My first away game

Leeds away, Tuesday night April 1976. United already relegated but win 1-0. Dad had got free tickets off a Leeds st holder, so we were in their west stand across from the Lowfields. If I remember correctly Blades fans were behind the goal, south stand side. Woody scored.
Lovely goal by Woody from outside the box. Keeper David Harvey hardly moved

Woodward and Jones gave us the two goal lead in the 1st half. McCalliog and an own goal levelled the matters

Think the below goal is the own goal

First time Bert ever saw United play.

My very first away game came less than 6 weeks after my first home and to this day is still the most away goals I've ever seen United score.
Think it was Christmas time ish away at Cardiff in the 77/78 season when we thumped them 6-1. I thought all away matches would be the same and here I am 40 years on and never bettered it! Bit of a blur now but I'm sure Bobby Campbell got a couple and Woody got one. Maybe Cliff Calvert but I'm guessing now. I'm sure Silent will put me right
Calvert, Campbell 2, Kenworthy, Hamilton and Woody. Saw footage of the goals in "On The Ball" the following week

My memory of my first away game? Bob Atkins!:)

That was my first away game too. My memory is different though as my Dad made us leave just before the end to avoid any bother outside.

Only ever seen a photo of the goal...

Gutted to have missed that game. I was playing cricket over the road at Trent Bridge that day. You could hear all the cheers go up all afternoon.

Are you sure it was the 5-2 game, I'm sure that was Jan/Feb time, perhaps the May 93 one Cloughies last home game? Which county were you playing for?

Has anyone ever ever referred to them as that, apart from politically correct commentators?

It's LINESMAN!

Can't win ...put linesman first and expected someone to pull me up on it.

No, you're right pal. It was the 93' match (weird how your memory plays tricks as you get older, init!). I was out of the country for the 2-5 match. I would have loved to have been at those games.
Wasn't county cricket. In those days Notts entered their reserves/colts in the league cricket system. Played there quite a few times in league cricket and a few cup finals. UTB.

Even at league cricket level should imagine it's a smashing place to play cricket ... has to be better than Graves Park lol

Rotherham, preseason friendly Aug 1970. Won 2-0 ( Currie & Colquhoun) the week before the promotion season started..... Colin Addison up front & John Barnwell in midfield!

Ninian park
0-0
Only memories are keeper made a save think it was either Waugh or Conroy (was the reserve /younger) and the first time I drank black coffee

To be honest it was probably the most boring day of my life up to that point and probably since

It was great to play there, pal. Very different game to playing on a club ground. Ball seems to hit you a lot faster somehow.
In the same league was Notts (Trent Bridge), Chesterfield (Queens Park), Steetley (Shireoaks) and Worksop (Central Ave) so there were some terrific venues.
Never played at Bramall Lane though! ;-)
UTB

Mine too was Hillsborough 1979. Didn't go again until Hull City in 4th Division - lost there too. Picked up after that, culminating in Darlington last match.

No idea about mine. Far too young to remember.

Could have been any team we played away between about 1991 and 1993.

First one without my dad would have been Millmoor in '79. I was on the Tivoli end with a couple of Miller mates. It was rammed with Blades... and rammed full stop. Of course the wall collapsed that day (I spilled onto the pitch along with hundreds of others), but my overriding memory was just how fucking hot it was in the crush. What an atmosphere though... tense and fractious all day long... strong memory.

Ground was full of Blades, I actually felt sorry for home fans as they were well outnumbered

September 24th 1966

Another 2-2 draw,

Went with my father sat in the open seats at the side. Rival fans sitting together. Their kop was a mixture of Wendy at the front and Blades at the back. Fans used to have masses of banners in those days, made for a great spectacle.

We raced into a 2-0 lead and they pulled it back, can't remember the scorers

Thanks Silent, I would have guessed at Woodward and Jones but wasn't sure. I still have vivid flashbacks about the whole experience. My father died 1993 and it's a fond memory of him.
You ought to be United's historian and statistician, or perhaps you are ? I'm sure I bought Denis Clareborough's ( spelling) book once but can't find it

My fourth away match. Gerry Young's testimonial was my second and the Watney Cup semi at Derby was my third

A 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe in September 1959 at the Old Showground,i was 9 years old and went with my older brother on the football excursion from the Midland station. As very few people owned a car back then, the train excursions were often the best and cheapest way to travel to away games. The carriages didn't have corridors, just 8 seats and no toilets and a great mix of fans, kids, dads and grandads all walks of life and football talk all the way there and back.As a young kid i remember thinking it was 'magical' to watch United play away and at 66 years old i still do !!

won 1.0 Mansfield away . Think duffield scored a pen. Remember going In my dad's mates car and it been a lovely sunny afternoon. During the match think it rained, snowed and hail stoned.

Went with my dad to Sincil Bank in 1983 and we beat Lincoln 2-0. Memory not what it was but I think Trusson and Cockerill scored.

September 1971, Leicester. Went with my Dad, and remember being on a small wooden terrace down one side of the ground. We won, 1-0 I think but remember nothing about the goal.

March 21st 1970. Lost 2-1 at Leicester. Len Glover opened the scoring, Gil Reece equalised just before half time. Rodney Fern got the winner. Woody had a good goal disallowed near the end. After the match Woody made all the players in the team coach sign my programme. Top man! Wish I still had the programme
Rod Fern, remember him from Chesterfield.

First away trip for me was with my da , in the F.A cup to an up and coming Aston Villa side , they were very good although a league below us I think they got promoted that season .
They spanked us 4-1 , remember the Holt end was fucking massive , the old away end was quite big as well .
First away match on my own was Forest away lost that one 6-1 , got National coach from Pond Street , coach number 12 , the pigs gave a few a bit of a hiding , a lot of aggro at the game in Nottingham as well for a young teenager it was fucking scary
but I knew a few who used to get stuck in from around where I used to live who were well up for it .
Forest tried taking the kop in the reverse fixture and got smashed all over the place .
Our coach window got put through in Pond Street that day, we were late getting there, and got put on the side terrace with their lot.
