Still bemused my the signing at the time. We needed a big man, true, but why go for Hanson? There were plenty of options that are younger and would offer us the same qualities, e.g Wyke and Elliot.

Being from Bradford, I knew exactly what he offered. He's a big lump that can occupy defenders in the air and that's about it. He filled a gap that was in the squad but I'm very disappointed we didn't opt for someone else with potential to grow with the club. Charlie Wyke is the biggest missed opportunity for this, can't believe we went for Hanson over him!

Either way, he's here now, but he should be used to his strengths. In my opinion, that is the last 15/20 mins when we are either chasing or defending a game. Definitely shouldn't be starting for me, just look at the first half Tuesday compared to first half yesterday, we are a different team when he plays. Don't mind him as a plan B, but I don't like him starting.

It's all about opportunity cost. We are a good side with Hanson in the XI, but are we even better when Lavery starts? IMO, yes we are. He suits the dynamic style a lot more and provides movement that Hanson isn't capable of. I'm ok with Hanson being in the squad until May but I really hope to God he's nowhere near the starting XI come September!
Got to admit it looks like Bradford got the best out of the deal Wyke is on 6 out of 10 since replacing Hanson, like you say he will be no good in the Championship

What he IS supposed to do is get the ball to stick, and bring his teammates in to the game. Being honest, this rarely happens. Possession turnover when he is involved in play is high. This is not good enough. His ability in the air, which I originally believed was his biggest strength, is also no where near good enough for a man his size. Jumps FAR too early. Needs to work on this.

And I tire of listening to the numptys who clap and cheer every time he wins a header that goes straight to an opponent !!

Sitters, you FULLY intend closing debate down by posting none debatable comments like pathetic, bonkers and tripe.

If you don't want to be civil to a fellow Blade who just happens to hold a differing opinion, then what's the point in debating in the first place. I seem to recall both you and I agreeing on Baxter being poor, where as others defended him. Tell me the difference?

Really surprised you haven't "called out" stretch for daring to give the "limited" Hanson 3 out of 10 yesterday - or dronnieblade for suggesting the unthinkable about Hanson.

You will run out of posters to debate with..............

UTB - as always
Im here all week ,debate on. Even if your opinion is bobbins. Think you will find Mr C Wilder has the same opinion as me as he picks James week in week out and we carry on winning, but hey go for it ,Hansons shit maybe we would be top of the league if we didn't play him

When we signed Hanson our manager said every other manager in this division would want him in their team.

Quality target man who has done the business against big teams in important matches for Bradford. Would frighten premier League defenders to distraction and probably Championship defenders more so than L1 defenders too.

He's a 1 goal in 4 games sort of striker who plays from the start of games when the battle is hardest, rather in the last 20 mins as sub.

At Bradford he walked off the pitch arm in arm with Wright. I wondered if there was a connection and yes they've grown up together. Also, Wright, Wilder and Knill and Mitchell know a good centre forward when they see one.

Football is a team game. We never won a sausage with the likes of Beattie flattering to deceive, something Hanson does in polar opposites.

Without wishing to raise the debate to too much of an academic level, I've been reading a book called The Undoing Project by Michael Lewis - who wrote Moneyball amongst other things. The really interesting thing is that basically we all see things that validate our initial assumptions and prejudices. In Moneyball it is shown how this has a huge effect on recruitment in baseball, and how purely using good quality player stats is much more effective than just scouts' opinions.

This current book is about the two Israeli psychologists who identified this tendency, and eventually applied it to economics and created the study of behavioural economics. They won a Nobel prize for this. It basically says that none of us are capable of making truly rational decisions, even though we think we are.

I have been battling with this same thing, because while almost everybody on the forum has a really high opinion of Duffy - I have never rated him highly, because I see him to be weak on the ball and losing the ball too often in dangerous areas. I still get this impression in my inevitable emotional beer-fuelled state when I am watching the game - but if I go through a match video afterwards I can force myself to acknowledge the positive things that he does - like the ball for JOC's goal yesterday. So the fact that I like strong physical players, like Fleck, JOC and Hanson, means that I get an artificially high opinion of their overall play and vice versa. So my opinion on Hanson yesterday was that he won almost everything in the air and that those around him are not yet playing close enough to him to pick up the seconds. I'm not saying that this is a valid point of view - just that it is the one that my prejudices create.

So, as Rod on Bladesmad says it really is "all abart opinions".

Mind you Mick McCarthy said opinions are like arses - we've all got them but it's better to keep them to yourself!

I guess that's why forums are anonymous.

Best post on the thread. Have a like sir.

Just doesn't suit the style. Nor does Clarke. We will need (much) better next term.

Well said. Whilst I agree with sitwell about Hanson, there is a way to debate rather than try to dominate.

No point fella - just put the rose tinted glasses on, they suit you.

So given it's a team game, how many points and how many games have they lost with Wyke in the team compared with us with Hanson in the side?
(PS Lafferty wouldn't have had a free header for the 2nd goal yesterday if it wasn't for Hansons movement off the ball)

A mention for Clarke. Quality player who has not got going for us as yet. Easily has the ability to play in the Championship next season. Skill, guile, strength and ego all in one, plus a need to be loved I sense.

I think he'll be one of the first to leave in the summer personally.

They have lost one away at Fleetwood had away draws at Bristol R and Bolton so not too shabby in fact just the same form as us in the last six games, your point was ?

As Bergen Blade pointed out on another thread he took both the centre half and full back away from Lafferty for the second goal.

He does plenty of work both in defence and attack, and I think the choice between him and Lavery largely depends on the type of opposition we're playing against and how much height we need to combat them. Without him yesterday I feel both their CB's would have been largely untested by the high ball, and consequently would have had more energy to try and deal with Billy running the line so well.

For games still to come such as Millwall who have big centre halves and forwards like Gregory and Morison I feel he'll be an absolute necessity.
This!

Aguero and Kane he ain't.. But is he good enough to play a part to help get us out of this Division then I say yes he is.

We wanted a January boost to give us wider options up front and we've become the top scorers and goals come from all over.

How many of us would have been whingeing about firepower, strength and battles in the air if we hadn't signed him?. Clarke isn't doing the job we signed him for and in this Division, as we learnt last year with our micro team, you need some beef around.

He won't be with us when we are in Europe but he will be very fondly remembered for contribution, as a team player in getting us there.

Well done James Hanson.

Wilder likes him.
I wouldn't be so sure on that.

Done has been dropped for what will mostly be poor overall goal input.

Clarke has not shown he is any where near good enough for this side. Hanson. IMHO and only that, likewise. Neither match up well with Sharp. Something HAS to give as we won't be steamrollering teams next season.

A quality striker (£1m +) will be crucial. Neither Hanson or Clarke tick this particular box and have been recruited on the cheap for L1.

So they have lost one more than us with him in the side. How many more points have they taken?

(And if you want to look at last 6 matches we have scored 50% more goals than Bradford)

What's the ' better ' option ? Height , pace , power , good in the air and the floor and scores a lot of goals ?

I think we'll need to form an ordely queue for that one .

Someone who can trap a football would be a good start :(

Is that why Sharp was player of the month for the division ,playing alongside Hanson last month ?
