Fantastic movement from Freeman. You can see him early in the clip holding his position on the right side in his own half, then as the ball gets played to O'Connell out wide, he's in the middle but still way outside the area. Then he times his run to the near post to perfection.

I imagine he's always had it in him. Even when he was in and out of the side, he scored 1 or 2, and now he's playing consistently and given licence to get forward, we're seeing the player he is.

I remember him playing a couple of games in a more right sided midfield role during Clough's tenure and thinking that he looked more comfortable there than at right back.

Agree ,he always wanted to get forward ,as well as being a good finisher he is a good dribbler ,which he showed a few times under Clough but any flair disappeared under Adkins ,like several other players.

Just had a look on wiki, to see if there was any precedent for his goalscoring exploits this season (& there was a spell at Mansfield very early in his career when he hit 3 in 9) & saw a quote from from Keith Curle, who was his manager when on loan at Notts County. He said he reckoned Freeman would be good enough to play in the Premier League in the future.

Wilder is one of Bassett's boys; he won't make wholesale changes, and won't need to. This squad is largely future-proof and will be successful in the Championship. Bassett stuck with the bulk of his squad to gain back-to-back promotions. To those Blades fans who whittle about our defensive frailties and say we'll need a new defence for next season - we conceded 54 goals in that 1988/89 promotion season; so far we've conceded 42, so probably won't be that much different by the end of this season. You can only judge football players and teams in their own time zone of course but this squad is considerably slicker on the ball than Bassett's team, and I think this squad is stronger. We may or may not be over-reliant on Billy's goals, but Bassett was very fortunate to have Deane and Agana to play his style of football.

I think it's fairly laughable to exclude the board from any credit whatsoever based on Wilder saying the transfer budget has been reduced and that alone. I suspect that a board's involvement is somewhat more multifaceted in a football club (like any other business) than purely setting a transfer budget. None of us know what it was or is, but volume and calibre of deals has been as good as I've ever known.

The new MD and Head of Recruitment look very shrewd appointments. Off the pitch the prices have remained reasonable, Academy recruitment seems to have been successful, the corporate hosp side of things at SUFC has been good. Marketing seems to be improving.

The whole place is buzzing at the moment and credit is deserved from top to bottom.

Just returning to the OP and the celebration of passing football, in my enthusiasm for JOC and Fleck I forgot to mention Lavery's exceptional control and turn that left his marker for dead and gave him those precious moments to turn, move away, and look up to see who would be available to receive a pass. I've looked at Lavery's control several times and I can't compliment the guy enough, it's top quality skill that shows how to shake off a defender and in turn make a goal scoring chance possible. If that's an example of what we have to come from Lavery, bring it on. UTMB

Absolute spot on there about Lavery. That piece of skill was crucial to our scoring that goal. Without it we could have ended up with just a corner.

I was calling for him to start that game ahead of Hanson and was disappointed when he was dropped after setting up both goals v Gillingham.


Edwards was fairly critical of him on the radio but he chalked up another goal and assist. To say he’s not had a run of games, his contribution this season has been significant.

Last season, we had too many ingredients that didn’t compliment each other and a baker who wasn’t up to the task of moulding those ingredients into anything better than a dry, stale, dubious tasting cake. So we got rid of most of those ingredients, brought in a fantastic baker and enabled him to identify and procure the ingredients he thought necessary to bake a delicious cake albeit at a lesser total cost than last years’ stale cake.


I would say the board deserve a little credit for


a) getting the managerial appointment right for once and

b) providing a budget and the freedom for Wilder to build this magnificent team.


The budget isn’t what it was but it was enough to get the job done as Wilder has shown and would probably still require some financial input from the owners even taking into account the sales of our promising youngsters.


That said, Wilder deserves far more credit for assembling a team that’s dominating the league with a net surplus of around £2million or more on player trading. That is an incredible achievement.

I'd replace cake with bread. Supermarkets fill their bread with additives to make them last longer and look pretty. What bread needs, as a minimum, is flour, water and salt (yeast optional). Take the additives away, take your time and care about the ingredients, and you have the most amazing bread you'll taste.
