The big promotion game at the top of League One saw the shares spoiled in an entertaining game in front of nearly 28,000 at Bramall Lane. In truth, the home side dominated large periods of the game and in the first half were particularly dominant but a plucky Iron came away with a point. Indeed the visitors took the lead against the run of play thanks to Paddy Madden’s opportunistic strike but parity was restored almost instantly as the division’s leading scorer Billy Sharp scored a similar poachers effort. A red card for Harry Toffolo soon after gave the Blades over half an hour to get the winner but despite continuing to dominate the elusive goal eluded them. At the end Scunthorpe nearly won it with Madden crashing off the post before O’Shea curled an effort off the inside of the post soon after. It was end to end stuff at the death as both teams went for the winner. In the end the results ensured it was status quo at the top of the division.

United managed Chris Wilder opted to bring back his big guns after resting players in the week and back came Billy Sharp, Kieron Freeman, Mark Duffy and also James Hanson. Jay O’Shea, Matt Done, Caolan Lavery and Joe Riley were back on the bench joining Samir Carruthers and Ethan Ebanks Landell.

Scunthorpe went with a tried and trusted pairing up top with Paddy Madden partnering Kevin Van Veen with relative newcomers Craig Davies and Ivan Toney on the bench.

United started the game on the offensive and were pressing high up the field instantly. An early chance came when Lafferty got into the box and despite some contact opted to carry on as he evaded his man. His cross found Sharp who fired over. All the early possession was with the home side with Fleck biting into challenges and Basham and O’Connell dominating the ball when it came back. A great chance came when Sharp played in Duffy and well placed he shot wide. It was a really good chance. Toffolo was booked for a cynical foul on Freeman and then another poor challenge from Scunthorpe saw a foul on Sharp. They were struggling to stem the tide and were resorting to pull back and fouls.

United kept coming at Scunthorpe. Duffy and Coutts played some lovely pieces of play and both Freeman and Lafferty were getting on the ball. Scunthorpe seemed startled by the aggressive play on and off the ball and simply had no answer for wave after wave of United attack. One cross from the left saw Hanson get up and head downwards but Daniels tipped away at full length. It really was complete domination with a rare shot from Dawson well wide the only riposte from the visitors.

Both sets of players seemed confused by a referee who despite having premier league experience at times let things go but then became incredibly fussy. It seemed hard to know what he would do next although he booked Van Veen for another crude foul. O’Connell headed wide before Crookes clattered Wright; maybe the worst foul of the lot but somehow escaped censure.

Good work from Freeman saw the ball come in and Wallace flicked it away from the waiting Sharp. Then Hanson linked well but Duffy was crowded out. United won a series of free kicks but could not test Daniels again until a routine save just before the half time whistle from a flicked Hanson header.

The second half saw Scunthorpe come out with a renewed sense of purpose and got into the United third for more than a fleeting moment which had not happened first half. Poor play saw United fail to stop the ball going down the right and Dawson hit a low cross that got a slight deflection as United’s defence failed to mark up and MADDEN slotted home to lead to jubilant scenes behind the goal.

United were stunned but they came back instantly. Freeman was involved as he had been all afternoon and got down the right and crossed. Fleck and Hanson helped the ball back and it fell invitingly for SHARP to smash home from close range.

Soon after an action packed half had another twist as Freeman was badly baulked by Toffolo who had been booked already and committed a further two fouls. It was a blatant block off and an easy second yellow for Jones. Untied senses a big opportunity now. Fleck had two shots blocked and then a Freeman cross evaded everyone. Fleck had a better effort that whistled just over before Lafferty drilled wide. United were still in control and dominating the ball but were not creating clear cut chances. Duffy frustrated with his final ball twice and then Freeman played it too close to the keeper. Scunthorpe had a further two go into the referee’s book as he continued to make sure he knew everyone he was there!

Scunthorpe had been able to keep United to long range efforts so Wilder made changes with Lavery on for Hanson and then O’Shea for Lafferty.

Lavery had a chance blocked after neat work in the build up to bring down a difficult high ball. From the corner the ball ricocheted across goal and Sharp toe poked agonisingly wide.

Coutts and Duffy were both booked for United for tired tackles. Despite it being the home side pressing for the winner, Scunthorpe broke after a give-away and substitute Mantom got down the flank and squared but Madden thumped a close-range finish off the post. A huge let off for United in what would have been a crushing blow in game they had dominated.

