Possible summer targets

Carruthers will be picked in front of Duffy imo. Duffy is far too inconsistent for championship level to be starting every week. Just look at tonight he was dreadful in the first half

To be fair, so was Fleck (& a few others).

We'll need at one, possibly two, centre-half's to give us the stability we'll need. The quality of offensive play will be higher than we've been used to, so reinforcements are a necessity. I hope Wright surprises all of us and acquits himself in the Championship as well as he's done in Division 1, but I've no doubt Wilder and Knill are ahead in their planning and already have recruitment targets for next season lined up.

Looking forward to next season in ways I can only describe as intense optimism and excitement. UTMB!

Tbh I'm not sure he'll be a regular next season, although I'd give him a better chance of making the step up in the 10 position rather than the wide role he's played previously. Carruthers will probably be our main man for that position with a full pre season behind him.

But I really doubt we'll see anyone play the number 10 role better than Duffy has this season.

They have to be judged not only on goals/assists, but by how often they get on the ball and how well they use it. Duffy gets on the ball a hell of a lot compared to most players in that position, never hides, and he rarely gives it away. The least he does is get us into good areas, even when he's not playing well. It's beyond me how anyone can criticise him this season.

Totally agree about Duffy.
Probably my favourite player, free role popping up in the spaces between attack and midfield.
He's our secret weapon regards much of our creativity. When he's missing we lose a lot of creativity.

The only thing I do disagree with though is that Duffy (a bit like Quinn a few years ago) is guilty of giving the ball away. Coutts always tried the easy pass, rarely losing possession where as Duffy will run with the ball, take on a man and play difficult ambitious passes, some times they come off creating chances but other times he gives the ball away. He's the midfielder that gives the ball away the most. He's also not the best defensively when we don't have possession. Some would say Duffy is a luxury player that will shine in league 1 but maybe struggle in the Championship, will be interesting to see how he copes.

He gives it away more than others but usually when trying something more difficult. His basic control and ball retention is very good.

Defensively he's better than anyone else we've got in that position. He's hardworking, committed and wins the ball back quite a lot, more than anyone else in that position, including Scougall.

Might get Neymar now as he got sent off at Malaga last night as Barca lost 0-2
cost them the title
but could do a job here, if he can get in the team

I think a great staring point now is looking at which teams in this league can we pick on should they not get promoted. There's a lot of quality players there that will be keen to go to a higher up club so won't necessarily cost the world.

Of the teams currently in the playoffs I'd go for a provisional list of:

Fleetwood: Mclauglin, Bell, Ball, Cole
Bradford: Meredith, Marshall, Knight-Percival, Vincelot, Wyke
Scunthorpe: Morris, Wallace, Adelakun, Madden
Millwall: Webster, Gregory, Hutchinson, Onyedinma

On top of that there are various loan players we can go in for out of that list that would also improve the squad (Brannagan, Toney, Dempsey) and loads of players outside the top six who have played well and give their right bollock for a chance with us in the championship.

I would like to see us go for some young loan players from the Prem. There are some good players up there that could make a big difference for us. I would say we are a fairly desirable club for young players to come to. Good facilities, good stadium with a large crowd.

Here are just a few off of the top of my head.

Lewis Baker - Chelsea
Cameron Borthwick-Jackson - Man U
Enes Unal - Man City
Aaron Mooy (not so young) - Man City
Christian Atsu (25) - Chelsea
Dominic Solanke (out of contract) - Chelsea
Tammy Abraham - Chelsea (linked with Leicester though)

There are tons of talent that the big clubs have hoovered up that aren't getting a look in.

I agree, there are plenty of players I have seen this year capable of playing further up and won't break any budgets

Cullen from West Ham m, lad on loan at Bradford. There are quite a few players who I think will do well when stepping up. The lad Reece Burke on loan to Wigan could be another target though

There is Brendan Galloway from Everton was on loan at West Brom but didnt play too much.

LB isn't a huge priority to strengthen but we will need cover there and I would imagine he isn't on too much money.

My shopping list:-

Conor McAleny (Everton)
Danny Ward (Rotherham)
Ricky Holmes (Charlton)
Josh Scowen (Barnsley)
Declan John (Cardiff)
Angus McDonald (Barnsley)
Lee Camp (Rotherham)

3 I'd like us to at least look at:

Sam Gallagher (Soton, on loan at Blackburn. Striker)
Luke Chambers (Ipswich, a good centre half and captain that McCarthy plays at RB. See if he wants to get back to his roots in a RCB role. Championship experience x500...)
Jamie Paterson (Bristol City, a winger who needs his career reinvigorating. A good player, pacy with an eye for goal. Will be good if we need to change formations next season and they're possibly going to go down so... makes sense)

I'd be surprised if many of them would fit into our wage structure. Wasn't it Solanke that wanted £50000 a week to stay at Chelsea?

Definitely more realistic for us. I don't see use being big spenders and I don't believe Wilder will want us to be.

