Top stuff, wish I had seen that.

I loved it today, my only slight frustration being that I couldn't do the pubs as I was with my little lad. Had to wait until I got home before I hit the beers. Well sozzled now though o_O

You're allowed to say "fucking" on here. :)

That's very sad. Of all the remaining boozers on London Road, the Barrel is the one with the most traditional, homely feel to it.

Sad news indeed .

My association with the Barrel goes right back to the late 1950’s when it was the pub of choice for me and my mates , prior to tripping the light fantastic with some of the pretty ladies who were to be found at the nearby Locarno Ballroom of a Saturday night .

Owners of commercial buildings like shops & bars/ pubs would rather put the rent up & see it go empty rather than see their building looked after and receive an income.

It’s crazy, there’s empty units all over Sheffield now because of this.

* Country

Also when the people running a pub leave it may not just be down to that. Pub might be changing hands or turning into housing etc etc
Yes I get & agree with that but how many shops are vacant now? Like you said any city centre or town you visit there’s sometimes more empty units than taken ones.

Sad news. Some great characters in there over the years, decent pint as well. Sad for the staff.

A lot of PubCo. type owners don’t care about the actual pub, just the rent. And reading what they exiting landlords have said, it sounds as if this may be the case here, too.

Remember going on one of Kaz's coaches to Leeds one year. Started in there at about 7 in the morning for a 3pm kick off. Battered before I'd even got on the coach.

Salt of the earth staff and punters. One of the last remaining traditional boozers near the Lane. Can't say I've been in loads over the years, but the times I have, I can't remember getting home so that usually means I've had a good time.

Owner will have had someone on offering way more than the current lease for them to turn it into more bastard flats.

Our sunday team was based at the Barrel for a few years when Bill Stanaway had it, with Brian and John his willing helpers. Yorkshires with gravy and chips for Sunday dinner were the bomb. Great times.

Was that before Bill had the Royal Oak? (which became the Beer Engine) on Cemetery Road early 80's.
Used to go in there on a Friday dinner from Dormer.

I thought that Bill moved from the Barrell to the Red House although my memory has a tendency to play tricks on me.

I think his timeline was Royal Oak - Red House-Barrel - a pub in dronfield (maybe the Old sidings) Always took Fat Bri and John with him and sponsored our football team, ironically the only time we got to a final was when we were sponsored by the Devonshire on Eccy Rd by Mick and Greta, when Bill was between pubs.

Think people need to delve a little deeper here.

There's a bit more to this than the usual.

Bill had the acorn at high green ,then the Yorkshire grey he opened it also had the royal oak at the same time .later he moved to the sidings ,proper landlord (ex copper )

Do Enterprise still own the Barrel? Sure they used too.
