Unusual favourite player

Loved Jan Aage but he is hardly unusual. Couple of other 'strange' favourites of mine in the red and white:

Chris Short - shame he got injured. Had a great understanding with Mitch Ward and was an attacking overlapping right back before they were fashionable.

George Donis - the forgotten Greek but my god did he have a box of tricks.

Scot Marshall. Lad we had on loan from Arsenal. Classiest centre half I had ever seen at the time. Shocked he never made it.

He used to be called John Marcelo, due to the reporting system back in the 90s being unable to handle a player with a single name, and he had to be given a first name as well, and someone at the star gave him the name John Marcelo.
 



Mike Trusson
Was shite when he played in midfield but a revelation when played at centre half or centre forward, always gave a 100% and couldn't half head a ball.
 
Bobby Ford - good footballer, decent passer of the ball, worked hard. Was disliked by a lot of fans cus he didn't get "stuck in" and because Warnock liked him. Strange how a lot of fans disliked players Warnock liked.

John Gannon - similar to the above really. Reason I like him was his goal away at forest - my first ever away game.

Obviously my namesake - Vas Borbokis. Not really an unusual favorite seeing as he had so much ability.

Andy Walker - loved him for some reason. Wasn't with us for long, but had a very good goal scoring record for us and was a quality penalty area striker.

Another one I liked at the time was Owen Morrison - thought he did well towards the end of his loan spell and was a bit disappointed when we didn't go and sign him. Turns out he never did much after leaving us.
 
Santos! I don't really remember why, maybe for the chant, maybe because his name became a greeting on whichever board was popular at the time (SUISA?).

But big Tri Dellas too.

Article about Mike. When he broke into the team in the promotion season looked like the midfielder we needed who ran with the ball from midfield and played the ball on the ground. He had a great game in cup game vs Bournemouth but broke is leg at Ipswich just as he had broken into the first team.
He never looked the same player despite the purple patch of wonder strikes.

Yes I remember that Bournemouth game and was really excited. He just did well to come back at all but his overall game was never the same it's true. Poor family didn't his brother have awful luck too at city?
 
David Barnes? Quality left back on his day. Remember he played for aldershot against us near the end of the promotion season and was the best player out there and clearly Bassett liked what he saw. That game was the lowest away attendance I'd ever seen. Think I counted 6 in the seats and 20 standing.

Sanford benefited from the move to a back three, to put it kindly, he'd previously looked shit at left back but the move to a left sided centre half was when he really came into his own.

Nicky Marker was one I always liked too.

I was just going to say Nicky Marker, a real no frills Steady Eddie. Another for me was Steve Foley, a trier.

Great shout, add Mitch Ward to that list.

Another player I liked from that era was Mark Patterson, ran his socks off. Don Hutchinson was also very good during his short time with us.
 
No-one mentioned Paul Ifill yet? For me one of the most important players in our promotion season, contributing a load of goals and assists, but for some reason maligned by many of our fans.
 



Paul Rogers- Not sure why. I was a young kid and just liked him. Probably because I could always identify him on the pitch because of his bright blonde hair and seemingly everpresent black eye.

Yes a favourite of mine,on his debut in the Singing in the Rain game,had Gob shite Palmer In his pocket all night long,a real box to box midfielder,actually took a pay drop to play for United,he was some big wheeler dealer stockbroker person

For some reason,I think Rogers and always think of the Jade away shirt,no idea why
 
Far, far from my favourite player, but I've always been sympathetic towards George Long.

Aside from being a decent shot stopper (sometimes), I don't think he's actually that good and I definitely don't want to see him in the team, but the abuse I've seen him take at away games is hideous. Gillingham last year stands out in particular. A bunch of fans a few feet behind him just spent the first half screaming the worst abuse they could conjure, including literally wishing diseases on him. I'm completely convinced that they were responsible for the second goal we conceded (which he embarrassingly spilled from a corner, I think).

Whatever his attributes as a keeper, for a 21 year old guy I thought he dealt with the whole thing with remarkable integrity. Something those fans will never understand.

To me losing your shit and having a tantrum at a football game is just an act of cowardice. Especially if you're more than happy to merrily cheer along when things are rosy.

I read that he'd given up a lucrative job in the City to become a footballer. I remember seeing a photo of him (matchday programme?) posing with a mobile phone to his ear - great big phone the size of a brick with a breadstick of an antenna on it (I exaggerate probably :)).
 
Bit strange but Lee Williamson, of all people.

I even really liked Chris Porter, but I think that was mostly ironic and quite affected by his ability to score in a couple of important games.

That was the QPR away game March 2001. The game where my nomination, Shaun Murphy, had a developing Peter Crouch right in his back pocket. Crouch, for all his dexterity, didn't win fucking anything that afternoon.

Difficult to choose between Beesley, S Murphy, Maguire and Morgs as our best centre backs in the last 20 years. All of them were 'in charge'.

In a team that boasted Currie & Woodward mine was Ted Hemsley.......I think that as a nipper it was important that a Utd player shared the same name.....although at the time (when he was a supporter) my elder brother's favourite was Geoff Salmons despite he himself not being called Geoff.
 
Jeff Bourne. Not sure who it was against, but he scored the first goal I "witnessed" at Bramall Lane. I remember sitting in the south stand with my dad, on wooden seats, surrounded by blokes shouting various things :). Then we scored and it went mental, I remember thinking Fuckin' Hell!!! :eek:, not literally as I was only diddy but you know what I mean.

Just remember him with blades shirt out of his shorts, number 10 on the back longish blonde hair getting congratulated by the rest of the players.

I was hooked, thanks Dad, Granddad and Great Granddad. :D