I'm liking this one at the moment.

Jackson Irvine (CM) - Had a great season for Burton after being linked with us last summer. Would be quite costly though. Cash plus Brayford perhaps?

Two birds.
One stone kind of thing..though reckon someone in the Prem/Top end Champ might have a stab at him...

In terms of incomings I reckon we'll need around six summer signings, so something along the lines of

GK: Etheridge
CB: Webster
LWB/RWB: Riley (loan)
LW: Holmes
ST: Gregory
+ another forward thinking midfielder with pace & abit of directness in his play (can't think of many right now) *EDIT - just seen Sammi Ameobi mentioned in the first post. He would be ideal!

this would suit me fine.

I was thinking about this post I did awhile back and whilst a couple of those targets I'd like here I'd also like to see us go for players like the following (sticking with players linked already or who I think Wilder may go in for),

Neil Etheridge, Ben Coker, Ryan Leonard, Joe Riley, Marcus Maddison, Sam Gallagher, Lee Gregory &/or Danny Ward.

I see us going down the Barnsley route and signing fairly young players and some plucked from out current divison and below. So those there + another experienced championship centre half would for me would be inside our budget for next season surely and they would give us decent options throughtout the squad.

Maddison is certainly someone I hope Wilder is considering because if he was to come in & Wilder was then able to get him going in the championship he'd have some serious sell on value, we'd recoup whatever it'd take to sign him (£1m/£1.5m?)and then some.

I'm thinking we should go for Maddison too.

He's young, can play on either side, behind a striker and even left wing back. Add to that his obvious ability and the probability that Wilder would get the best out of him and paying £2m or so for him would be a no brainer.

In one signing we'd be covering a few positions, getting a set piece taker and gaining quite a big asset. His value could rocket after one good season, especially as he's the eye catching type of player.

I'd still want to sign a right sided player though, like Tendayi Darikwa.

So I looked up the Solanke claim and you are right about the 50k. Signing him out of contract wont be an option however if he signs a contract with Chelsea he wont be any where near their first team and with loans you don't necessarily pay 100% of the wages.

As I said in my post they were off of the top of my head 1 or 2 may not be attainable but there a some that will be plus others that I haven't mentioned.

Jason McCarthy (Southampton/Walsall) and Lasse Vigen Christensen have both been linked and to me they look like ideal targets.

Another name I'll throw in is Ryan Bennett, the centre half at Norwich. Only a year left on his contract and can't be guaranteed games there. Maybe £1.5m would get him.

Two strikers who could be worth a mention are Kenneth Zohore and Apostolos Vellios, at Cardiff and Forest respectively. Zohore's come into good form recently and Cardiff are more likely than most clubs to sell players. Vellios is a decent target man and all rounder who I think has more to offer than he's shown, not starting regularly for Forest.

This one might be a tad ambitious, but what about Daniel Johnson at Preston? We should've had him in January 2015 but we were too consumed by wasting £1.5m on Brayford and were clueless from top to bottom. He would've cost 50k then. He'd cost a lot more now but he's not started every game for Preston so he might be gettable. He'd be a quality option for the number 10 position.

Johnson is a great shout and someone I thought of the other day when I noticed he was on the bench for PNE.

Another potential option and someone who as far as I'm aware is out of contract this summer is Doukara from Leeds. Initially he didn't impress me but this season he has come on quite abit and would offer another physical presence up top when required.

Cardiff are quite an interesting club to look at. They don't seem the most stable or logical, their owner seems dodgy and they have a few players who'd be good for us who they might let go.

Semi Ajayi has been on loan at Rotherham and apparently he's been impressive for them. 23 year old 6"4 centre half.

I've already mentioned Craig Noone, maybe Anthony Pilkington could also be a possibility. Versatile attacking midfielder and genuinely two footed.

Matt Connolly, Declan John and Kenneth Zohore have also been mentioned on this thread already.

And probably the most random shout so far.... Idriss Saadi, a striker they signed a couple of years ago, but they never gave him a chance. He's gone on loan to Kortrijk in Belgium this season and scored 14 in 29 in a very average side (they're 10th out of 18). Looks like he had a similar record for Clermont on Ligue 2 in 2014/15. If Zohore's doing well now he's been given a chance maybe Saadi could do the same. I'd imagine he'll be available this summer. There's a video of him here, looks like a striker with a decent all round game.

I think Ajayi has gone to Toytown on a perm.

Yep, you're right.

If he's as good as he sounds then that maybe proves how careless Cardiff are at the minute. They're hardly flying high, and if they have a promising 23 year old centre half they shouldn't get rid of him as easy as that.

How about Brandon Barker?

Lot of talk about him a season or two back. Been playing on loan in the Dutch second tier with NAC Breda this season.

Don't know anything about him but do we really want someone not good enough for Preston's first team ?

He's more than good enough for Preston's first team, he's usually in it. I think our style would suit him better though.
