<< Joe Riley has revealed he was convinced to join Sheffield United by Manchester United academy chief Nicky Butt .

The 20-year-old defender has joined the League One side until the end of the season.

And Riley, who made two first-team appearances under Louis van Gaal last season, has revealed how Butt's endorsement sealed the deal.

He told the Sheffield Telegraph: “Nicky only had really good things to say about Sheffield United.

“He spoke really highly about the club, the ground and the crowd. For me, coming here makes perfect sense and I can’t wait to get out there and hopefully show people what I can do.

"It ticks every single box, to be fair, and when someone like Nicky talks it through with you and confirms what you already think then, to be honest, that just hammers it home.

"I don’t know anybody who doesn’t say anything but good things about this place." >>

Nice comments. Sralex used to say nice things about us as well, he even name checked us when they named that stand in his honour in reference to the 30k crowed that turned up for the Youth Cup final 1st leg. Can't hurt to have a good rapport with MUFC.

I thought Riley was referring to Nick Cox, ex Blades Academy boss, as opposed to Nicky Butt?

Agree, it's like that small group of clubs who seem to be able to loan Chelsea or Arsenal players that we never get a sniff of.

Fair play Nicky Butt! Clearly knows his football! I would hope that with the connections we have to Man U at Academy level through Nick Cox, that we will be able to see a few more youngsters coming our way over the coming seasons from Old Trafford. If the loan goes well for Riley then this could also be a factor for future loans, should Wilder wish to use the loan market.

(Pedantry alert) The guy could be a secret agent from South Barnsley. If you look at that last sentence, it actually means 'I don't know anyone who says anything good about Bramall Lane' . I assume he is so excited to join us that he got his grammar in a twist...

Weren't we linked with Nicky Butt after we were promoted in 2006, but the move didn't come about because we hadn't extended the wage bill to the levels Robson enjoyed a year later?

Could be but I thought it was Danny Murphy?

I don't know HOW ANYONE could make an innuendo about Butt and Cox at the academy!

He even liked us enough to play what was virtually his second X1 against West Ham 2007, after previously saying he'd put out a full strength team as he had respect for the others in the relegation fight.

I respect him for his achievements, but if he'd played his first team that day the Blades history over the past ten years might have been very different.

My concern on this apparent relationship with Nicky Butt and Nick Cox is the potential for two-way movement.

Cox knows our youngsters so well. IMO Reed would develop so well over there and other potential candidates have to be Brooks and Semple.

Fantasy? Hope so.

Our supporters are an incredible asset to the club. In particular all of you who follow them away from home. Wonder what value could be put upon this support if it was reflected as an asset on the balance sheet. Hope the powers that be appreciate our value.

Well, until the first error and everybody will be on his back but he doesn't need to know about that yet.

See what you are saying. But if these sort of moves are going to happen, then maybe some sort of reciprocal arrangement is better than just our lot going one way?

Agree but qualify that agreement. It depends whether we are winning or losing.

Fans with such tradition, tribal commitment, 'blind loyalty' like us are schizophrenic. We follow but we expect a certain level of return for our commitment.

We have certain expectations and can be absolutely damning if those expectations are not met.

Good and bad; sometimes an asset and sometimes a liability. That's us!!

Are we going to be givers or takers though?

Deep question. We are the minnows, we can be used or we can use them, on the other hand we can be megga beneficiaries if we pick up a number of lads who don't quite make the Man U level, like 98% don't.

Fletcher played at Barnsley last season but went elsewhere. Barnsley hardly benefited as he was not quite ready but they developed a 'development spirit' in their squad.

We actually need every hand up we can afford. Also need to be ready for the Championship when we get there. Barnsley have proved to be just that up to press.

Louis Reed, not good enough for our first team but ok for Man United? I know they're not exactly the force they used to be but I can't agree with this.

Good job ,Coady ,brown and Windass are no longer here or the teamsheet would be like a Jilly Cooper novel
