Do we really need Leonard AND Holmes?

Both will cost a fee and both will probably be on decent wages (by decent I'm talking 7-10k p/w).

This would give us Midfield options of:

Coutts,
Duffy
Fleck,
Carruthers,
Holmes,
Leonard

That's a max of 3 positions between 6 players. My question is, do we really need them both when we have potential cover in the youth team?

Is it actually worth getting Holmes (and lets be right, he'll be fighting with Carruthers and Duffy for a single spot), when we have a cheaper alternative in Brookes?

For the cost of the player, couple of hundred k and a decent enough contract, I think it's worth spending this on the Defence and using the likes of Brookes sparingly as a squad option.

Do you really need Leonard and Holmes? Yes if Wilder thinks so.

Leonard we need for the midfield competition/cover and should we need to go with three in the centre. Then it's one or the other between Holmes & Carey, Carey would be the signing that gives Duffy & Carruthers serious competition for the No.10 role. Whereas Holmes seems more suited to the left flank, coming inside all IMO of course. I'd love for us to sign both though!

Do we need them both . Emphatically yes .

Do we have a product of the Academy who should come before both of them ? Even emphaticallilly yesser .

Will Brooks get his chance? Emphatically not .

When will you gullible fools stop listening to that lying twat Wilder . Emphatically never .

Jesus wept guys . Wilder taking a closer look at Brooks means he's gone . Wakey wakey

I think that's very harsh Luke. Wilder is probably the most honest manager we've had in all the time I've been supporting them. Since 1970. He's not afraid to tell it like it is. He may be told to phrase things a certain way but I think the lad is ultimately honest with us and I really value him for that. Compare him to his predecessor who was a turd-polisher of the highest order and you'll see what I mean.

Who's Carey?

Mariah Carey?

To me we seem to have plenty. Or cover already. For forward &midfield players but that defense deffo needs strength, just remember how chessy strolled through

Yes but you have to factor in that our players had been on the booze for almost a month prior to the game

Fuck sake. It's that time of year where people insinuate that we're only trying to recruit for one position whilst neglecting all the others.

A crazy thought, I know, but.... imagine if we had funds for a CB or two as well as these midfield players.

I find that figure to be quite high. I wonder if that includes the maintenance and other expenses for the facilities, which the first team use also? It seems a lot to be paying in coaches' wages etc.

But you could be right. The accounts aren't very detailed. My own guess is that we've lost a lot of money because the managerial appointments haven't worked out and we've overpaid players.

I thought I saw it was a million a year upkeep somewhere but don't hold me to it.

I don't think it's that mate. I think we are financially not very strong at the present time. And before folks poo-poo that, just think for a moment that a club our size, with all the overheads, operating in Division 3 for 6 years really isn't good. I don't know if Sheff Utd do long term plans, I get the impression not! But in most businesses you'd have a minimum 5 year plan with projected revenues. When we fell out of the Championship that took a real dive. If we'd budgeted on being Championship or Premiership again, which I'm pretty sure we must have, then the last 6 years have been a financial disaster.

We are going to have to make up some ground financially. We seem to have found a manager, that can find players from lower divisions, on small wages, that can compete at a higher level. This is a real bonus to us. Because if we can make up some lost revenues with little outlay then it's a storming result and one which can turn the whole club around.

I've said it before, but my only concern about the current set-up is, will they actually be prepared to pay that bit extra for someone special who could really push the club along? I'm not sure we will tbh. It's not a "Sheffield" thing to pay good money for quality things. Sorry to say that and don't wish to offend - but it's not. This is the "bargain-basement" city in the entire country. People here "love" a bargain to the point of not appreciating that it's sometimes worth paying more for quality. The only doubt I have about Wilder - and don't get me wrong, I think he's a brilliant manager, one of the very, very best ever, but he has this "Sheffield" thing about spending "moneh". And that, I think, could eventually be his downfall.
I was about to like your post until I got to the second part, and your usual Sheffield hang up,

Our neighbours are currently paying out a fortune for players, probably outspending the whole division. They have the highest ticket prices in the league. How can it be concluded It's not a Sheffield thing to pay for quality?

