The Blades got back to winning ways as they saw off AFC Wimbledon with an emphatic victory at Bramall Lane. An early lead given to them via the opportunistic Billy Sharp was doubled up from debutant James Hanson. Second half goals late in the day came from the excellent John Fleck and substitute Caolan Lavery to give the home side the deserved victory in a dominant display.

United dominated the game from start to finish and controlled possession and territory all game. And all the outstanding players were wearing red and white. Wimbledon were poor in comparison and were never really in with a chance after the early Sharp goal. For the Blades it was a return to form as they showed some of the play that had taken them to the summit of League One.

Manager Chris Wilder made tweaks the line up from the defeat at home to Fleetwood with Jake Wright in for Chris Basham and James Hanson replacing Marc McNulty; who was not even in the 16. On the bench were January newcomers O’Shea, Caruthers and Riley, joining Long, Done and Basham.

AFC Wimbledon featured former Blades Lyle Taylor and Dominic Poleon in their match day squad on their first official visit to the Lane in their new guise.

The game began with an opening goal inside 2 minutes. Hanson won an early header and this led to a spell of possession. United attacked down the right and won a free kick as Barcham pulled down Freeman. The free kick came in from Fleck and seemed too close to keeper Shea but the goalkeeper could not hold and his parry rebounded inadvertently off SHARP and rolled into the net. It was a fortuitous goal in some ways but a bad mistake from the keeper.

Buoyed by this early boost United dominated the ball with the midfield axis of Coutts, Duffy and Fleck to the fore with the latter spraying balls around the park making Wimbledon cover a lot of ground to try and defend gaps. Wimbledon had a rare opening when Reeves shot at Moore from distance but it was comfortable and United came again with Duffy coming inside to test Shea after neat footwork saw him gain space for a curling effort.

Some nice football saw Freeman, Coutts and Duffy involved with Hanson also linking well but the ball was blocked. Another neat move saw Hanson hold it up and play in Fleck but the ball was cleared. Hanson then headed just over after good work from Freeman saw the cross come over from the right.

Soon after the second goal came. Duffy was the architect with a run and ball inside the full back to the racing Freeman who drove into the box and then cut back a precise ball to the waiting HANSON who smashed the ball home despite the defenders attempts to clear on the line.

United continued to dominate possession with Wimbledon’s main threat coming from the muscular Elliott who was proving a handful when the ball was pumped forward.

Kelly brought down Freeman leading to a free kick which was a routine that had been worked on with Duffy playing back to Sharp but the ball was blocked. Soon after the half time whistle came.

At the break the home side were forced into a change as Ebanks Landell had to go off after picking up a knock and he was replaced by Basham. United had started the second half poorly in recent weeks and this trend continued with a slow start as Wimbledon had a decent spell. However, they failed to really test Moore despite seeing at least some of the ball in the United final third. Despite this improvement, the home side had two great chances to extend the lead. Sharp prodded wide after good work from Lafferty saw an inviting cross come over that culminated a lovely move. The United striker then really ought to have sealed the game when put clear by Duffy. One on One he opted for the chip but keeper Shea read it and he did not get enough elevation on the effort and was saved quite easily.

United had more chances as Lafferty headed wide when he should have scored and then Duffy’s free kick was just wide.

The best Wimbledon chance came when Moore made a poor choice to come off his line and did not get too the long punt forward and ex Blade Taylor flicked header went just wide. It was a let off for the keeper in a game where he had not had much to do. Fleck continued to the key man as he was driving forward with the ball and making United tick with Coutts doing the steady job just behind him and Duffy always looking a threat. Hanson was proving a real handful and had barely lost a header all game but was also linking well with others.

Wimbledon made a double change just over the hour mark with Francomb and Poleon coming on for Bulman and Barcham. However, it was United again who looked the more likely with Shea saving a powerful drive from Duffy. Lavery came on for Sharp and with just over 10 minutes to go; the third goal came.

The substitute Lavery was involved winning the ball from Charles before FLECK interchanged passes with Hanson and then delightfully dragged it past the defender before sweeping the ball home under the body of Shea who may have felt he could have done better.

