The Carruthers injury came at a bad time. He was brought in specifically to add competition, and from first look appeared as though he had a good mix of attributes to allow him to replace whichever of the midfield 3 were having an off-day. We'd have seen him a lot the last few games, and it'll be great to have him back fit (and O'Shea as an extra option) hereon in.

I had to laugh listening to the 'experts' yesterday on the Manure/Wigan game.They were bemoaning the fact that Manure were getting nowhere passing sideways and backwards in front of 2 banks of 4,then two decent crosses and headers,2-0 up and all over !! It doesn't have to be hoof,you just need to adapt to the situation,perhaps it will make the opposition think twice before they park the bus if they know you have an effective 'plan B'.

Coutts has dropped back of late to try and get on the ball without Jake Wright in the back 3 nobody is comfortable in the middle of the 3 doing that job certainly not EEL so Coutts has to go and get it which pulls the 3 of the midfield 10yards further back than where they are most effective that in turn isolates the front 2 and without Done running in behind there isn't the space for us to play, Hanson should hold it up to allow the 3 + Laffery & Freeman to get more involved and push teams back 10 yards allowing us to play again.....hopefully.....Jake Wright back as the middle of the 3 definitely at the expense of Bash or EEL

Our 'problem' is a lack of pace. Teams have figured how we play and are now pressing our midfielders as they are all passers of a ball and don't have the pace to decisively go past players. We need an outlet out wide with real gears or a central midfielder who can go past players. Maybe Carruthers or OShea can do that in the centre but we've lost Chapman out wide and I think that is costing us.

Wilder when we get promoted and you are building for next season think pace, pace and more pace as this squad is nowhere near quick enough for the level above

Agreed about the pace. However even without this acceleration Duffy, Coutts and Fleck have been excellent this season and shown pace at times when it matters. Sadly in recent games teams seem to have realised that they can sit off deep and without the necessary pace and penetration either wide or up top we are relying on very good interplay/football to get through teams. At times we have still done it (Gills first half) but in other games recently we seem to be lacking ideas.

I think Coutts and Duffy have had a few poor games but sadly teams also have realised that they can sit off Coutts and he has stopped driving forward like he was. He seems too have become the sideways/backwards player of last season in recent weeks. He needs to advance with the ball more. Duffy is often crowded out as teams are flooding the middle. He has overplayed for me and needs to get back to basics. I think Fleck has mostly kept to his standard and is the one who actually penetrates, runs at people and plays forward passes. The other two are great footballers but in recent times they have simply not hurt teams and have taken way too many touches to do simple things thus slowing play down completely and allowing teams to get men behind the ball.

I think Carruthers will come straight in now if any are off their game and O'Shea offers a like for like for Duffy or even to play wide.

I do think a different option up top in Hanson will help so long as we dont go long/high all the time. It is very hard to play through teams all the time. We have bucked the trend from some teams who have gone up in recent years who relied on battering and bullying teams (not all have - Wigan were a good football side last year) but you cannot rely on that tippy tappy stuff when teams sit 10 behind the ball. Now with Hanson even if he does not win every header, he will take players attention and will ensure we have more of the ball in the box where we can hurt teams. In recent games we have not got it into the box quick enough. The key will be for players like Duffy to get in and around Hanson when the ball comes in. It worries me outwide of Freeman (which is a bit of a freak occurence) that nobody seems to score consistently outside Sharp or even look like scoring. 2 league goals from Coutts and Fleck is still quite pathetic really.

Absolutely spot on.

A few of us made the point a couple of weeks ago, that the uncertainty that permeates the back 3 when Wright doesn't play, plainly has an impact on how the midfield plays, which in turn creates a problem up font. The drop off in actual performances (notwithstanding the results) against Coventry, Oldham, Northampton and Bury, were testament to that.

The concern is that Wilder, for whatever reason, failed to make the obvious tweak against Gillingham and then compounded it by neglecting to do it against Fleetwood. The dropping of Lavery, seemingly to justify his rant against the strikers after the Gillingham match, following the refusal to change the defence after the Walsall game seemingly to back-up his argument that the Walsall result was just down to a '15 minute mad spell', had unpleasant echoes of Clough's pig-headedness. Hopefully, it will prove to have been a brief aberration.

Hope you're right about Sharp and Hanson, but I can't see it. If Hanson works within the width of the penalty area (which he should), then it's up to Billy to make the runs out wide. If he does that he won't get in goalscoring positions half as often. It'll be like watching him under Blackwell I fear.

Regarding McNulty, I've seen him have a couple of good games where his movement has been excellent. So he can do it. But sadly in all the other games it's been garbage. Thus, as a player who's seemingly unwilling to learn or sacrifice himself for the team, it's time to say cheerio.

One issue of 3-5-2 is that you don't have much width other than the WB. If he gets caught or plays narrow then the pitch can get very small. There's no FB overlap which a lot of teams use when games are tight.

That's the conundrum Wilder has. 3-5-2 gives us the ability to play Duffy in a free role behind two strikers but means we are solely reliant on WBs for width.

He's out of contract in the summer, so taking a loan deal is a seriously ballsy move, he could have a career ending injury in the me to few months and never make this kind of money ever again. Says a lot about the lads temperament, backs himself and not afraid of risks.

He's got everything to play for, and by all accounts has some attacking quality (scoring and assisting in a pretty poor Chessy team).

I'm hoping he's going to be the surprise hero of our run in

They were back to early season form no doubt about that and that's what I wanted.
