This will not be a full report as so many saw it or were there…..Sadly I was not able to get a ticket for the game but did go to the beam back with my lad and a few others. So my report is not a totally accurate reflection as you can only see so much on TV/Screens…..but here goes…..

Fortunately, I am at every other game left and will do reports. I also will start compiling a few specials for the end of the season; my School Report and also a Farewell to League One with some thoughts and reflections on the last 6 years. Not wrote either of these yet so these will appear once the season is officially finished in 3 weeks time.

-----

It was an expectant afternoon for the Blades with 1,456 fans (and probably many more in home ends and on the hills) at the Sixfields and over 6,000 fans at Bramall Lane watching the game being beamed back on giant screens. United knew a win would send them up but also had the comfort that they only needed to match the Fleetwood result to seal promotion.

Manager Chris Wilder has shown he is not afraid to make big decisions and his latest gamble saw him leave out skipper and leading scorer Billy Sharp; along with key men Mark Duffy and James Hanson. Sharp had looked leggy in the last few games but it was still a big call as it was to leave the others out. He brought in the hero from the week Leon Clarke, Samir Carruthers and Jay O’Shea. It seemed O’Shea would start just behind Clarke. Paul Coutts began as skipper. Northampton had former Blade Jon O’Toole in their line up and included experienced performers Lewis Nyatanga, Marc Richards and Matty Taylor.

The game began bathed in bright sunshine and the Blades were on the front foot and had some really good chances. Decent built up led to the ball sitting up nicely for Carruthers to hit a dipping half volley that caromed off the top of the bar and behind. Keeper Smith was well beaten and grasping air. Soon after a chance came for O’Shea but he curled his shot wide. Coutts then also shot over. It had been a really promising start and no sign of any nerves as United looked to get over the line.

However, Northampton came back into the game and slowly started to take control and they also had a series of chances. Richards fired over when he ought to have done better before Anderson shot wide. Soon after they had a great chance as Smith got in on goal but Moore made a really good reaction save to flick the ball away. United had started to give the ball away and Lafferty was beaten twice down the left-hand side and the Blades had to clear.

News had come in that both Bolton and Fleetwood were losing in their games and cheers went around both the Sixfields and those watching back at Bramall Lane.

The sloppy play continued for both sides but United had a chance when Fleck took a free kick from the angle but it was comfortable for Smith at his near post. There was a minute signalled of additional time but in this time the home side stunned the Blades by scoring the opener. The defence let the ball bounce and Smith nodded on for RICHARDS to get on the ball on the angle. It seemed only a half chance but he took the ball on and powered it into the angle of bar and post giving Moore no chance. It was a superb strike but the defence could have reacted better in the original build up and to get out to the striker. The half time whistle came straight after. Despite the late blow, results elsewhere meant United were still in position for promotion.

Manager Wilder did not mess around and made a change straight away with skipper Sharp on for Carruthers. United started well and won two early corners. From the second the ball fell to O’Connell who thumped a shot that Smith saved at his near post. On 53 minutes Hanson came on for O’Shea as Wilder signalled his intents once again as the Blades now had 3 up top.

News came in that Oldham has doubled their lead over Fleetwood meaning United in all reality were probably nearly there and the promotion party really began to start when just after the hour the Blades were level; Fleck played a ball through and CLARKE beat the offside trap and took a touch steadied himself before coolly placing the ball high past Smith’s right hand side and into the top of the net. Numerous Blades piled on the pitch to celebrate with the players and the game was delayed for a period until they returned to their seats.

After this it was all United and Northampton could not get into the game at all. The sense of momentum and belief continued to flow through the players and it was wave after wave of attack. Sharp was in but his deflected shot was sent behind for a corner. Basham’s header was somehow kept out from the keeper Smith from point blank range. Sharp was in again but Smith did well to save this time as the game entered the final 15 minutes. Clarke then header over after a good cross from Lafferty.

Ebanks Landell came on for Clarke as the game entered the final stages and results were still going United’s way. Regardless of that the Blades were determined to go out in glory and kept attacking. Fleck had a shot saved from Smith before Hanson flicked on but the ball was cleared before Sharp could get there.