Carruthers came on for his home debut replacing Duffy in the 83rd minute. Taylor had a ow shot that Moore saved well before as the game entered stoppage time, a fourth goal came. Fleck and Carruthers linked well and played the ball into LAVERY who cleverly stepped inside his defender and hit a delightful shot right into the far corner at the Kop end. The final few minutes saw United play a spell of keep ball before the final whistle came to signify a welcome victory for the majority of those inside Bramall Lane.

United – It was much more like it after some recent disappointments in performances and results. Today we were back at it.

We looked more solid at the back with Wright making a difference with his cleaver reading of the game and steady defending. The wing backs got up and down and Freeman especially was a real threat all game. The midfield were also able to get back to standards of before with Coutts keeping the ball well and playing more forward, Duffy getting in those little areas and always looking a threat with several good balls and efforts on goal. Fleck was outstanding and the man of the match as he ran the game with his energy, tenacity, strong running and passing. Today he topped it off with a great goal.

Up top Sharp actually scored one but should have had three but was a menace as always and played well off Hanson. They did link well with some nice interchange and I felt the big lad had a really good debut. He won the ball in the air all game and was nice and sensible with link up play. Took his goal really well and worked hard all game. It was a big difference between him and Clarke who did not offer the physical threat that we expected when we signed him. I am certain that likes of Done, Lavery, McNulty and Clarke will be mostly used as impact subs now and that we will go with the front two who played today. At this level it should be a very good partnership. As I thought Hanson contributed as much when not even touching/winning the ball. He chased, harried and challenged for everything and this meant more space for others and helped tire defenders out. His play saw Sharp and Duffy get much more space.

The early goal really helped us and made sure the crowd and indeed players could relax. After this we dominated the ball and did not make any huge mistakes (Moore nearly made one second half) and this meant we always looked likely winners. The second goal basically sealed it. After this despite Wimbledon giving it a bit more of a go second half, they never really looked like getting back into it. United continued to create chances and it could have been a lot more than 4-0. We did squander a fair few chances. We got back into the pressing/harrying we had shown and moved the ball much quicker. Having Hanson gave us another outlet in that we could get it up the field quicker and then gain territory from throws ins we won or knock downs we got onto.

Wimbledon were poor but credit to United. A really good, solid performance with some good goals and some nice football throughout. We looked an assured side today and did the nasty stuff as well. I said last game we did not win the battles and do the tackling, running and effort we have been doing and today first and foremost we did that and that allowed the midfield three to control the game.

Great we now have some strength in depth with players to come on. Good to see a glimpse of Carruthers and Lavery now knows he had to play well when he gets time with the extra competition. Be good to see O’Shea and Riley in the coming weeks too hopefully if they are needed. Players now know they have to play well or they will lose their place and the bench looked very strong today.

We now have two very tough away games before that big double header at home. I think Peterborough on their day are right there as one of the better sides in the league but are very inconsistent. I think like at Southend we will have to be right at the top of our game next week to get a win. We then have a long difficult midweek trip to Bristol. Rovers have lost their main striker which may help but make no mistake it will a real challenge to get maximum return from the next two. I would take being undefeated in any way and that sets us for those big home games. Bolton and Scunthorpe have easier games coming up on paper than we do. If we could maintain or even extend the current cushion then we have a great incentive. We don’t want to go into those games only a few points ahead of Bolton or a few behind Scunny.

Wimbledon – They were really poor. They have done well this season with some great results and have beaten some of the better teams also. However today they were never at the races really and were well beaten. They conceded a sloppy first goal and then after this they never got a foothold in the game. United dominated the ball but also won much of the loose/50-50 stuff too. I felt we were won most battles all over the field. Wimbledon never really kept the ball for more than a few passes and their main tactic seemed to the lumped ball forward to Elliott and Taylor. Nothing wrong with that as United have been exposed to this kind of ball recently but today they only had scraps to work on. They had a decent chance at 2-0 when Taylor nodded wide but cannot remember many clear chances they had all game save for Moore stopping a Taylor shot late on.