Still the chances were not finished and a lovely flowing move saw Freeman, Lavery and Fleck combine to play in O’Shea. He hit a curling right foot shot that beat Daniels all end up and as the crowd held their breath the ball hit the inside of the post and bounced back into the hands of the relieved keeper.

The referee had deemed there would be an additional five minutes of stoppage time just before this chance but after this drama there were no other moments of note despite some comical defending from United in the corner that nearly gifted Scunthorpe another late chance the game ended with honours even.

United – A really good performance. We have played worse than that this season and won. The first half was superb with quick football at a great tempo and we were surging all over Scunthorpe. We crashed into tackles, won 50/50’s and turned it into possession quickly. We then were in attack mode and were zipping it about and creating half chances. It was total domination and Fleck and Coutts majestic in the middle and Freeman and Lafferty surging down the wings. The only thing missing was a poor final ball or poor final finish (Duffy missed a big chance/Sharp fired over). It was really good and Scunthorpe had no answer for our pressing and intensity of our play on and off the ball. We looked a league above.

Sadly, we could not score and you worried they would do better and so it proved. We came out sluggish and they got a scrappy goal thanks to a decent ball, that was deflected and some poor marking. However, we got level instantly and then after this the red card and you felt we would go and win. We had most of the second half too and so much of the ball but the energy and intensity was not at the same level. I felt the tempo oddly dropped after the red card and not helped by an incompetent refereeing display, the game became a bit disjointed. Not sure the subs helped but the away side were content to play on the break and threw bodies in the way. Our final ball was not good enough but we still had a few half chances and Sharp maybe ought to have scored. Right at the end a bizarre spell saw them come again and hit the post and our players started to make some poor decisions but we then had a great chance but O’Shea hit the post after a lovely move. It was odd right at the end as both teams were a little unsure to go for the attack or settle for what they had but still had these chances I mentioned.

In the end, United will feel this is a big opportunity missed but maybe should not be too down as Wilder said. They played really well and needed to make domination count first half but did not. Even after trailing they got level and saw the red card but they could not quite lift it to levels they had showed and Scunthorpe worked hard to restrict us space and things petered out quite a bit. Still a better final ball (just one) and we would have got the all-important winner. Of course, both teams were unlucky with chances at the end that hit the post.

The main worry is for all the great play we did not have tons of chances or make lots of chances. It was great up the final third and too much petered out. So, all the good play is kind of wasted at times. I might get criticised for that but too often this season, the final ball has been poor. I think Chapman could be a big player (back training) in the run in. We rely too much on Freeman getting down the right and too often we have to play the perfect pass. We have the big lad there. Get it in the box! We overplayed at times again today. When we did cross it, the final ball was poor on the main.

Overall, I suppose no ground lost (with Bolton drawing – although Fleetwood are on an incredible run and all 3 above them should be concerned as they are simply not losing) but you have a nagging feeling it is 2 point dropped. Bolton will have to come and win next week; as a point does them no real favours and they have a really hard run in (9 out of 15 away and some really hard ones). Next week we have to replicate that and ensure we are able to be more decisive with the final ball and with chances. Bolton will bring the same over zealous and physical approach as Sunny (maybe more) and hope we have a stronger and more competent referee. We need to just come again and ensure we repeat that. As frustrated as I am we did not win, we repeat that display most weeks and we will beat most teams. One slight concern is we still have not beat any of the top 6 home or away. Next week hopefully be it!

On that performance, we look a side that should win promotion. We basically made Scunthorpe look a very ordinary side. Sadly, it counted for nothing in the end but taking the emotion out, you have to sit back and on that evidence, we look far better bets for promotion.

Scunthorpe – I have to say there have been half a dozen better sides than them come to the Lane but United made them look poor. They were second best most of the game and fortunate to draw. Sure they got ahead and also hit the post but take away those moments it was one way traffic for long spells. First half not sure how they got in 0-0 as the whole game had been played in their half almost. Credit to them second half for having a go and getting a goal and even after the red card, they kept working and probably improved with ten men! They flung bodies in the way and defended well. They did not deserve a point having seen a game where they were second best in most areas but they did do well towards the end and may say they restricted United to too many clear cut chances despite the domination which is a fair point.