The first half of your post nailed it, for me.

Like what I see if Leonard and would prefer him in midfield than having to stick Bash back in there.

Not a big fan of Holmes and I imagine the sticking point is paying north of 500k for a 30 year old with no experience at this level. Thought he was magic for 15 minutes against us then went missing when we stepped it up. No room for hiders this year

We could be playing 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 for plenty of games next season. Wilder's making the offers cause he knows what he wants / needs.

It's not a typical Sheffield thing though, it's a deluded pig thing. Try that on at the Lane and see what would happen. And quality it certainly isn't.

We still badly need pace and power, I think. We have barely a few who can provide this, when the Champ probably demands that we have at least half a team capable of it. The technical levels of the Champ may not be vastly above those of League 1, but the physical levels of the game most definitely are. For this reason, if Leonard really has what his reputation suggests he has, then he looks like the key signing of the two, for me.

But Wilder does seem to like a no.10--a decent testament to his footballing instincts ?--and Holmes would make a quality addition to Carruthers and Duff in that role. In our house, we're assuming that next season Carruthers will likely take over, at some stage, as first choice 10 ahead of Duff, who barely seemed to last a game in the final third of last season (v happy to be corrected on that) and who lacks the mobility of Samir. Wilder seems to like having a spare 10 on the bench, so you can see how a squad combination of Carruthers/Holmes would appeal to him.

Still think Leonard sounds the more important of the two.

We can make our own judgments about quality, but it clearly can't be an inherently Sheffield thing to avoid paying high prices (in s footballing context) when they are doing just that, on and off the pitch, across the city.

She was interviewed on C4 at the Formula 1 on Sunday. She looked like a fucking whale and was only capable of uttering vacuous comments. In doing so she managed to both look like and sound like a pig.
At the kids awards last month........well i don't know about you...but..download (4).jpg

Seriously snooty , and I mean really really seriously , how can the likes of you and all them other twerples listen to Wilder and believe owt that comes out of his trap ? Seriously ???? Really seriously ????? We are looking at Brooks more closely hahahahahahaha . Betis knows the score , how long before everyone else sees right through the liar of bramall lane ?

Think it's going over his and others heads. You are going to have to put smileys on it.

Holmes is just another quality attacking player, it'd be healthy to have him, Duffy and Carruthers competing for a spot. Two could play together at times.

Leonard is a different player entirely. From all accounts, he's an athletic box to box midfielder who's not scared to put a foot in. Also chips in with a few goals. He'd be a valuable addition, we don't have anyone like him.
But we all know what you said is a load of bollocks because he's playing his trade in league 1 so he's automatically shit, just ask any fowl. It's all about throwing £10 mil at a striker that bottles taking a penalty.

Not sure about any 'whoosh' there. This is the bloke who had a series of long rants about people having a beer before the game.

Option 1 - Bite and get involved in a tediously long thread with someone who is trolling
Option 2 - Ignore him, as most seem to have done so far.

Martin Brundle tried to talk to her over on Sky and was told to fuck off. He didn't seem particularly bothered.

Photoshop. I still wouldn't say no, I like something to get stuck into!

This from a bloke with Dianne Abbot in his avatar! Plenty to get 'stuck into there' although ear defenders and a strong two bag system would be a necessity.

Would have to tape her mouth up though.

God, imagine if she started singing part way through.

Mind you, still probably better than Abbot and her faux socialist me me me bollocks.

Excuse me she was a bit of a raver in her younger days till Corbyn got hold of her. I was going to say brainwashed her but she never had any! ;)

P.S. Please note the wink before you lefties pile in.

Brundle's turning into as big a diva as Maria Carey. Prefer the C4 mob, pity they don't get all the races.

When Wendy moved to Owlerton it was outside the city boundaries. I've never regarded them or their fans as part of Sheffield.

Wilder is probably the most honest manager we've had but you've essentially called him a liar in post #16 on this thread.