With the game entering the final 2 minutes, a dramatic and jubilant late winner came in front of the United fans. Sharp did the running down the right and played it into the box, FLECK got there first and touched past two defenders and then as the keeper came out, composed himself and poked home. Cue delirium. More Blades fans entered the field to celebrate and this time the delay was even longer before the game could restart.

There was an extra 5 minutes to be played but little happened apart from United keeping the ball sensibly and ended this period being the more likely to score again. All that was needed for the referee to stage managed the final whistle the best he could so that players could get off the field. His whistle came but most United players were engulfed by the fans that stormed onto the pitch. One fan grabbed a corner flag, another the ball (see Sunji’s post on S2 for who got it!) and flares were set off in celebration. Skipper Billy Sharp was hoisted shoulder high by United fans and held a red and white sharp aloft as he joined in the singing! After the game, the players came back out and Wilder led the chanting with his rendition of ‘Shoreham boys! We are here!’ from above the tunnel. Back at Bramall Lane a similar pitch invasion was held with an impromptu mass game of football started by some bright spark who had the foresight to bring a ball! It was all good natured and after 6 years of disappointment and pain you could not deny the supporters the chance to celebrate.

United – Well we did it. We are up! Deservedly so. We have been the best side in the league all season and the last few weeks/months have shown no sign of relenting and powered on. Whilst others keep dropping points and showing inconsistency we do not. The results and performances continue to be of a high level and whilst recently we have not quite dominated teams like we had been doing, we are still deservedly winning games. The level of commitment has remained high and the team has not had any let ups. To not even lose one game since Fleetwood (13 unbeaten) and to lose just 2 in 22 sums it up. We just keep getting the results. Wilder had been sensational in having the team at it every game.

Today we could have easily seen the results elsewhere and not gone for it like we did, but the management of Wilder and leadership of Sharp (when he came off the bench) inspired them to not only get one goal, but two and the win. We were ok to start the game and played some decent football. In hindsight, the changes did not really work. You felt maybe a few needed a rest and freshening up but Wilder admitted that it did not lead to the energy he wanted despite an ok start to the game as we tailed off. Carruthers was patchy, Clarke not really in it and O’Shea a peripheral figure for the most part. They scored a late goal and you felt here we go again, despite the results elsewhere and that it would be a bit of a let-down or to get promoted with a loss.

However, second half Sharp came on and helped change things. He led the team and was able to help us get a foothold. We kept going forward and made another positive change and it paid off. It was great to get the win and it seemed the players were so determined to do it as they could easily have just seen things out at 1-1. That change in us going from losers in mentality (some of players were here last season) to winners has been superb and Wilder had to really take credit for that.

Not much more to say other than what a season it has been! It is not finished yet either. I feel as confident as I have ever done as a United fan that there will be no let-up (even with the celebrations this weekend) and think we will get 100 points and win the last four. If we do not then we will certainly do enough to win the league and it seems it will more than likely happen next weekend, pending what Bolton do at Oldham. Be nice if we could do it at the Lane v Bradford so no issues if Bolton win assuming we take care of business at Vale Park.

Northampton – First half they could have been behind after 10 minutes as we started well and had a few chances. They gradually grew into the game and then had a few chances of their own. They probably shaded things in terms of football and also chances. However, it seemed it would be 0-0 but fair play to their lad who hit a great strike. It stunned United.

Second half they were never really in it and other than a few set plays that they wasted most of the game was played in their half and they could not handle the tempo and relentless attacking play of United. They were hanging on when it went to 1-1 and seemingly just wanted to try and get a point and showed no attacking intent at all. The goal was kind of inevitable as they sat further back all second half and invited pressure but credit too United who were just too strong. Another side that was overcome by superior football and play but also superior fitness levels. We simply overpowered them.