Overall though they looked a side that to me may struggle to keep the pace and I feel Bolton and Fleetwood may overtake them in the coming weeks. They lack pace all over the side (made us look quick) and sadly seemed quick to resort to kicking us every time we want past them. A stronger referee and they may have been reduced to even fewer men. They really were very cynical. Ability wide they were miles off us. Of course, they got a draw and will say for all our play, that we maybe did not hurt them enough and that they were away with ten men but if both teams replicate those types of performances for the remainder of the season, we will finish higher up the league and take more points. Indeed if we play that sort of game with the way the teams played and United would win maybe 8/10 and Scunthorpe might nick a draw 1/10 and an unlikely win 1/10.

What pleased me is that United just looked to have better players nearly all over the field and I am not sure Scunthorpe have the gears we do. They will win games and continue to battle to the end but I think they may end up in the playoffs. Hope I am right! Still Graham Alexander has done a great job – they have a bigger budget than most at this level (I heard it is not far off ours from all the talk about respective budgets and Wilder made this point in the week) and has took them on from good season last season. For them to be right at the top is a great achievement.

Opponent man of the match : I suppose Madden was the danger man and he scored one finding space at the back post and nearly got another. The rest of the wide worked hard but struggled to keep pace with United. The two centre backs worked manfully all game to try and stem the tide and the lad Dawson is lacking in ability but a trier (reminds me a bit of Basham).

Opponent Weak link : I thought Morris was awful and Freeman completely dominated him. He had a few set plays but they were poor too. I also thought the striker Van Veen who has been supposedly linked with a 4 million pound move to China was not really in the game. They may have done better with the pacey Toney or experienced Davies but that is easy to say on reflection.

SUFC Player Ratings –

Moore 7/10 – Little to do. No chance on the goal and saw another hit his right hand post. Other than this a few routine saves but mostly well protected and under employed.

Freeman 8/10 – Another stand out and shows why he should be a shoe in for the League One PFA team. Played the high scoring/assist machine Morris and barely gave him a kick. Indeed, Morris spent more time chasing him back than doing anything the other way. Can barely recall Morris touching it! Freeman made him chase back the other way and had numerous lung busting runs at defenders leading to half chances or cynical fouls. His play saw the Scunthorpe man get sent off and he continued to pour down that right hand side. Only knock is a few balls could have been better - a few too close to the keeper or not really picking anyone out. He looks a really class player and I fear clubs higher up may be looking at him as he has all the attributes, pace, skill, athleticism and good work rate. Never thought I would have said that maybe a year ago when he was on loan at Mansfield and seemingly heading down the leagues. Had a huge resurgence.

Lafferty 7.5/10 – Steady game Started well with some good crosses and runs down the left. Nearly made a goal for Sharp. Maybe he was too honest as he got clipped? He put in a few other decent balls and was a real threat. Used the ball well and also got back to defend when he had to. Second half did not see as much of a threat and felt a few crosses were poor. He ended up going off. We do seem better when he plays though.

Basham 8/10 – I am not his biggest fan but he played really well today. Apart from one daft moment where he tried to chest it down and lost it near the end and one run where he looked like he was drunk down the right; he was really good. He did give ball away a few times and technically he is not the best but he showed incredible energy all game. Did not shirk anything and won more headers than he has for some time. Used ball well at times too. So much effort from him today; he left the field having given everything and even though ability wise at times you can see he is lacking, the will to win he showed will hopefully help us get promotion. Was ball watching a bit on the goal but not sure if it was him or Wright nearest the cross and maybe nicked one of them in the way across.

O’Connell 8/10- Thought he was very good. Came onto the ball and attacked it both in the air and on the floor. Some crunching tackles and ensured we just kept recycling the ball back onto the attack. He showed a real determination all game. He really has got better and better as the season has gone on. So committed in everything he does. Lacks pace but is more mobile than you think and had a few driving runs that led to us turning them round the other way.

Wright 7.5/10 – Steady all game. There was the dodgy start after the break when the defence started to lose men and it cost us on the goal. Indeed at the end some ball watching nearly cost us again but apart from this they barely had any chances and Wright just played sensible stuff all game. Read game well, kept it simple and just did the basics of defending.

Fleck 8/10 – Once again superb. He won tackles, chased, harried and pressed all game. He got up and down and showed his total class on the ball. He can do everything really as he passes short and long, runs with it and drives at players. The outstanding player on the pitch along with maybe Freeman. Main weakness is his shooting although he was close in the week and not far off today; he leans back badly when he does shoot most of the time! Been a brilliant signing and whilst Scunthorpe have some decent workmanlike lads in likes of Dawson etc; Fleck is in a different league to them. One thing I have to say is that he missed a tackle in the lead up to the goal. As good as he and Basham were they had part to play in their goal.