They are a big physical side who work hard but today the life sapped out of them after the early goal and they did not really offer much of note all game. They looked very lacklustre and United football wise were considerably better than them in touch, control and passing. We had better movement on and off the ball.

Budget wide they of course are probably nowhere near ours and did brilliantly to get up and to get to a position of relative safety already. They should have enough to stay up. The key will be on small crowds and limited resources if they can come again next season and will need some shrewd recruitment to avoid being in a struggle next season. I think they are a bit off being able to compete for promotion at this level yet despite showing glimpses of making a playoff push this season.

Opponent man of the match : I thought the lad Elliott worked really hard and put a shift in up top winning a few headers and chasing lost causes. Outside of this I cannot recall too many players who could say they had good games. Soares on debut tried hard but struggled with the play of United’s midfield.

Opponent Weak link : The lads at the back struggled all game with Robinson and Charles never really getting to grips with the United front two. The full backs also did not really stop constant runs from Freeman and Lafferty. I have to say though I felt that the former United player Lyle Taylor was awful. He looked exactly the game ineffective, physically weak player I remembered. Completely lacks awareness of where to run and how to link with players and as a I say so weak; not sure he could outmuscle a plastic bag. He may have scored a few goals at level below (not as many this year) but saw nothing to suggest that he had improved that much since Weir had brought him to the Lane.

SUFC Player Ratings –

Moore 6.5/10 – He made a few routine saves and one good one at the end where he held a powerful Taylor shot but had very little to do expect for one rush of blood when he came rushing out and this nearly led to them scoring. It was a moment of madness and nearly cost us when we looked so comfortable.

Freeman 7.5/10 – A few poor crosses that did not beat the first man notwithstanding he was excellent down the right. Kept bursting forward and always an option on that side. They never picked him up first half and he was involved in both opening goals winning a free kick and then pulling back to Hanson. He was not quite as effective second half as they tried to plug that side more and we went down the left more.

Lafferty 7/10 – Thought he was quiet first half and he was a bit sloppy at times when he had the ball but improved as the game went on. He put in a good cross for Sharp who should have scored and then got into the box well but headed wide when maybe he ought to have done better. We do seem much better when he plays generally as quietly does a decent job for the side.

Ebanks Landell 7/10 – Better than he has been. He won headers and attacked the ball. Lost one 50/50 but got back well after it. Seems to be helped when he plays to the right of the three rather than in the centre when Wright plays. Had a real battle with the lad Elliott when he was on the field. Picked up a knock (hip I believe) but has a week to recover so hope he should be ok.

O’Connell 7/10 – Solid again. Won headers and made tackles and was committed as he always is. His distribution was a bit mixed but that is picking out things and nit picking. He has been one of our most consistent players this season after a dodgy start.

Wright 7.5/10 – He made a difference. Nice and calm/assured and read the game well. Stepped into the tackles and won them and made blocks/interceptions. He was decent on the ball just keeping it nice and simple. Quietly effective and will keep his place I am sure.

Fleck 8/10 –Excellent and my man of the match. He covered so much ground and won tackles/picked up loose stuff but it was of course his passing and driving with the ball that made the difference. He showed a real swagger in some of his swashbuckling runs. The third goal summed up his game. He was all over the place and really good to watch. Technically he was excellent and showed he can pass short and long but also always wants to get on the front foot.

Coutts 7/10 – Nice and steady today. He kept the ball well and moved it on when he could. He rarely gives the ball away and shows he can get it out of his feet quickly to move it on. I felt today he did not get forward as much but the other two clearly were pulling the strings in this area so that is why he maybe sat back a bit. When he did have it though he kept it moving and I felt passed it quicker than he has in recent weeks.

Duffy 7.5/10 – Not everything came off today but he was involved throughout. Two or three shots the keeper saved after good skill saw him create the chances himself. He also was able to link well with others and get into those little pockets where he has been so effective much of the season. Took some good free kicks also and was involved in many of our better attacks. A difficult player to mark and pick up and I think that Hanson will help him a lot creating more space.