They had nothing to play for I suppose and did show some decent patches of play but second half looked a team that was maybe thinking of the beach. Hope MK Dons fold in the same in a few weeks. Overall though to finish just below half way is a great season. Wilder laid out the foundations of course and I felt Page was harshly treated as they had one ok until a poor run. Edinburgh was another harshly treated at Gillingham I felt after doing a great job and sure he will do fine there. Key for them is to make sure they consolidate at this level and do not get sucked into a relegation scrap. Not sure they will have enough resources to mount a play -off campaign and they so have a fair few experienced/older players that will not really improve.

Fair play to them for the way they handled the Wilder exit last summer and how they greeted him and Knill, both at Bramall Lane and at the Sixfields. They showed a lot of class and the video the chairman posted this week was really good too.

Opponent man of the match : The keeper Smith made some good saves but I was quite impressed by O’Toole. He was busy, got about the pitch and decent on the ball. Also, thought he was ok at the Lane but he has become a bit of a journeyman but has found a home seemingly. Richards of course scored a really good goal and was lively. Glad Revell did not start as he is a big lad and a handful but did little when he came on. The lad at the back Diamond had a good game and won a lot of clearances/headers. I also thought the right back Moloney was decent too and better than the lad we were supposedly looking at, Buchanan. Anderson was a threat at the Lane but did not do much today.

Opponent Weak link : I thought that Taylor was really wasteful with the ball today. Every time they got a free kick I was worried that he might do something but he was awful on his delivery today. I also thought Nyatanga was poor. He is another that has played for lots of clubs and although has some good games, is woefully inconsistent and is a bit McEveley in that regard.

SUFC (brief) Player Ratings –

Moore 7/10 – Made a few decent saves first half and had no chance with the goal. Nothing to do second half really. Exerted himself more spraying champagne as he came off the bus at the Lane!

Freeman 7/10 – Not quite as involved as he has been and from an attacking sense did not see too much of him first half. He did come on more second half and had a few good runs and opportunities to get into the box.

Lafferty 5.5/10 – Our poorest player sadly. Got beat three times for skill, pace and strength down their right-hand side and his crossing was poor again going forward. He also gave the ball away a lot. Been a vital part of the side this season and underrated in some ways but feel we may have to upgrade this position over the summer but that debate is for another day.

Basham 8/10 – Another great performance where he carried the fight all game. Started in defence and then ended up more advanced most of the second half. Just kept going forward, won headers and tackles again and drove at the opponents. Used it sensibly too and he has kept possession so much better in recent times. I have criticised him a lot during his spell at SUFC but he has been a colossus since Xmas and deserves so much credit. Handy lad to have around.

O’Connell 7.5/10- Another solid performance. Won headers, tackles and came onto the ball. Him and Basham have very consistent in recent weeks and not only defended well but brought the ball out too getting us going the other way. Got better and better as the season has gone on and now an established first team starter.

Wright 7/10 – Continues his winning touch. Today he actually let the ball bounce a few times first half but he still was ok most of the game. He is just really steady. Lacks pace but reads the game and without being flashy just defends sensibly. He noticeably was pushing United further out as the game went on and especially second half.

Fleck 8/10 – First half thought he was poor again and gave it away quite a lot but he then came on and started to get on the ball. Made the first goal was a clever ball and got in the box a lot more than he has done this season and he had a chance even before he did score. Took the goal very well when it could have been easy to panic. Another that has been so consistent this season. A great signing. Wins tackles, gets stuck in, full of energy and good on the ball. Now scoring goals which was the one thing I felt he could improve. Got the lot really.

Coutts 7.5/10 – He too was a bit mixed but got stronger as the game went on which was the opposite last season. He kept it nice and simple and actually did some of the defensive things well too. Helped us completely control the ball second half as they could not get into it. Good to see him captain the team first half and shows his complete resurgence. Needs to maintain it and even try and improve as he and Fleck will almost certainly be starters next season.

Carruthers 6/10 – He started ok and hit the bar and also had a few other runs but also lost it a few times and started to fade and defensively you saw his weaknesses as he let his man go a few times. Felt him or O’Shea could come off at half time and he got the hook but this was more about us being positive than him being awful. He does need to get much fitter and maybe shed half a stone. Clearly a talent on the ball and shown real glimpses but not enough consistency to start for 90 minutes with performances of those who have got us there.

