View From Oxford

Firstly I'd like to echo some of the other fans on our forum and say I thought you lot were fantastic. First half seemed pretty even, but the second half was the best away performance I've seen for a while and you certainly look like a championship team already. I was quite surprised that we had more possession and shots on goal as that didn't seem the case!

With regards to Wilder and why there's a bit of love lost, he was fantastic when he first arrived and got us out of the dreaded conference playing good football and that carried on into League 2 for the first season back. We seemed to have a brilliant away record under CW, but the home form was not good for many seasons and the style of play was boring and predictable. He made some extremely poor signings too, some players who are the worst players ever to wear the yellow shirt. We used to go a goal up then he would set the team sit deep to grind the result out but it never worked (I was hoping for him to do it tonight!!!)

CW didn't take criticism too well and had a few run ins with fans, got a bit stroppy with the local media and dismissed the clubs better times (history) on a few occasions.

Since leaving us he's enjoyed good times, though it will be interesting how he's viewed when things aren't going so well. My own view is he's a good manager who done a good job at OUFC, but (strangely you may think) i believe Michael Appleton to be a better manager who will go on to big things.

Not the one connected to the stadium. It was the shitty overflow area behind gala bingo / bowling alley. It was gridlocked. I was right at the back. Seemed to be hundreds of cars sharing one exit all heading to the same road as the cars exiting the stadium car park.

Do you think the change in ownership may have helped Appleton take you further? I get the impression he's a better coach than manager and works best in a well run club.

And under the previous owners, how many managers did you have whilst in the conference before Wilder took you up?
 
Perhaps. The club wasn't poorly run during CW's tenure, for the majority of his 6 years Kelvin Thomas was running the club, who he subsequently joined at NTFC. I believe he resigned due to not being allowed to strengthen in January (this was after Kelvin had left the club)

I was a bit underwhelmed when Michael Appleton was given the job as what happened at Blackburn, Pompey and Blackpool did damage his reputation, but he runs the club like a Premiership outfit behind the scenes and has signed some great young hungry players. The owner now is probably the best we've ever had so I suppose that makes things easier for MA. Our stumbling point as a club is the Stadium, we have to pay extortionate rents for a half finished soulless dump we make no revenue on catering at the ground so the chairman is propping the club up. I read a few moans on here about the Hollywood Bowl, Car Park and restaurants etc, we all hate it too!!!

3 Jim Smith who almost got us in the first season down there, Darren Patterson who was a cheap option (already at the club) then Wilder.
 
Ah yes. That's where we park when we take the Crouchy twins to soft play. There's only one way out and it's past the main car park. I can see why it might take a while to get out but two hours is pretty grim.

The queue to the Oxford-bound dual carriageway was backed up to the car park. I had to go on the wrong way, toward Reading, then do a u-turn and go back into Oxford. It's a shite arrangement. Let's hope we don't have to go back.

What happened to the Pub by the ground ? I went to see you lot play Dagenham some time ago now ..... good crowd and great game finished 2-2 .... and remember having a few beers in the alehouse by the ground .

I must confess that im still a little bit non-plussed by the level of vitriol poured out from a lot of your fans in Wilders direction . I accept your explanation but i thought there was a far more insidious reason for the outpouring of abuse he recieved . We were warned by a Northampton fan on here when CW signed for us that you lot really had it in for him and when i saw what a lot of you thought of him i thought hed been shagging everything that moved down there !!

Anyway .... Oxford United are shit . Theres only one team in Oxford and that is C I T Y :D I used to watch them when they were playing in their old ground ...... great memories !

Another place owned by Kassam where he charged extortionate rates meaning it wasn't viable for anyone to run as a pub. Home fans have a few options of pubs in Blackbird Leys and nearby Littlemore, but it must be a crap away days for visiting fans.

It's only a minority I believe that are anti Wilder. It was always a love/hate thing with some and many were calling for his head long before he resigned.

Oxford City once had the dream team management duo of Bobby Moore & Harry Redknapp!! Going quite well recently in terms of their league standing but seriously in debt.