Coutts 7.5/10 – Had a superb first half and was bossing things, getting on it, giving it off, finding space and moving it on. Was doing it at pace and also forward which is a knock on him at times. He was at the heart of all our good stuff. He was linking play, taking it from the defence and moving it on. Looked a class act. His touch and ability to get it, move away from a player, find space and move it on was a joy to watch. Second half I felt he did ok but then he started to tire and resorted to playing long diagonal balls a lot (some came off). He was not running with the ball and started to take an age to move it on again. He gave it away twice near the end that was nearly costly. Worrying we had 11 and at the end they looked as strong in the midfield area. He is much fitter than he ever has been but still needs to get stronger and I worry that in some of the recent games he has tired badly. He picked up a cheap booking and then let them get away appealing for a throw.

Duffy 6.5/10 – Mixed really. Some good interchange early but also disappointing for me in some ways in that cannot recall a good final ball all game. Saw he won the Sponsors Man of the Match? Not sure how. He started the game well and first half hour was key in lot of neat moves and was getting in some great areas causing them all sorts of problems. He showed his football brain as he passed and moved. Missed one great chance. Sadly his final ball today was really poor for the most part. He hit first man time after time or over played the ball on through balls. He gave it away quite a bit second half and not sure after the break he offered much at all and twice he set them on the attack. Would have taken him off on the hour.

Hanson 7.5/10 – Impressive again. Worked hard all game and won most of the aerial stuff. Was a good foil for Sharp and used ball well with his feet. Once he tried to do too much and got crowded out second half when he could have been quicker. Did seem tired near the end but I still felt he was winning headers and was taking defenders away from areas giving us space. Will be an important player next week against a physical Bolton side.

Sharp 7.5/10 – Worked hard today and had an early chance he missed. He kept running the lines and I felt he was a decent link player today working well with others. He had a few other sniffs before clinically poaching the goal. Had another good chance not long after but ball came to him quickly, hit his foot and drifted just wide. Him and Hanson been a decent partnership so far and will get goals. I felt the final ball and crosses to them were not quite good enough today sadly despite us having most of the game.

Subs

Lavery – I think I would have put him on wide left for Lafferty maybe or even an extra threat down the right when we faced 10. I think we could have afforded to have gone 3 up top. He looked lively although he is very predictable as constantly tried to jink back inside and players do read this. Involved in a few decent attacks and had one lovely piece of control and effort at the far post.

O’Shea – Came on and played wide left but drifting inside. He got on the ball a few times and does look comfortable receiving and then giving quickly. He had the chance at the end which was a good run and excellent shot and very unlucky. I would have put him on for Duffy much earlier.

Done – Brought on for O’Connell. Odd one. He nearly messed up twice shanking the ball in the corner giving them the ball back.

Manager – Wilder 7.5/10 – He had us bang at it from the start and really on it in all aspects of the game. For once in a big game we gave a big performance for the most part. Picked the right team with all the big players back and most players did well. We tackled, pressed, fought and played good football. Only thing lacking was final ball really and taking the chances that came. Scunthorpe could not live with us first half. We did fade a bit second half and a poor start after the break happened again (has happened a few times) which was a contrast to the first half. After they had a man sent off I felt we lacked the tempo and play we had showed and they saw out the game well and actually at the end either side could have won it.

Will say not sure subs helped. I would have left big Hanson on. Sure he may have tired but he was still a threat and could always be that out ball as we crossed it near the end. Not sure we looked as threatening after he went off. Also the O’Shea for Laffery was odd as Duffy was ineffectual at this stage. The Done one at the end was equally odd. Would always leave a big lad on for set plays at the end both ways and we ended up quite small.

Referee – Mike Jones. Awful. He behaved like a total egomaniac. Blowing his whistle, stopping the game, talking to people for no reason for periods. Then he may aswell have not been on the field as players were clattering each other. He had no control of the game from start to finish. He got the two yellows right but for me should have been harsher earlier on with a very crude Scunthorpe side. How we ended up with as may yellows (well 4 to 4 and then they had an extra for the red) was bewildering.

Crooks did a horrible tackle first half and did not even get booked! Wright was clouted off the ball from Madden and Van Veen also was wildly late on a tackle. He missed a few from us today also, I felt Basham made two great tackles but another was dangerous. He truly was useless.

The one on Coutts summed up how he was. He was desperate to have his say. Instead of just asking him to leave the field he booked him. Never seen that before I do not think or not for a long time! Then when one of their players was a yard from the line he did nothing.