O’Shea 6/10 – Did not really get into the game that much. He did have one shot wide when well-placed and a few other bits of link up when we started the game well but he did fade after that. Second half he was taken off soon after the restart. Been a useful lad to have around and scored a few goals but not sure he is at level of the ones who have started most of the season and not sure we will sign him especially going up a level.

Clarke 7/10 – First half his touch was poor and it came off quite a bit and he seemed a bit headless chicken but after the break with Sharp on and then Hanson we had other bodies to occupy the defence and he started to get on it and cause problems. Took his goal really well. Missed a decent chance from a header. He has done well since coming back into the team. Bit of a surprise he is back involved but after all the criticism he got earlier in the season (some deserved maybe, some not) he has come in and played a big role and got two important goals.

Subs

Sharp 8/10 – May seem a little high for one half but I felt he came on and helped completely change the game. He got on the ball, drew free kicks, linked well and had 2 or 3 other chances at goal. Made the winner and just generally sparked a better performance with the whole attitude and desire changed. We upped the tempo and looked determined to push them back and he was fighting for loose balls even in midfield. Hopefully, he can get a few more goals now we are up. You could see what he meant to him on the pitch after the game and also back in the car park with some emotional and heartfelt words as he celebrated. Great to see him signing his own song and showed what he has done for the teamwork and unity when they all celebrated near the bus. He was determined each player got their credit and when chants came up pushed like of Coutts and Lavery forward to the crowd.

Hanson 6.5/10 – Won a few headers as we pressed further up the field. Weird to see him, Clarke and Sharp all playing the last two games for long spells but Wilder has been determined to go for it. Defenders clearly worry about him and he is a very good header of the ball. You sense he may not be a regular next year but is a good option even at Championship level. The fact we have not lost since he signed should shut up some of his critics. Sure, he has only scored one but we have had a totally different dimension since he signed and surely it is no coincidence the form has remained good with him occupying defenders and space. Like with Duffy (in a different way) he occupies space and men and this pulls people about and gives space to others.

Ebanks Landell – Brought on at the end as we were 1-1 but I think at this stage regardless of making sure we did not do anything daft we continued to go for it! He has been a bit part player in recent times but let us not forget his form/cult status was a big factor earlier in the season as him and Moore gave us some real spine and power in the key area of defence where we have previously been a soft touch.

Manager – Wilder 9/10 (this is for today; 10/10 for the season) – He maybe got the team changes wrong but you could see his thinking and his bravery is admirable. Still he put Sharp on and Hanson came on too. We slowly turned around a patchy first half performance and then simply powered through Northampton. He has ensured the team has been prepared every week and deserves every single plaudit that come his way. Today would have been easily to settle for the draw or not be bothered as others were losing but he drove the side on and whatever he said half time changed things. This has happened a lot this season. His motivation and preparation makes this unit so hard to beat. We have become a side that wants to win and we also do it the right way, playing good football, trying to be positive and being committed in everything we do. We are more cohesive and better organised in pattern of play and set pieces, credit goes to Knill on that one who is a really unsung hero. We are so much fitter than we were before the lad Prestridge deserves huge credit too. Overall the management team have been simply incredible. To get us from where we were last season and the poor start to now is phenomenal. More on that in future weeks when I do the season review.

Ref – Mark Heywood. Fine and one of the better ones I have seen. Barely noticed him which is a good sign. He did his best to keep it flowing and the bookings to Lafferty and Fleck (both had done fouls before). Fleck’s handball was not one on its own but he had brought someone down earlier that could have been a booking. Cannot recall many bad decisions all game. Even Edinburgh said it was onside when Clarke scored when I thought it might be close. He tried to make sure the fans got off the pitch and not make it bigger than it was really. Same at the end and I felt he just reffed it really sensibly.

