Now I know he hasn't cost a club record fee, nor scored a wondergoal at the Sty, nor does he wear his hair in fetchingly manicured dreadlocks. But it'd be nice if James Hanson chipped in & scored a goal or two here & there. You know, like strikers are meant to do...

Seems that he's working his bollocks off for the team though. You know the one...
the team thats clear top of the league
with a striker on 26 goals
a wing back on 10

Posted on another thread that when the euphoria is stripped away,if Sharp had been injured this season we'd be in a very different situation. Freeman has done/is doing what a second striker should be doing. Only Lavery looks the part and hopefully Wilder who will see this and will bin Clarke,McNulty and Done and bring in one good striker who can weigh in next season.

I thought following football on Ceefax was a thing of the past.

Not been prolific is an understatement... but the run is impressive- not quite in the Wright unbeaten category yet but who would have predicted that ..?

As would any other team who lost a key striker. Look at what's happened to Carlisle since Wyke left.

We will be in the market for at least two strikers in the summer. Worry about that after the season is done :)

Controversy for the sake of controversy? I can stick Durham and Gough on Talksport in just over an hour if I want my fill of contrived nonsense.

Who's the key striker we've lost? Don't say Lavery,he hardly started any games. The Lavery comment is mine,as in I rate him as potentially our best.

Yeah and if i had wings i'd be able to fly....

I get the argument, but its not really got any basis, because if Sharp got injured, we'd have played someone else in that position and yes it would be different. Those 26 goals might've been shared between 4-5 players, those penalty misses might've been penalties scored, those dives in the area might've been strikes on goal, that lack of pace might've been pace to get on the end of through balls... But as it is, we've had a prolific goal scorer.

In an ideal world we'd have more strikers with more goals between them...But there isn't much wrong with the way the season has panned out so far.

Doing a job for the team in a much more effective way than Clarke was IMO. Unbeaten with him in team since his arrival, Shipperleyesque contribution but with assists. Very good team player at this level and not spearheading attack as he would probably want to be, or in a way which would probably suit his own game more.

Totally disagree.

The target is to help the team win matches NOT score goals.

Emile Heskey scored 7 in 62 for England
And he scored 39 in 150 for Liverpool.

Quite a poor scoring record but he was deemed a success because his presence on the pitch
helped his strike partners become prolific.

The home match against Fleetwood highlighted how poor we were at set pieces and how we lacked physicality. Up to that game we were the exact opposite in style to Bolton. Teams had worked out that if they sit deep and defend in numbers then we would struggle to break them down.

Now we have Hanson that weakness has disappeared. If teams sit deep then we lump it into the box, Hanson causes havoc and Sharp is there to benefit from the knock downs. I've noticed at set pieces Hanson has 2 defenders marking him. So one could argue that the main reason why O'Connell scored his header last night was because Hanson was taking their best defenders with him leaving OConnell being marked by a weaker defender. Hence Hanson helped us score the first goal.

Don't get me wrong I think Hanson is limited, he's a more mobile Wayne Allison.
He will probably struggle in many matches in the Championship BUT he's a great tactical option for any manager. In some game (even in the Championship) Hanson will still be effective and help the team.

Wow...we really are bored aren't we? Endless threads about all the permutations of getting promoted, chants, and now turning on our own players.

Bore off.

Does it matter who scores? I always thought football was a team game. The team we follow are the top scorers in the country! That would suggest that scoring goals isn't a major issue:rolleyes:

Maybe, just maybe, the presence of Hanson makes room for others? Maybe the team are benefitting from his work-rate, commitment and ability to make it awkward for opposing defenders?

Didnt we have a long Hanson debate a week or so ago! He was fantastic at oldham and kept both their centre halves busy! And before anyone says he didn't score he did assist the only goal of the game. Last night he was in our area with 4 minutes to go helping defend the millwall hoof! Billy hasnt scored in 4 games btw. leave off a winning team playing good football ffs!

We were missing a target for goal kicks, long throws, and such. We've sometimes struggled or lacked options without the ability to at least occasionally go long.

Hanson isn't part of the wonderful passing football we play. Hanson probably isn't good enough for the Championship. However, year after year we've failed to make the necessary signings to fill out the gaps in our side and just get us over the line where we want to be.

Sorry, we needed someone of Hanson's type and there weren't a whole lot of those that also score a shed load of goals available for a reasonable price in January. So we've signed one who'll do enough to get us up, and the results are pretty damn hard to argue with.

Actually, the comparison's apt because that's how I felt about Akinbiyi. Except Akinbiyi cost a lot more and for some reason we spewed money on Horsfield at the same time.

This page has him down as 4 assists and 1 goal in 9 games - http://www.espnfc.co.uk/player/137688/james-hanson

Wimbledon, Peterborough, Rochdale & Oldham

John Fleck is the assists leader in the division on 13.

If Hanson has 4 in 9 games that would equate to ~20 assists over a 46 game season.

He's contributing in the same way that Matt Done's contributed to a stellar season - i.e. significantly, but without scoring.

No problem, we're doing great. And we're comfortably top scorers in the division.

Hanson's played a part, just like Akinbiyi did back then. But I'd imagine he'll last here about as long. Unless he remembers how to score goals.

Having read every post on this thread no-ones turned on anyone, and if you genuinely think constructive criticism is inapropriate irrespective of where the team is in the league then that team will never be as good as it can be. I assure you Chelsea fans will be giving views on how they could be better. The moment you cease striving for perfection is the moment you're fucked.

Things might have been different if Billy Sharp had been injured. Same for Chelsea with Diego Costa or Spurs without Kane etc. Most top 2-3 teams have one star striker who scores 20-25+ goals. It's pretty rare that the goals are all spread out throughout the team. I guess that's just the luck part of football.

As has been mentioned, Hanson's primary job (as a target man) isn't to be scoring every game but yeah, he might have been expected to score a couple more than just the 1.

He basically seems to be a pretty useful target man who doesn't score as much as is expected. That's fine for us because we have a pretty useful right back who scores more than is expected. When he's in the right positions Freeman's goalscoring ability isn't just repetitive good-fortune. In one of his first games for us (I think), a friendly against Newcastle, he scored a belter with great technique.

If the opportunity arises to sign somebody who is similar to Hanson and chips in with a few more goals, then great. Until then I'm pretty happy with him.

Have you literally just null & voided your own thread?
