We didn't really get chance to judge him as a player at the time of his sale, so it's hard to for anyone to have an opinion unless you watched the youth team/saw his loan spells.

1 year later, he's definitely worth a hell of a lot more than £1.5m and you can't really defend the money we received. It's up to the coaching staff etc to spot talent at the club and not sell them on the cheap.
It will only look cheap if he pushes on much further than he is now, and there is a long way to go.

If the sale of one youth player funded the wages of 3 or 4 first team players in a championship winning team that looks like bloody good business to me.

Last summer we needed investment for the here and now not for some mythical time in the future.

If selling DCL helped us achieve promotion you could say that we got £1m or what it was for the player and an incidental bonus of £20m plus because we went up, and without the sale we may well not have done.

We won on the deal, DCL won (financially) on the deal, and the only potential losers are now Everton, but their liability is restricted by the price they paid and their subsequent investment in the player, and they can afford it more than we can.

Bloody good deal and management all round I say.

You can't argue with what we achieved last season, but who's to say we wouldn't have won the league with DCL at the club?

We got to the top of the league by January with little/no contribution from Clarke or Hanson. DCL might have put us in a better position with more points on the boards or we could have been worse off. It's all ifs and buts, it's history now so we'll never know what might have been had we kept DCL.

Little or no contribution from Hanson or Clarke ???
DCL made no contribution when he played and hasn't for Everton from what Ive seen ,but to say that about Hanson and Clarke is unbelievable.

I said until January, maybe my point wasn't clear. My point was that the team hardly struggled without Hanson or Clarke so it's possible that we could have been promoted with DCL in the team rather than Clarke and Hanson.

DCL making a big impact at Everton is obviously going to be difficult for a 19 year old, making 11 appearances with 1 goal is a pretty decent start for a young player at a club that qualified for the Europa League.

I have seen him play for us and about 4 games for Everton , he has looked way out of his depth every game I have seen. wasn't sorry to see him go and think we got the better of the deal ,but obviously someone sees something in him ,lets see if we get proved wrong.

Obviously it's still early days in his career, but he's impressed Koeman enough in 1 year to earn a 5 year contract.

We've sold a player for £1.5m who is currently worth a hell of a lot more than that.

It's always going to be difficult to hang on to young players when Premier League clubs come calling, in the cases of Mellis and Slew, we were always going to struggle but was DCL pushing for a move like Mellis and Slew?

It would be nice to keep young players until they are 21/22 and established in the first team and give us the chance to sell them for bigger fees like we did with Maguire.

Im comfortable in the signings we made with the money from the sale of DCL ,and believe they were much better for us than a season of him sat on the bench would have been.

Chris Wilder was in the perfect position to judge if he would be able to contribute to United last season or if the money received from his sale would be better invested in other players, because he had DCL on loan at Northampton, history shows he got it spot on

Is it too much to ask for both? We did cash in on Adams after all.

£1.5m is absolute peanuts in football, it's Zlatan's monthly salary at Man U ffs! A club of our size should be able to resist small offers and be able to hold out for bigger fees.

A player like DCL might turn out to be a lower league player but he could just as easily be worth £10m+ by the end of next season. Surely it's got to be worth a gamble?

A gamble on a young player maybe coming good,or doing what Chris did reinvesting the money received on experienced players to get us out of the awful league we had been in for 6 seasons, our manager was proved correct,a glance at the league table tells you that doesn't it?

Again, why can't we show some ambition and back Wilder whilst not selling our promising young players for peanuts?

I would say it's all down to finances, budgets that a manager has to work within in,maybe now we are a Championship team we will have a better chance of hanging on to young talent,or maybe soon as DCL heard of the interest from a Premier league team,he told United he wanted to move, the wage rise will have been very significant I would imagine

Great logic, starts for Everton, but not good enough for Sheffield United!
Wow. Starts a couple of proper games for Everton and would have single handedly fired Sheffield United out of a League 1 and probably the Championship. Regardless of Hussy and Wilson playing all year.

Stop twisting what people say to make your own weird little points.

Exactly League 1 teams don't keep players when Prem teams come sniffing.... and for every DCL there are 10 young players that went to the prem for a similar price and did fuck all.

It's not though is it, when have I said he would single handedly fire us to promotion? Who's twisting things now?

If he can make 11 appearances for Everton, chances are he'd be good enough to make a decent amount of appearances for us. Let's put it another way, how many of our current squad would get into Everton's team? Not very many, if any!

Just because a player wants to leave doesn't mean we have to sell them on the cheap!

Maybe DCL had no intention of leaving, yet from out of the blue Everton came and made him and the club an offer that both found impossible to turn down,do you think United should have stood in the lads way ?

No, but I think we should get a good deal for United.

Charlton didn't stand in Lookman's way but they got £7.5m, rising to £11m. I'm not convinced that Lookman was worth 5 times as much as DCL.

Er.... That's my point. It's easy to twist. I never said he wasn't good enough for 2/3 starts and a load of sub appearances. My point was 1mill for a bit part player that we couldn't stop going (and allowed us to improve our side - that went on to smash the league) wasn't the worst business in the world.

You made it sound like he's first name on the team sheet at Everton but wouldn't be for us which is crazy talk.

Different circumstances and different brackets of player. By your logic I'm pretty sure DCL is not worth 1million John Flecks...

Well somebody at Everton did,and any player is only worth what somebody is willing to pay, what figure should United have held out for DCL?

Life in retrospect is easy, when DCL was sold hardly anyone thought that we had not got a good deal.

Drop it , move on!

Personally I would be starting negotiations at £5m and maybe settle for £3m with another £1m in add ons.

That's because most on here hardly saw him play! Surely it's the job of the coaching staff to identify potential in players, then not sell them on the cheap?

I'm not saying mistakes won't be made as some great players have been rejected by clubs, but we just seen to struggle to sell our players for decent money. How much did we lose out on by selling Kyle Walker after only 7 appearances?

At the time he was sold it was good value and for that matter may well still be.

You know if you take a photo of a man diving off a diving board you would think he can fly, life moves on and opinions change

As a Blade I've been fed up and still am that time and time again we've let some of our youth players go on the cheap, but in DCL's case I really don't think anyone at the time could've said that we should've negotiated the figures as high as the ones you mention above.

More often than not its hindsight in a lot of cases and this case certainly seems that way, you just don't know how successful its going to turn out for the player moving to his bigger club!

Based on what? having a time machine and seeing him score the winner in an World Cup final? Behave.

Based on the current transfer market, £1.5m is fuck all! Bang average Championship players earn more than that a year!

To me the coaching staff should be spotting the potential in players. If they have the potential to be Premier League regulars then the price must reflect that, Everton were buying potential not the finished article. If he turns into the next Romelu Lukaku, £3m is an absolute steal!

But my preference would have been to keep him another 2 or 3 years and develop him into a £10m or even £20m player.

How many games did Lookman play for Charlton in the championship? How many did DCL play in the championship?
How many clubs were in for DCL and how many for Lookman?

See your point. However there's a time to sell assets and a time to let value appreciate. We probably needed the money for strengthening too much to let that happen though. I was arguing this at the time. Everton have Unsworth and Duncan Ferguson who have close ties with our academy. They got in before there was competition.
