Appear, yes but that's a media and messageboard illusion. There will be things happening in the background. Managers juggle a dozen different balls at once. Tufty can probably do twenty.

Sorry. I was there.

Yes so was I as I was for nearly every game this season

Only the fact that Holmes is now in talks with Robinson/Charlton regards a new improved contract

Well, they've offered him an improved deal. That doesn't mean they're "in talks". Charlton and especially their local rag have been putting an absurdly positive spin on this from the outset. I think the player wants the move. Why wouldn't he? We're Sheffield United.

See Rick's personal transfer thread in Rumour Mill

Holmes and Leonard are all but done. Leonard having a medical before the end of the week, Holmes will take a bit longer - maybe end of next week, but will certainly be on the plane to Spain.

Contrary to recent rumours, we won't sign Graham Carey, although he is a player Wilder really likes.

There you go. Remember who told you.

Glad Wilder saw the same game as most of us

Why? The former is entirely irrelevant to the latter! Tufty knows how to multi-task.

It would be relevant if we gave Charlton and Southend whatever they asked for and then couldn't fund further transfers (like the impatient Alex Revell fans are suggesting).

Indeed. Pretty much as I said at #504 and not a word about Holmes going missing.

Not your best effort. Have you saved all the interviews (there are many) where he speaks enthusiastically of proper football and playing the right way?

We're on the same page, Tufty and I.

Wasn't exactly hard to find. So the fact that they battered us and Holmes was part of that after 20 mins we were still on top you're trying to tell me Holmes continued to have a good game. The only other thing of note was his shinner into BLUT in the 2nd half.

Not sure why you're bringing playing the right way into it as that's not what's under discussion.

So just to finish, you're saying that Holmes continued to run us ragged even the whole second half?

He didn't though. It's a complete myth. He was their main threat throughout. We simply began to assert our clear superiority as a team.

It's very difficult for an opposition attacker to shine in those circumstances, but the lad didn't 'go missing'. For that, see (or rather don't see) Bladey favourites Cotterill and Halford from 2-59 p.m. at Wembley. Now that's going missing. Think they went looking for Howard.

Being the main threat in a team that ran out of steam after 20 minutes isn't exactly anything to shout about though is it? I thought you of all people would've expected better from a football team.

No, that's what you're saying I'm saying. I'm saying what I said at #504. We asserted our superiority as a team. Holmes remained their best player in an increasingly losing cause. The phrase "continued to run us ragged" is entirely yours, not mine. Tufty, in the clip you rely upon, says no different to what I have said.

Playing the right way is permanently under discussion. It's vital to success and pleasure. I know you don't like the fact that the manager emphasises it as much as I do. It raises a clear and present danger that I'm right and that would never do in S2.

I think Tufty might be a football subversive and we should run him out of town in the name of Nowt Fancy. Don't you?

I didn't say it was. Merely that he didn't 'go missing'. That suggests a voluntary disengagement and fails to reflect what actually happened; namely United asserting our superiority by playing the right way. Once we were dominant, Holmes could hardly "run the game" could he? He remained their most effective player, though. No more; No less. Tufty says absolutely nothing different in the extract that is supposed to defeat my argument.

Tufty might but we can't.

How do you expect us to run multiple long threads berating McCabe for the lack of ambition, all at the same time?

Just having a pop on the Lenny and Homes ones at the same time is hard enough, but if we go in for a CH we might miss some obvious digs at KM.

:)

We can debate how good Holmes is until we are blue in the face, the guy who knows his capabilities and attributes more than all of us is the man who wants to sign him.

Everyone agrees with Wilder, and his style. Thankfully, he eventually won you around too. :)

Event your straw men have disappeared. Everyone's on board!

Only amongst the impatient. Tufty is pretty confident...

perhaps not so confident now re Holmes and Leonard

from AK:

Says no movement on Leonard/Holmes - things not progressed - with clubs - Wilder said Friday is cut off point so you think we may be moving onto others now
Reed to Chesterfield- nothing in it
Jagielka - Says they would love him but suggested no chance
Brooks - See him part of the 1st team squad and feels he has a real chance

Says United wants 3 or 4 more signings with one in a forward thinking area

2 x CB or 1 x CB plus 1 x GK.
1 x ACM
1 x RW ?????????

I'd imagine you'd be looking at:

2 X CBs
1 X CM
1 X Versatile AM (Who may be capable of playing centrally or on the right)

I'm basing this on Wilder's comments, media speculation and common sense. I do agree that in an ideal world we would bring a keeper in too, maybe if we sell Long.

He'll be talking as of right now, assuming Long is staying, so it'll probably mean 4 + another GK at least.

We have every intention of signing 2 CBs, Leonard and Holmes. Holmes won't be the 'forward thinking area' player he's talking about, so that would take it to 5 + possibly a keeper. Which would be about right.

But I think we'll leave it a while to sign another attacker.

EEL might take a while too if Wolves are kidding themselves about the fee.

We appear to be pretty much on the same page there.

Yes, the only reason I commented was that I thought you may have overlooked the CM (Someone in the Leonard mould if not the man himself.)

Fair comment. I used the ACM based on the Knill "forward thinking role comment",but Leonard works as a CM.

I'm amazed that you've managed to come up with 5/6 from Knill's comment of 3/4.

I've shown my working out.

First of all, it's logical to assume 3/4 means 4 - Leonard, Holmes, and 2 CBs - we've admitted interest in EEL, and we wouldn't make him our sole CB signing. That would be stupid.

Then if Long leaves that's 5 because we'd replace him.

The 6th is questionable, but again logical. He already referenced Holmes and I think he'll be talking about a different attacking player. It's also widely agreed that we could do with more up front. Wilder will see that too. And his budget may yet receive a boost with the Walker sell on.

Lastly, I'm sure they've understated the number of signings we're after previously. We ended up with more players last summer than Wilder indicated he wanted, and not only as a result of our poor start.

Definitely.

I'm not sure about you, but I'm glad were going for someone in that position.

The one thing I think this team needs most after a CB is a central midfielder who's athletic, breaks things up and has a bit of bite (and yes, of course they have to be able to play football).
I'm not saying Fleck and Coutts aren't good, they're great. My worry is that they have been playing against less talented players, with plenty of possession and space. There will be plenty of games where we're up against it and we will need someone to steady the ship.

I don't think that's pessimistic by the way, there are some very talented players and good teams in the championship (I hope we'll become one of them.)

I'm not saying you haven't shown you're working out, I'm saying I don't particularly agree based on what Knill has said.

I will admit that it's rare I disagree with one of your posts though :)

You mean a Leonard or a Jackson Irvine?
I wouldn't worry about the names that are banded about on here too much. It seems we are after 5 of the same type of player if you do.
I haven't followed the Championship that much recently but if it's like what I remember we 100% need a coady type player to support and defend Fleck (as tough as the little fecker is).