Hanson 7.5/10 – Excellent debut. Scored a good goal and also won most of his headers/challenges. Linked well first half and was able to ensure that knocks down/link play went to Sharp or a teammate rather than just in a general direction. He worked really hard and was more mobile than I remembered. He is a big lad though and his hulking size gives us that intimidation factor up top we did not have. Did not tire either for someone who has not played much football this season and was as strong at the end as he was involved in attacks right to the end. A few sloppy passes when he actually time in second half were only real negative.

Sharp 7/10 – Worked hard all game and got the vital first goal. It was a real poaches goals and one of those were he was just in the right space at the right time. He maybe should have scored two or three more and was a bit clever on the chip when needed to just put his foot through it or could have run on more before deciding what to do. He missed another chance when he ran straight onto the ball and it was maybe harder than it looked to score due to the angle of his run. He linked well with Hanson and was closer to him than he has been with other strikers. People have said he does not play well with a target man but he was fine today so that might not be true but of course this was just one game but early signs are good of forming an effective partnership.

Subs

Basham 7/10 – Actually had a decent second half. Attacked the ball, came onto it well and used it well when he had it. We did not suffer at all as I feared when EEL came off for him and was really solid. He faces a fight for his spot now though with Wright playing so well and helping plug a leaky defensive.

Lavery – Looked lively. He seems to have been better when he has been a sub than when he has started in most games. He offers pace and running against a tiring defence and did just that with a few runs and half chances before the eventual goal at the death. He took this brilliantly.

Carruthers – Neat and tidy and looked energetic. He played a few balls into the front men and was involved in the final goal. Need to see more of him of course but a good lad to have around by the looks of it.

Manager – Wilder 8/10 – Been criticised for the changes or lack of them recently but today got it right bringing back Wright and starting Hanson. Both played well, with the debutant scoring also. We got back to standards of earlier in the season; and started the game well with a real purpose. Seemed to get back to the swagger of games earlier in the season when we have had the runs. The defence has made mistakes and the strikers have missed chances in recent games but I still feel controlling the midfield winning tackles/50-50 balls and then passing it at pace and forward allows us to pin teams back. Wilder had the side back to the pressing both on and off the ball that has seen us get top. We now enter what was billed as the tough run we all have been looking at with some really tricky away games and those big home games. In a months’ time we will be in a better position to see if this is going to be the year.

Ref – Officials were fine. David Webb was one of the better ones we have seen this year. Barely a bad tackle all game. He got most free kicks right and I cannot recall a bad decision of note. He let it flow and I felt we barely noticed him which is a good sign. The fact the game was so one sided helps a ref though but he was very good today and deserves mentioning.

Crowd – Another over 20,000 with a few hundred behind the goal supporting United again. Saw we had given Bolton 4,500 tickets – does that mean they will have upper and lower – I thought the whole point was to trial it before these games so we could have Blades fans there for these games? Anyone know? Anyway, Wimbledon brought maybe 800-900 fans but the early goal deflated them. They did sign a few songs but recognised it was a poor show from their side on the first visit to the Lane. The sarcastic cheers when they had a shot at goal summed up the frustration. The home fans were still a bit quiet for my liking. I am hoping the next two games with bigger away followings and the opponents league position will see the volume increase but it is awfully quiet for a side top of the league. There was a lot of appreciation for some of the play but was quite reserved cheering and clapping rather than boisterous noise. Maybe I am being a bit harsh but the fans do need to crank it up for the run in.

Sorry no idea why words are being linked to other sites?!!

Agree with it all but would give an extra half mark to Coutts ,OConnell and Moore. Difficult for a keeper when he has very little to do ,but Moore keeps concentration by talking to his defenders all the time. They must love having that advice and encouragement from behind.

Great report as alway i'd also mark OConnell up a bit and Moore down. He had nothing to do and then tried to get involved in the game with a crazy rush of blood. However noticed he got in the Sun's div 1 team of the day, so what do I know.

Agree with most of that Deadbat, I thought this was a great return to form by the team, Duffy in particular. Wonder what would have happened if Hanson had been in the team when we went to Walsall?, someone to match them in size and strength? Ah well, that's history now. Four goals, three from forward players, one from a good midfielder, a debut goal for Big James, a great burst through goal from Fleck, great tricky feet from Lavery to beat his marker and score.