Totally inconsistent from start to finish in everything he did. He gave fouls no one else saw but waved away cynical stuff and some dangerous stuff (both ways – I felt Basham and Freeman both went in dangerously to give things some balance).

It was really odd to watch a seemingly experience and highly rated referee seem like a rabbit in headlights as the game continued to lose control! He went through periods of blowing every few seconds or giving yellows for nothing to letting awful things go. He sometimes wanted a free kick or throw from just the right spot but then other times you could take it wherever you wanted. He was hopeless. An utter buffoon. I was sick of the sight of him constantly wanting to chip in with his say or tell a player what he had just done. If that is the standard of Premier League refereeing then maybe we should stop moaning about some of the League One characters we see!

Crowd – Superb to see the Lane almost full – shame it could not have been even fuller. The rants about the away end stand. Why they cannot be all seated in the lower tier and the Blades fans in the top tier is beyond me? This crap about them all exiting onto Bramall Lane, is exactly that, crap. Other clubs have it at the end of games. We had it in the Premier League. United need to put their foot down with the council/police and if they fail to allow our seats to be filled then they need to give us compensation. If they go up as we may see crowds like that regularly and the police will have to deal with more intimidating atmospheres and followings than Scunthorpe.

Back to today and the crowd was good. Both fans sung and it was louder than it has been all season. Scunthorpe took their entire home following away from home (strange they don’t take more than a few hundred to most other away games?!). The Kop and South Stand were almost full and just some seats spare in the family stand near the away end and then of course the gaps of seats in the Bramall Lane end for aforementioned ‘segregation.’

I felt the players were backed well by the home side. and they saw what a good performance it had been. They were some nerves at the end as United did not know whether to stick or bust and the tensions were similar in the crowd. If we can get some crowds similar to that for likes of Bolton, Bradford and of course some of the games right near the end then the positivity will see us turn performances like that into mostly victories.

It was light years ahead of the dross we saw end Adkins tenure last May against the same opponents Scunthorpe. Today we looked like a football team and it was entertaining to watch with passion, commitment and skill. We have come a long way in less than 12 months. Just hope we can finish the job in the final run now.

No, you should not get critised for this quote - absolutely spot on and has been the main problem most of the season.

We dominated last week v P'boro and had to rely on an 87 minute goal.

Dominated again today - 2 chances missed in the first 10 minutes - the one Duffy pulled wide was poor.

Agree with those ratings. Duffy was the sponsors' MOTM!

Watching the goal back looks like Basham's man even though Freeman closest to it when he does score and does not really react (gets stuck). Both posts one were so close (obviosuly!). They should have scored with it being close range and right in front of goal. Ours was a good effort and was probably closer in that it came off the inside of the post. I thought it was in at the game when it went past the keeper.

The red card was horrible. A blatant and cynical block off.

Is he serious?

Says they were miles better second half. Hope he means than first half rather than us. To say a point was the least they deserved is baffling. He seems to have taken a whack to the head.

The red card was as blatant a yellow as I have seen and was horrible. He took the man out high and late.He had commited 3 fouls in between the two yellows but forgets that? No mention of the umpteen other hatchet jobs from the rest of their players. They were lucky to escape with 10 men. The lad first half should have walked for a horror tackle - not even booked.

*tin hat on in preparation*

I've said this before and I know I'll get hammered for it again, but....

Seriously can some explain to me what Lafftery does for the team? I don't mean this in a cynical way, but a genuine question, because I completely miss what he's about. What did he contribute today to get his rating at a 7.5? I honestly don't see it, sorry lads.

He doesn't score, he doesn't assist, he gave the ball away in dangerous areas on several occasions today, plus the way he patheticapl lost the ball when trying to shepherd it out and nearly cost us a goal. I think comparing him to Freeman highlights how little he offers, in my opinion.

You've obviously seen a 7.5 performance, fair enough, I'm clearly missing something and I'm happy to admit it. What I saw was a lad contributing nothing to the team defensively of offensively! (Again!)

one line sticks out

United – A really good performance. We have played worse than that this season and won.

but thats football , you cant win them all

thanks for the opinion db

Good report DB...Thought we battered them first half..Sharp and Duffy should have scored and we had other chances..Second half not quite as good ,but still by far the better team...I thought we should have made substitutions a bit earlier..I wanted Lavery on a bit earlier especially, but not a bad result in the end as it turned out with Bolton drawing, but it would have been great to get a winner.
Moore 6,Freeman 7.5,Bash 7.5,Wright 7,JOC 7.Lafferty 6,Coutts 8,Fleck 8(MoM)Duffy 7,Hanson 6,Sharp 7...Subs..Lavery 6,O Shea 6.
Ref was shocking.

