Well, if the club are going for Holmes, it would suggest the scouting and recruiting team at the club haven't identified any better alternatives. Of course, the club should try to recruit the best possible players they can afford and that will be willing to join the club, however, every signing is a gamble and recruitment is not a science (although the Brentford owner may disagree).

Personally, I'd like to see a couple of players signed with Champ experience - neither Holmes nor Carey have this.

If, however, there are no such options on the club's list that are currently available, someone who plays in the same attacking midfield role who I've always been impressed with and who is rumoured to be on the move this summer is Brad Potts at Blackpool. He's rumoured to be heading to Ipswich for around £500k.

You see...

you're another one.

Nothing personal mate, honestly. But why do you think that it's so important to have "Championship experience"? What the hell has that got to do with anything? We have 19 players in the current squad with "Championship experience" or higher.

I tell you what I've learned mate, I've learned that "wisdom comes with experience - but sometimes experience comes alone".

To translate...

Some folks really benefit from experience - it equips them to do better in life. Others learn fuck all from it. They are no further forward than if they never had that experience in the first place.

There are many, many players, who only ever dug it at lower levels, then got a glimpse of a higher level later on in their career. For some, they absolutely smashed it. OK, for others they didn't.

I think it's better to judge a player on current form and what they bring to a team. I have no doubt whatsoever that the eager running and sheer menace of that lad Holmes, even though he's 30 or whatever he is, would be a real asset to Sheffield United. I thought he was great when we played Charlton at home last season. Scored a belting free kick and was an absolute nightmare to contend with. Gave it his absolute all.

I'd like that kind of player in Wilder's squad, I really would. Never mind the big names. Never mind where they played in the past. Have they got the ability and the motivation to bust a gut for us?

In Holmes case he has.

Nyron Nosworthy
Jordan Stewart
Ashley Ward

All had bundles of Championship experience

(shudder)

Having thought about it, Holmes only tormented us for about 20 mins if that of an entire match, we need players who could torment us for longer than that, tormenting other teams who were previously higher than us whilst playing for us.

Basham stopped Holmes playing but couldn't stop Ched playing for love no money, if Ched had any decent players playing with him it would've been a different story in that first half against Chezzie. This is the barometer of player I'd sign, no one stopped Ched he went off injured where as Holmes just completely stopped and is getting no younger so I personally wouldn't be too fussed if we missed out.

I'd hazard an educated guess that both players were watched/scouted for more than 90 minutes, and decisions to sign/not sign were based on more than the above.

Just to add SEB, it was a small sample size above, I admit that but I have seen both players on a number of occasions and my point stands for those games aswell on the quality of player a club like ours on the up should be signing. Holmes is at an age where we shouldn't be gambling.

And yes, your guess is very educated. :)

A few twitterers claiming a deal has been agreed with Charlton. 700k mentioned, which sounds highly doubtful.

Anyone heard owt?

I'd be ok at that. Player of the season. How would we feel if we let Fleck, for example go for £700k? I'd say he's worth a lot more.

I think you've missed my point. Re-read what I posted mate.
I don't think I have. I think you're saying a Charlton POTS at £700k is fine because Fleck is worth a lot more than that, I disagree due to the age, improvement and league each respective player brings. Plus Holmes only has a year left and Fleck has two years left.

Fleck being a first teamer and Holmes being a squad player in the Championship being a prime example once he's here. (Guesswork from me obviously judged by our signings to date and hopefully even better players being brought in.)

The difference between the two players is huge in my opinion and that's why I wouldn't sign him mate, no matter what the fee to be honest.

As an up-front fee perhaps. I imagine deals we do this summer may involve an add-on if we stay up. 500k now, 250k if we stay up for example I'd be fine with.
Fair enough LB, I just wouldn't entertain him for any amount when you have players like Oztumer out there for not much more with a lot more resale value available, plus he's a better player imo.

Fair points. I was looking at it from a Charlton fans perspective. Im sure they would feel less than circa 700k in todays market was bad business on their clubs part. My point using Fleck was to illustrate how we would feel if we sold him for less then probably £1.5m.
I would like us to sign Holmes. His attitude and commitment levels are stunning and in line with Wilders modus operendi.
We'll soon see.

Again, fair enough, I just think there's better value out there with players like Oztumer.

He's 5 foot 3.
How in hell are we going to work a song round that name?

It's a no from me!:)

Ricky Holmes on the other hand!

I think it would be a cracking signing to be honest, would just be surprised to see us forking out that much but based on what I have seen I think it's money well spent. As said above his attitude and workrate are first rate before you even get to his ability. We also need another dead ball specialist because only Fleck consistently delivers on that front (Duffy and Coutts on their day as well).