I didn't think we got going until around 60 minutes. I was much more impressed with our first half performance against Gillingham than yesterday. For the last half hour we played some fantastic football.
Their man of the match was their small midfielder, the number 8 Jake Reeves.

Many thanks for the reports Deadbat, as always superb.

I'm off for 6 weeks to the other side of the world ( booked before Wilder was appointed!!) I'll be relying on you more than you will ever appreciate.

As for yesterday, welcome to Hanson, welcome back Wright, love you Sharp, well played Duffy, Coutts (looked to play forward for a change), Fleck M.O. Season already, O'C, Freeman, Moore ( even his charge out suits me actually, better that than nothing at all), love them all. Bash super-sub!!

O'Shea and Chapman can add real value perhaps. Carruthers and Riley can add real quality and value for certain.

Looking at the table we just need to make sure we don't lose to Bolton and Scunthorpe.

Sorry I'm going away, but so happy. Give Wilder, Knill and Mitchell 10 year contracts NOW.

Moore 7, Freeman 7.5, O'C 7, EEL 7, Wright 8, Bash 7, Duffy 7.5, Coutts 7, Fleck 8.5, Lafferty 6, Sharp 7, Hanson 8, Lavery 7, Carruthers 7.

Great report as always DB. Us expats have become to rely on you!

"The free kick came in from Fleck and seemed too close to keeper Shea but the goalkeeper could not hold and his parry rebounded inadvertently off SHARP and rolled into the net. It was a fortuitous goal in some ways but a bad mistake from the keeper".

Having watched replays of the first goal a few times you can see how Sharp almost contacted the ball directly from the free kick. It was this that caused the goalkeeper to take his eye off the ball and fumble it. It was a nice piece of work and deserved the fortune.

Looking at the side last Saturday I believe United are doing well in the transfer market, ins and outs, for the first time in years and years, maybe since Bassett !

That's stage 1 but then they need managing and motivating and we are doing that as well.

Always great to watch a side that is confident, 'at it' for 90 minutes and playing with a smile rather than a frown.

Hope we are charging Bolton the same price they made us stump up for the game at their place! Robbing Bastards!

Thought the ref was very good. Lot's of physical stuff from both CF's and CB's which could have become a whistle fest. He didn't let it and the game prospered for it (despite the dick head a few seats away who wants a foul and a booking every time the opposition go for the ball, he really is a tedious prick).

Don't usually do points as such but I would swap Freeman and Coutts DB. Freeman had a really poor spell for 20 minutes after HT where he couldn't put a foot right. Coutts actually played a poor ball 20 minutes from the end and the bloke behind me (who generally hates him) noted this was the first bad ball he'd played all game (he'd have been a 9 for me if his second half had matched his first).

Excellent report as usual

One point I would change is your report on Carruthers.

You called him "Neat and tidy and looked energetic".
I'd say he looked "confident, talented and looked very comfortable on the balll"

He did a fancy back heel pass to one of our players.
So it seems he fancies himself a little, a bit of a show off but he looks a excellent buy and already at a similar level and style to the impressive Duffy, Coutts and Fleck. Agree need to see more of him though.

Worth a like just for the tedious prick description

Hanson looks a great signing - big, strong, intelligent, hard-working etc.... loved how he pulled back and across from his marker to pick up Freeman's cross. Once again Lavery showed what he can do in the air when he won the header against a bigger defender to knock the ball down for Hanson who then set up Fleck for number 3.
Wimbledon's best player (by a country mile) was No. 8 Jake Reece (23 year old previously with Spurs) who covered more ground than anyone in an effort to fire them up - two great feet, tremendous energy and very classy looking player. We will meet him again at a higher level for sure.

Deadbat, thanks for the wombles report and from the half dozen or so games I can calibrate your reports against I know they are always spot on and capture all the subtleties well so trust them for the games I can't make. Hope something in the cloud is recording them all. You should have James Shield's job, you'd be far better.

For Bristol I'm expecting if things go well at Peterborough we might see a couple like Billy and Freeman rested and maybe O'Shea and Riley given a chance.