Good competitive game to watch which makes nice change from the park the bus 10 men behind the ball like im used to with the majority of league 1 & we were the better team created majority of chances but I'm still very happy with that point because it keeps the 5pt gap & as stoppage time showed both teams couldve won that because 1 minute were going for 3pts as lavery just hit post then next minute your hanging on for a point as Scunthorpe hit the post

I think im right in saying that today attendance was 4th biggest in Britain today i think only bettered by Wolves Middlesboro & Celtic. Which for a 3rd tier game is astounding

What an absolute fucking cretin.

Drawing that game was a very Sheffield United thing to do. Heaven forbid that we should break the division open and actually win. I expect the same result next week.

Does anything bad ever happen to Fleetwood? Their last 10 years are the opposite of ours. Everything they try works out for them.

Well done DB, quality as always!

Coutts was booked for telling the ref to fuck off after a bad tackle and not going off the pitch. We were sat right in front of him as he did it!

There was an announcement near the end about 'fans in the Westfield corner exiting to the right...security issues...blah, blah.' I left the South stand at the Bramall Lane end - along with thousands of others - to be met with a meat wagon parked across BL, coppers in full riot gear and us Blades were directed towards the London Road area along Hill Street - nowhere near where I wanted to be. An announcement should have been made so most fans would have made for Shoreham Street, but that wouldn't have caused the inevitable trouble that ensued. When we got past 'Go Outdoors', we were 'allowed' to back down John Street towards 'Cricketers Corner' where all the Scunt fans were pretending to be hard. This was utterly pointless. The coppers should keep the away fans in until the home fans have dispersed (the train back had already been delayed). No doubt the same will happen in 'high risk' games next season when those little cherubs from Leeds, Cardiff etc. will be allowed out at the same time as the home crowd - a ploy deliberately designed to cause maximm trouble and justify the coppers' unwarranted overtime. In the past I've heard bollocks about 'keeping the away fans in would infringe their human rights' and other such shite. Well, I'd argue that women and children being subjected to terrifying situations infringes their human rights.

It'll probably be worse next season for big games as SYPD will be operating the usual ROS (Reciprocal Overtime Scam) with 'Durham Constabulary' and those coppers who have enjoyed foreign jollies for years looking for Ben Neeham and Madelaine McCann should be recalled and actually made to justify their salaries.

Does anything bad ever happen to Fleetwood? Their last 10 years are the opposite of ours. Everything they try works out for them.
Didn't we score a 94th minute equaliser against them this season? Don't begrudge a club that has made sensible, considered decisions and invested wisely.

Great report ,saw it exactly the same.

Other than doing a decent job of Cllosing defenders down, Hanson was poor and was our least effective player. He categorically DId NOT win most of his headers. Was way less than 50%. As was the case in the last home game. Which given this is what his game is about, is a worry.

It's all abart opinions . To give him a 7.5 and Duffy a 6.5, IMHO isn't right. Duffy was sponsors MOTM btw (Not mine).

The football. We are playing is great to watch and I love it but as you and others say we maybe are overdoing it
fast becoming Man City of 1St divi
wilder brought Hanson in to try and be a bit more direct not worked 100%
yet but I think it will

Excellent "summary" Deadbat. You know what I'm going to say about Jayo's "very unlucky" shot though, don't you? :)

Most ridiculous after match interview from a manager I have seen for years

I remember Blackwell's after a 3-0 defeat (at Blackpool, I think), when we were losing regularly.

Protested we had been the better team "second half". When asked what he was going to do to change things round, "hope the ball starts to bounce for us".

Thanks, Semipro...

Deadbat, you know I'm a big fan. As we've been away lately I've read your reports out to my wife as I read them. She pointed out you do repeat yourself a lot and say the same things in the intro, the report, the summary, and then sometimes in the player ratings. Although I'd never realised that, I must say it is so and maybe you can save yourself time and effort. Please regard this as constructive criticism!!

Southend are sixth and we have beaten them away.

Which goes to show that the "top six" is not set in stone and we won't know how many of them we have and haven't beaten until the end of the season. Wimbledon were in the top six for a while. I claim them....

UTB

Hanson headed the ball for Billy's goal, as he did at Peterborough. 2 headers worth 3 points.
