mistakes but at 20/21 that's part of the learning curve.

While he is here he deserves our support. Giving him stick and telling him he's wanted could well come and bite us on the arse if he has to deputise for Moore.

Moore was one of our best/better players last season and is one of the players who was of a 'Championship standard'. Those who are doubting him and worrying about the GK position really need to find something better to do. Maybe read a book or do some gardening? Maybe take a walk in the Peak District which is on our doorstep.

I bet a pound to a piece of shit Tufty isn't wasting intellectual horsepower on the GK'ing position!

His save late on at Rochdale to preserve a point was one of the best I've ever seen live but there were a few that seemed to go 'through him' at times - Chezzy away rings a bell? Overall, I reckon he'll be fine but a proper No.2 to challenge him can do no harm

Time for Long to move on now IMO.

My view on Moore is that he's OK, but could do with improving to become a convincing Championship level number 1.

His shot stopping isn't always the best and his distribution is quite poor, but his communication counts for a lot and that relationship he's established with the defence is a big reason to want him to keep the jersey next season. He's also consistent with his decision making which is significant.

If we want to really give him good competition then we could try to sign Connor Ripley. Boro seem intent on signing an expensive first choice GK, Keiren Westwood and Sam Johnstone have been linked, and Konstantopoulos is still there, so is Guzan for the time being. Maybe they'd be open to selling him. It would take decent money though and I doubt we'd spend it on a GK, even if he would be a great investment long term.

If we're going for it, he's not good enough. But seeing as our budget is bottom 5, we're stuck with him. More important positions need improvement first.

My view -

Decent keeper, best since kenny. And by no means a weak link and his best years are ahead of him. Will only improve as last season was his first for a while as first choice

But Could do with competition - as has been beaten from range a few time / near post. Suspect this could be concentration related as we dominated so many games last year - then the ping a shot against the run of play.

Adam smith being brought in to challenge him wouldn't be a bad move on our part. Is really a shame ramsdale went as that would have been ideal.

Barney

Quite a few players who were dross under your favourite manager Adkins, have improved immeasurably under CW.

Can't Long be given a chance to see if he can do a 'Freeman' or a 'Coutts'?
That would be too risky for me, especially in the Championship.

He has often been an absolute liability between the sticks.

We can't afford to be spending a season in a hard division hoping he'll develop the requisite character to be competent goalkeeper at that level.
Yes it's a shame given his early potential but he lacks the commanding presence that Moore offers. You have to be vocal, you have to marshall the defence accordingly. He does none of those things.

He might benefit from a move to a club where his mistakes won't be scrutinised and he has room to develop, but in the cold light of day, we aren't in a position to be charitable.

He's the best GK we've had for years. Certainly the best one in our L1 stay. Probably the best since Kenny.

He's so vocal too, captains from the back
yes, he constantly barks like a clubbed seal pup all the way through the game. I've noticed that about him.

Wimbledon want George on loan so I'm assuming we're still very much in the market for a new keeper?

Time for Long to move on now IMO.
I've heard that Wimbledon are interested in George long?. That would be a good move for him, tufty could then bring someone in else as cover for Moore. Don't know who though?. Utb

I hope a keeper is in the shopping list, don't think championship is beyond Long, but think accepting him in the team is beyond too many of our fans.
Moore might prove to be capable, however from last season I have a niggle that he's a 3rd division Joe Hart. And that's not a compliment!

I personally think this is by far the most important position we should be recruiting for!
It's ok scoring 2 or 3 a game, but having 3 or 4 put past you isn't going to help us stay up, god help us if Moore gets injured!!!!