Crowd/Day out – Cannot comment on the crowd at Sixfield as I was at the beam back so my report may lack some accuracy as I have said. At the beam back it is always a bit surreal. Was a good atmosphere and the pitch invasion was odd at the end as there was no one to celebrate with! It all seemed good natured although maybe caught the stewards by surprise. Also felt some seemed to come just for a day out and seemed more bothered about drinking and eating than watching the game. Some had no idea we were losing at half time when I went down to the concourse as they were more bothered about a beer or chips. I always find it strange that fans are so obsessed with getting their fix of beer or food in the ground. Sure, I love a drink before and after but I am in a ground to watch the game (or viewing as it was today). A load missed long periods just standing in queues. Surely, they can wait an hour and a half without a drink or eating and then do it afterwards? Maybe not. My main aim is to see what is going on. I suppose today was a bit of a party atmosphere and a bit different but having paid for something I kind of want to see it. Anyway, rant over, back to the day, afterwards we went for a few beers in the Beer Engine and then I went to a BBQ and had a few more cold ones. I considered going back to the Lane for the return of the bus but lad was very tired and with 4 more games to come I knew we’d see them all again – However, when I saw the celebrations ad videos I kind of wished I had gone down. Loved some of the videos of the players and Wilder celebrating.

So that is it. 6 years of writing about a lot of depressing rubbish (actually started doing these reports around year 2000 – so been 17 years really!) and finally I can write about a promotion sealing game. Only the second one I have written about in that period!

I am off to Vale on Friday so will bring you a report (probably Saturday as will not get back till late) and from the other games.

Up the Blades!!!

Agree with most of that, but I think you've been extremely harsh on Lafferty. Perhaps I didn't notice him so much first half as he was on the far side from me, but second half I thought he was really decent.

Formation we went with actually seemed to have O'Shea and Carruthers both in advanced midfield roles – it was rightly ditched. Carruthers continues to be a bit confusing – at times (off the bench) he's looked superb, but yesterday he combined that excellent effort early on with a number of really basic errors.

On their goal, the Northampton fans around me had actually been screaming at the ref to stop the game for their injured player, as we continued attacking and nearly scored. They then broke away, and didn't kick the ball out for their player to be treated (which I suspect some of our more advanced players had expected) but instead broke for Richards to score. Needless to say the player did not require any treatment.

I was watching at BDTBL as well, first half was frustrating and we were being bullied and pushed off the ball. The introduction of Sharp and Hanson changed all that.

Port Vale will be fun on Friday now.

Still can't believe we are promoted with four games still to play, that never happens to SUFC, well, not until Chris Wilder and Alan Knill put together this team of heroes.

Clarke gets a 7 .
Billy an 8.
Clarke got an excellent goal and it was not his fault the team did not pick up his knockdowns first half. Team is still slow and hesitant too often. Not Clarke's fault if a crap ball played in at angle can only be nodded to an opponent cos no team mate in the box.

These next 4 matches seem a bit unreal, like the season has just ended. Thankfully we can still focus on winning the league.

I agree. Can enjoy it but still got more glory to come.

Always like reading your reports

Took me a but to post because everything i meant to do gone by way side apparently promotion scrambles the brain l. I thought pre match Sharp, Hanson & Duffy on the bench was extremely Brave for game that "should" seal promotion. Probably still not wrong decision as we were poor 1st half sharp may had same limited opportunities. Clarke had a shocker 1st every error just to involve him. But he repaid that later & we can put the 1st half down to nerves thats hit every sportsman at some point. Because everyone subconsciously trying too hard & playing tense even greats have had to crawl over the finish line at some point

We were shit, dire and gash first half. We must have been because we were one down. It's rather odd that we are never just below the very high standards we have set this season. Always brilliant or dire, gash and shite.

Funny old game, this Bladeyness.

Last Wednesday v Coventry City despite the kick off being delayed to 8-00 pm the number of 'fans' that left there seats for their half time refreshments at 8-30 pm was astounding ! Never ceases to amaze me the number of people that perhaps see on seventy minutes of the game because the can't miss out on their pie and pint !

Fiery. Just the same as the supporters who have to leave a match with 10 - 15 minutes to go. The 23 bus or what ever must have the best seats as to leave so early. Always applaud the team off, even the Southend and Walsall games, Even Shrewsbury last season. Lets see how many go early for the Bradford and Chesterfield games.