I've tried to explain to people on here that Tufty was no hero at Oxford long before he left for Northampton. I've also said that his football at your club was nothing like and nowhere near as good as the Tuftyball that exhilarated fans at Northampton and now at the Lane.

I was accused of making it up....

The band I used to manage once did a gig at a youth club in Blackbird Leys; can't say that I'm keen to return.

I know. I wish I hadn't spent all these years fighting the corner of proper football. If only we had old Muckanettles Nowt-Fancy in charge, we'd be Upanatem Underdogging ourselves all the way to the Conference. We could runaround aimlessly on the rubbish pitches that our naval correspondent reveres so much. Ah, well, that's a Bladey pipe dream I fear...

Tufty, I now accept, had a glittering 15 year managerial career before his move to Northampton. He sprinkled stardust across the football firmament everywhere he went. Oxford fans, all of them, worshipped his little bushy tail up to and including the day before his defection. My perception of his Oxford teams looking dull, uninspiring and prosaic as they were confortably beaten by some less than exhilarating Blades' teams was wholly wrong. They played like Barca in defeat.

When I reflect on the "orthodox", "sensible" views of my fellow contributors, I grow more and more content with ridiculous.

Hollywood Bowl is an utterly soulless place. But the cinema is nice and there's a half decent soft play centre** there. That's the best Oxford has to offer :)

Crouchy as a local you should know the burger van on the corner of the ground is by far the best option. You can also get a pint in their 'supporters club bar' about 50-100yds further round the ground.

However looking at most of our support around me nobody struggled to get pi55ed pre match !

We were in after the match for an hour walthy ,at the bar talking to a couple of Oxford fans ,they were really good blokes who follow the team everywhere and knew their football except for saying that Alan Knill picks our team not Wilder. Were you with the guy who was flying to South Africa today ?

We were right at the back of that car park ,stayed an hour in Frankie and Bennys , there were no cars left in the car park after an hour. Worse part was getting in , ,an hour at least to get in and there were coaches behind us ,missed the first 10 minutes ,where are the traffic cops ? No tickets to be handed out I suppose.

I think you had a different Chris Wilder to the one we have.

Our version is a little older, has learned his trade, and has settled on a method and style of play, and a way of dealing with players / media. Like rock bands, some players and managers flounder for a while, until they find whatever it is that opens the door, or a formula, or that rhythm that makes them really tick. We are lucky to have inherited Tufty at precisely that Hallelujah moment, give or take.

Only went in as we spent forever deciding which would be least crap, the queue for the chippy was too long, so plumped for the Indian as it looked a little less manic around the food than the Chinese. Was very poor though, with surprisingly many people around us having positive feedback. They never replaced the empty popular/nicer items in the entire time we were in and kept topping up the crap that no-one was eating. Figured I'd try and at least try and feel a little less ripped off by filling up on the least crap parts... but after biting into a very weird feeling and textured piece of chicken gave up :)

I also think they have a different Michael Appleton to the one I'm aware of.

The one I know got Portsmouth relegated from the Championship, lasted 11 games at Blackpool then less than 3months at Blackburn .

Shows what a collective shower of shite most of the teams are in this division if we are the best team they have played on that performance. Quite surprised to be honest!

Exactly my thoughts when they appointed him, but those 3 jobs were impossible.

He went into those jobs as a highly regarded coach having been involved at WBA and England but in reality all of them were car crash jobs. His reputation took a massive hit and he had to go lower down the pyramid to restart his career. He has completely turned OUFC around, seems to be a very good man manager and prepares for each game meticulously.

Despite struggling in his first season, trying to play a short passing game with the not very good squad he inherited he slowly built the team he wanted predominantly signing young players who were good technically and comfortable with a short passing, attacking game. That wasn't in evidence much last night as you didn't allow us to do so and we ended up hitting the channels far too often. If we can keep our best players and add a few more I'm sure we can challenge next season, I'm just happy to be in League One and performing well. It wasn't long ago we were playing league games against St Albans, Histon, Lewes and Farsley Celtic!!!


Off topic a bit but what was with the "Greedy" chants to Maguire about?
