Fair enough mate, personally I'd take Umbro kits like we used to have any day. Since we've just got out of Division 3 and hope to do what we did in 1990 and go up again I'd love the return of this shirt or something similar!

? You don't like the current shirts because they're templates but like the Umbro shirts of the late 80's/early 90's that are .... templates?

I don't like the current Adidas shirt or any of the other home Adidas shirts because they don't have red and white stripes on the whole shirt and have large areas where its just one colour. The templates are a secondary issue but to my knowledge back in the 80's and 90's no other striped team had the same shirt as us. I recall that most clubs had Umbro back in the 80's and early to mid 90's and no other striped team had the same shirt as us or the away shirt as proved by the photos I attached. The Umbro shirts were also completely striped - as our kits should be.

It's not just Adidas, our Le Coq shirts were also not fully striped either. You have to go back to the Patrick shirt around 2000 for the last totally striped shirt, without any symbols/emblem on the shoulders. See beneath mate.

Ever?! Seriously! I'd say any of the 80's Umbro kits were quality. Not just one season but all of their 80's and 90's ones, with the possible exception of the last one with the crap red and white trim on the shorts. But some of the below efforts are classics in my eyes, I'd take any of them over any Adidas shirt we've had:

The bottom kit is great - not with string though and I prefer black shorts

I agree we definitely look better in black shorts. That's the only season we've ever played in white shorts as a home kit. It somehow looked good at the time to be fair.

Well you didn't miss much by all accounts. We were relegated and the powers that be dropped white shorts because they thought them unlucky!

Interesting! White shorts never looks quite right to me either but that said the 2002 - 2004 season an 1992 - 1994 had some great memories. Not so much relegation in 94 to be fair! Its a real shame in my view that kits don't last more than one season now. I'd be more inclined to buy one if they lasted two seasons. I generally only buy them at the end of the season for a tenner! Tight I know!

I'd fancy a return to Umbro once the Adidas contract expires. A good English brand that's been dragged through the mud by shit owners in recent years.

I like umbro as a brand
Problem is mark "towie" wright is the face of umbro
If only his mrs had more to do with it

It's also wort remembering that a lot of unitedites hated that kit at the time due to its untraditional pinstripe look and nostalgia of the period and moreover the quality of manufacture which wasn't made with mass manufacture in mind

I had that shirt. The collar drove me insane.

As many have pointed out
Thick stripes are better (although I did like last years kit, thought it looked really smart)

The 94 shirt with the lace up neck is my favourite if you could manage to find one with a red stripe down the centre. The 96-97 Avec effort was good too. Oh for a simple shirt design with stripes but no plain red or black bits tagged on as an after thought summat like we wore in the early 70's.
