What about the comment below that one? 'I know Ricky and he's not coming'.

Yeah seen that comment. It was posted after I stuck this one up on here

According to today's Star, Holmes is steadfastly refusing to sign the new contract at Charlton and has set his sights on coming to the Lane, so we'll see

I might eat my words here but am I the only one who is not particularly bothered if this one comes off or not....Leonard as well for that matter?

Neither seems to be blessed with pace and pace is what we desperately need!
I'm in the happy if they come off but not distraught if they don't camp. Along with pretty much everyone we're rumoured to be in for.

In previous transfer windows it's felt like our whole season was dependent on x or y signing and making all the difference. For the first time in fuckin ages it feels like what we have is good. We can look to build on it, add a bit of quality and a bit of depth/variation, but we are not starting from a position of weakness or desperation.

It's the most relaxed I've been in a transfer window for years. Almost no concern about us losing key players too :)

"There was a steely-eyed determination about Karl Robinson when he was asked the question.
The look he gave was one of someone who seemed to baulk at the suggestion that Ricky Holmes would be somewhere else next term."

Should have had his sights on the lane 12 months ago imo ...

That would have been the perfect time to sign him. Not convinced there isn't someone better we could get now we are in the league above.

I thought Charlton were the best team to visit the Lane last season and Ricky Holmes was their best player. Towards the back end of the game he drifted out of the game but that was probably due to United finishing the game off.

He probably realises that now, turned us down for more mone...er, family reasons.

Now it seems the family don`t matter

Does the back end of the game start after 12 minutes? Charlton offered little after that and Holmes was complete bobbins in the second half. If we sign him he'll be OK for the odd 10 minute cameo, but hopefully this doesn't drag on and lead to us missing out on better alternatives.

Can't argue with that and Holmes pulled the strings first half for sure but does he offer much more than Coutts/Carruthers, apart from a dangerous free kick?

Do you sit on the kop, with your back to the pitch?

Nobody offers more than Couttsy! :).
I ❤️ Him.

Seriously, Tufty's looking at the 'Duffy role' for Holmes, isn't he?

If it's a ten minute cameo we're after then yer man the Ginger Gnome himself would be ideal. :).

From the little I've seen, Holmes is a constant threat most games and certainly troubled the best team in the league everytime he was on the ball. Sure we ultimately overcame that because we're a much better team.

I'd sign Holmes for sure. In fact it's elementary.

Was that down to Holmes or to CW making a little tactical adjustment to stop him from playing?

If we sign Holmes, does carruthers have a role as I see him as the player to,threaten Duffy no. 10 role?

You'd have to think he'd want to come to us. At 30 years young this is probably his last chance at playing in the Championship unless Charlton come up next season, something i highly doubt.

I seem to remember CW words to the effect of Charlton had made him an offer he couldn't refuse so I don't blame him for going there at the time - just as you couldn't blame him for wanting to join Utd now.

Any idea how much the deal is likely to be worth if he does indeed turn down their offer of an improved contract?

I was being a little tongue in cheek there!

No idea how much he would cost though, I have heard that Charlton are doing everything to keep him.
Think it would kill Robinson to lose him to us.

Charlton are trying to price us out of any deal, paid £200k, want approaching 5 times that for a 30 year old League One player.

Hearing Holmes has rejected the contract on offer at the Valley.

They know that we were daft enough to pay that for Done.
I would move on, Carruthers can play in a similar position and sure there are similar talents available on loan from the premiership.

I sit on the kop (though I face the pitch) and I thought that Holmes was brilliant for the first 20 minutes but terrible after that. His corners were floated in and generally over hit and the two shots he had in the second half landed somewhere in the top tier of the away end. Personally I thought he was the type of player who made himself look busy without really doing much. The people sat around me on the kop seemed to have a similar opinion too.

At 30 years old I reckon we could do better.

Yep, just read that elsewhere - a clever if unsurprising move from Charlton. I doubt they'll want/be able to keep him if he/his representative push hard for a move so I assume it will land somewhere between what Charlton paid for him and what they're currently demanding.

Interesting that Brentford are apparently also in for him which won't make him any easier or cheaper to land

No particular dig at you LG but one of my bugbears is when people say "we could do better" about prospective signings but don't then suggest preferred alternatives. Who would you prefer Utd to sign instead given Utd's budget constraints and level of 'pull factor' i.e. a newly promoted club in the Champ based in South Yorkshire?

When I say 'we could do better' it's based on the assumption that there is better out there and that our scouting and management team should be able to identify them. I could try to put some names forward but I don't work as a scout so my opinion would be based on very little. Are you suggesting we should sign (or at least be discussing the possibility on here) anybody just because a football fan on an internet forum can't provide the name of a better alternative?

From what I've seen of Holmes (which is very little but still just as much as many on here) he's no better than Duffy and Carruthers. Wouldn't it be better to look at someone who improves our squad? Graham Carey looks good but that's just based on the video montage that's been posted on the other thread.

Well, if the club are going for Holmes, it would suggest the scouting and recruiting team at the club haven't identified any better alternatives. Of course, the club should try to recruit the best possible players they can afford and that will be willing to join the club, however, every signing is a gamble and recruitment is not a science (although the Brentford owner may disagree).

Personally, I'd like to see a couple of players signed with Champ experience - neither Holmes nor Carey have this.

If, however, there are no such options on the club's list that are currently available, someone who plays in the same attacking midfield role who I've always been impressed with and who is rumoured to be on the move this summer is Brad Potts at Blackpool. He's rumoured to be heading to Ipswich for around £500k.

Wilder's tactics stopped Holmes bossing the game. We went 442 and pushed Basham in midfield to get closer to Holmes. This is why he faded, that and because United grew into the game the longer it went on.

It's no coincidence that he has been mentioned on plenty of occasions in these two threads
