"Of everything that Gary Madine has done all season, his team talk for the players, staff and fans of Sheffield United in time for Wanderers' trip to Bramhall Lane is up there as the best thing he's done all season - in true Madine nature, it didn't benefit Wanderers. When his career as a mediocre target man that can't hold the ball up ends, he could well find employment in motivational speaking.

Madine decided to celebrate scoring one of three clear headers in the 2-2 draw last weekend at Valley Parade in the only way he knows how: by getting absolutely bladdered in Sheffield. A Sheffield Wednesday fan, thrusting a camera phone in his face, asked him about his thoughts on United's 21 goal striker Billy Sharp. Madine, who has showcased a third of Sharp's firepower in League One this season, did his best to look into the camera, his eyelids no longer under his own control, and called Sharp a "fat, little pig". League One's top scorer. The captain of the side top of the league by 7 points. One week before we visit their ground. Tit.

Wednesday fans laughed. United fans were incensed. Wanderers fans rolled their eyes. We've seen it all before.

When news broke at 2pm on match day of Madine's omission from the squad, there was an outpouring of resignation from Wanderers fans in the Wetherspoon pub in the city centre. Sure, he's naff. But he's so central to the way Parky plays, and the pantomime villain role will have suited him down to the ground. It might have even focussed the energies of the Sheffield United fans and centre halves, who'd have wanted to knock seven shades out of him in equal measure.

Whether it be due to illness or club discipline, Madine didn't play. He was replaced by the abomination that is Conor Wilkinson. However, Wilkinson is only a minor factor in our defeat. We were awful all across the pitch. What didn't help is that The Blades were very, very good.

Billy Sharp was fantastic. He knew exactly how to play against the back three, playing within the gap between Wheater and Beevers. His celebration to the Wanderers fans when he put United 1-0 was great; note to Wanderers fans at this point - do not call the league's top scorer a fat bastard. He'll score.

Hanson dominated Derik in the air. Sharp's runs in behind the wing backs, largely Dean Moxey, were simple but consistently effective. Mark Duffy was everywhere in midfield, and a mixture of Paul Coutts and John Fleck kept James Henry and Josh Vela pinned in their own half. It wasn't mind blowing football, but it was energetic, threatening and good to watch.

The atmosphere from the home fans was impressive, too. A club that can attract 27,000 fans to their ground on a miserable February afternoon doesn't deserve to be in League One. Especially a fan base that has suffered three seasons of promotion disappointment in as many years. Any club that can belt out John Denver intermittently has got my approval.

The visit to Bramhall Lane was the first time this season that Wanderers have been outclassed. Sure, we've got injuries mounting up, and missing a striker that falls "ill" just before 2pm on a match day. However you've got to hold your hands up and accept when you've been soundly beaten. Chris Wilder's team have one hand on the trophy already, and I don't see another team coming anywhere close to challenging them come May. It certainly won't be us.

We need to accept that the best team comfortably won, and move on. There's a huge game coming up against Fleetwood (a sentence I never thought I'd say) that could put us right back on track for the second automatic promotion spot. I hope to the footballing gods that we don't put another shocking performance like that in at Highbury.

Come on you Whites."

I like how they focus on Sharp alone as if he was the difference between the two sides, when in reality they had one (poor) shot on target and were chasing shadows in the second half.

All the talk about how they're the best team in the league on paper... you don't play on paper. And they barely played on grass in the second half. It was a case of lump it up and hope to get the better of Big Bad Basham.

Couldn't agree more. Can't remember a such a shit team in the play offs thinking so much of themselves and thinking so little of the league leaders.

It is only a matter of time before this years loses of £11million a year whilst being £200 million in debt catches up with them.
As Portsmouth proved you need a good number of fans with a modicum of intelligence if you are to avoid extinction..

Fortunately their manager and these fans comments indicate oblivion.
Apart from the Pigs it couldn't happen to a more deserving set of cunts
Feck em.
All they've got to do is get mandaric in as owner, and with a wave of his hand, everyone they owe money too gets shafted.

Bolton won't make second place.

Furthermore they'll fail in the play-offs on that showing. Every team in that 3rd to 6th bracket has more about them than Bolton, who offered virtually fuck-all yesterday.

I would say that an extended period in the 3rd division for 6 years might be a decent antidote to their arrogant delusions, but will there even be a Bolton Wanderers in 6 years time?

Enjoyed reading every bit of that!

Seem a strange mix of fans at Bolton. Some accept the reality that they didn't play well, that we did and they haven't got a great team and a right to play in the Premiership or Championship.

Others seem to be complete morons who go around attacking people and not accepting they are a club now in the third tier of English football and other teams might be better and get bigger crowds.

I would have put this down to the younger fans who have seen a successful team, even if one living way beyond its means and the ramifications of which are about to hit which they can't accept, whilst older fans are more realistic, having seen their team here before, but the excellent video blog from the young lad dispelled that theory. Perhaps they just have a few decent fans of all ages and a lot of idiots. Both on the pitch, on the coaching staff and in the stands.

Cheers Roy your simply the best ( song there somewhere )

It's just laziness and a complete lack of understanding of the game when fans say "Billy Sharp was the difference"

Sharp hasnt improved from last season and we finished 11th. The players around him are the biggest difference as I'm sure Sharp himself would agree with. Would any of our sleepy eyed midfielders from last season been as dynamic and tenacious as Fleck yesterday? Would any of them show the skills Carruthurs did? Would Collins and McEverley have dealt with countless balls coming into the box?

Hammond would have dominated.

Was talking to a family pre match who were on their supporters trust who confirmed those figures, couldn't have hoped to meet a more balanced, sensible, intelligent group. If they've got plenty more like them they'll be ok.

I've had two great days out at Horwich this season despite the results.

On both occasions we were drinking in the Barnstormers for several hours before the game and enjoyed good ale and good conversation with Bolton fans.

I'm pretty sure that their fan base mirrors ours.

Generally good people but with some right knobs and as ever, the knobs make the most noise.

Just listened to Parkinson. What a mardy arse! OK it looks a bit of a dive, but Bolton were outclassed throughout, we looked by far the better team.
Also said Gary Madine was taken ill on arrival at BDTBL. Was it the case of "Gary Madine and the case of the Brown Stained Pants?"

Anything like this should just be posted in the View From thread.

Decent fair article though.

Except for the Bramhall Lane

I've never got "Bramhall"; nobody, not even Philistines, pronounce it that way. I can understand "Brammall", especially as that was actually the original spelling of the family who gave their name to the Lane (as in the road) itself, and I still pronounce it the same way as I did when I was at school, like we all did at Greystones and High Storrs: "Brammer Lane" - not out of ignorance of course but because of lazy south Sheffield dialect.

But "Bram-Hall Lane" - gi' oo'er yer posh Lancastrian dickwads (!).

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, just thought it was a decent read....................

Superbly written piece. Objective and honest in it's appraisal of both teams and the assessment of Madine's 'antics' is spot on. He basically gave us the extra 1%, not that we needed it anyway.

Loved the line ''Oh and a note to Wanderers supporters, do not call the league's top score a 'fat bastard' because he will score''

:D:D:D

More often than not, it were t'lane in S13, you hardly heard the first word mentioned.

one thing i dont understand is that everyone is saying that we'll just come straight back down. that may be the case, but it's not like we're going to have the exact same team next season. we're going to be bringing in more players, which will be the difference of staying up or not

I guess it's that old thing of "ah, you may be top of League 1, but that is lower than the bottom of the championship", or some such drivel.

And yes, people seem to forget we will strengthen.
