It was common knowledge that cricket played at Bramall lane was holding the club back financially ( not enough seating which had a premium on standing )Dick Wragg. was chairman at the time and he kept pushing for a stand to be built on the cricket area,it was early 1970 s before he got his wish.He obviously had trouble with the cricket loving directors (not all but some ) I am a cricket fan who watched Yorkshire at the lane but I could see the logic in this move and like most blades was pleased this was happening.
The rest is history !, since then our fortunes have been up and down like a yo yo,it was built with the idea of making us a power ,the opposite has happened ! makes you wonder if a spell has been cast on us, let's hope wilder has got rid of the curse.

So, under a backdrop of falling attendances and revenue we decided that an idea that might have made sense twenty years previous, to build another stand, was still a good idea. Just as the oil crisis was kicking off.

I have absolutely no prior knowledge of this, but that does sound like a decision a Sheffield United board would make.

It was sensible to get rid of cricket ,we had just got back into 1st division with an exciting team we had great opportunity to become a force it didn't happen but at least the stand was built

I think now would be a good time to bring it back with advent of the city franchised twenty20 league. Yorkshire should come home

I don't think you can blame the Board entirely - there were quite a few fans who had been asking for something down that touchline for a while.
Any one else remember "The Fourth Side Committee"?

Even Ben Stokes would struggle to hit the ball further out of the ground than Jonathan Forte used to.

We're still pressing on with Holmes according to this. Must say I'm a bit surprised with Mackay-Steven being reported at the moment but I guess they both offer something different in similar positions.

Cardiff, Leeds and Wednesday all interested apparently.

Think it's a case of Wilder not wanting to be left high and dry if a preferred target doesn't arrive. As transfer strategies go, it's quite sensible to have your fingers in a few pies, that way you can still add to your existing squad and not be left without. I'm sure Wilder has his priorities, but until their signature is on a United employment form it's best to cast his net wide in order to ensure he gets the players he wants.
 
Possible reasons why this transfer is dead in the water - which I believe it is IMO
1. Karl Robinson hates us
2. Holmes doesn't want to move north
3. Holmes would have forced the issue by now if he wanted the move
4. Charlton are giving him ridiculous wages we don't want to meet
5. We're being outpriced / outbid by other suitors in the Championship
6. We've turned our attention to Gary-Mackay Steven
7. Wilder is on his jollys (?)

Purely opinion. Interesting thing is - this is the first transfer window where we're really being challenged to secure the signatures of players - up until now it's been a doddle getting lads through the door - bar one or two (e.g. McFadzean).

In Wilder we Trust!!
 
I think some are forgetting that Holmes is contracted to charlton.

If they don't want to sell him they don't have to, and fact is the smarmy scouse twat doesn't like doing us any favours so will make it as hard as possible. Another fact, is that in a poor side he was a shining light, and by far and away their best player. Someone they may prefer to build a team around.
So it wouldn't be unthinkable for them to be trying everything to get him to stay and sign a new contract.

However, the fact he signed a fairly short deal in the first place over us, says he felt they were a better bet for going up. Ooopppss....he is now probably regretting that decision. But if he wants to come, there's really only so much he can do to force the issue. It's still early in the window so Charlton are still in no rush to sell, so will string it out perhaps hoping that we will look elsewhere and leave Holmes no avenue to leave.

Whatever it is, I still trust the manager to get it right.
 
Whenever Karl Robinson's name is mentioned, 'smarmy' won't be far behind. And rightly so. That word was basically invented for him.

And how many times have we sold players that are under contract and then been told by many Blades fans that if the player wants to go there's nothing we can do to stop it. If Holmes wants to come to the Lane that's where he'll end up, whether he's under contract or not.

Didn't say he wouldn't go.
But it might not be as quick as we like for the reasons stated. And Robinson is also being shown up as an average manager, if he loses the one player he's got he's in an even bigger mess....plus I get the feeling he's a little bitter he never got the job at ours.
 
There's a lot of reasons that this deal won't happen (Robinson, new contract offer, a move north etc.) with the lure of CW and Champ footie being the only reasons why it may.
 

If the player is determined it will happen. But Charlton will probably spin it out to cause as much nuisance for player and us that's all.

It's a waste of time, but if that's the way they want to work it will bite them in the arse one day. After all, we have a few players who might be in need of games later in the season who have league one promotion experience
