Basham man of the match x2

Fleck has been much better than Basham this season and that is undisputable. Where Bash has been slightly better today, Fleck has performed at that level and above all season. Much more consistent than Bash. Fact! (I think this is my catchphrase and that's a fact). Anywho don't get me wrong this is not a Bash Bashing so well done Chris we're sheff Utd we're top of the league FACT
Aye well, we'll have to disagree on that. He gave it away a time or three but wasn't alone in that folly, Fleck was just as guilty in the first half, he's not at the top of his game at the moment.
And yes, a better team may well have punished us today, we were ordinary in lots of departments for 70% of the game but have developed the knack of finding a way to win.
well said that blade

I thought Basham was our best player on Monday up to him going off, I was surprised when he was subbed. He gets far too much stick IMO. I think every team needs a player like him who will always give 100% for the cause and play when and where ever he's asked to.
for me chris basham is a latter day bob booker not always great makes mistakes not universally liked by lots of blades fans but always gives 100 per cent and every team needs a chris basham

I foolishly w not ta Coventry away last year and Fleck absolutely raped his skinny bottom all over the pitch. It was embarrassing Fact!

Agreed mate, and if he helps get us up he could even become a legend just like Booker.

Chris Basham is the new Michael Doyle.....

Post me the link to the 'Lambeth Walk' after Basham's scored in front of the CheatinAmmers end.

I will gladly get out the salt and pepper and my extensive set of Blades hats......gulp!

Bashan has some qualities, but I thought his inclusion in midfield today just showed how much we missed Duffy and Courts. When they came on we were better in every way.

I think freeman again had a shout at Mom. Made one and scored one, although perhaps not at his best defensively.

Get stuffed.
There is only room for one in the Basham fan club and that's me.

Bollocks! I've been singing his praises since long before it became fashionable. And I'm older than you so seniority rules!o_O

Seriously, this guy will be vying for player of the season with Billy. Thankfully it will be from a far greater electorate than the S24SU Victor Meldrews!

I would, you play the players who are on form. Also at Southend we will need to be solid.

Agree... Duffy got bullied at times against Northampton and Basham will get stuck in.

Southend & Rochdale were probably the most physical sides I've seen at the Lane for a long while.

We looked a more balanced side when coutts and Duffy came on today lafferty had his best game in a while today but all in all we don't look like losing even when we conceded

Best game?

JOC spent the match doing two jobs as lafferty did his usual act of being absent from the defensive end of the pitch.

if by best game you mean because he only spent 80 minutes of it on the pitch then i agree.

Erm, not sure what you mean with the salt and pepper stuff old boy!

Just to clarify, Basham = Doyle = Scapegoat.

He looks lost without someone to hold his hand. It was such a bad performance from the midfield up till Duffy coming on, we were so deep and left the front 2 isolated. That was due to both Scougs and Basham.

His defensive ability has never been in question but he isn't good enough to play a quick moving possession based team in midfield. He's fine when you're playing long ball and picking up scraps.

Defence or nowhere as it stands.

Fair play to him though pretty good today although Lavery was my MOM.

Forgot to mention O'Connell as another MOTM candidate. Thought he was very solid and barely put a foot wrong. Also contributed well down the left hand side.

Wright was pretty faultless as well.

Coutts certainly wasn't "dropped". Neither was Duffy. Both were left out because of the volume of games played recently. They are both integral to our success and the good football we play. There's no question both will be back for the next game, nor should there be.

I'm pleased to hear that Lavery played well and in fact had two assists. The lad is a good footballer.

Would you start him next weekend? for me no, defensive is strogner with Wright and can't really drop Fleck or Coutts

That shouldn't even be contemplated, and won't be by Tufty. Both are proper footballers and, with Duffy, have changed our team enormously for the better.

I'd agree, but in this match at least I thought our defence looked weaker than it has done for a while. Their young winger made our left side look quite vulnerable at times with decent runs and crosses and they had a couple of decent opportunities in the 2nd half. That is probably due to us having less control in midfield though and not retaining the ball quite so well.

...which, of course, has everything to do with Coutts and Duffy being absent. No doubt it changed when our proper midfield assembled?

That just reminded me of this character (the "old boy" bit), by the way, he means he will "eat his hat" if proved wrong, etc.

I don't mind Bash at the back, but is back up for midfield at best for me..If Coutts,Fleck and Duffy struggle to break down teams who park the bus at times,we'd be up the creek if we're expecting Bash to unlock the door..we wouldn't have the ball for a start.

Basham is a Jack of all trades master of none.

When all the Jacks are available and fit where does that leave Basham........

I really feel he is fortunate to play as much as he does ............. That said i agree that he is valuable to the squad.

Thanks Grappler and yes, I did mean I'd eat my hat. I absolutely loved Doyle taking the piss out of the CheatinAmmers with his Lambeth walk routine but somehow can't imagine Basham ever getting near a penalty.

Basham is a trier and presumably a great squad member but like Doyle, he isn't quite good enough. Noithing to do with scapegoats and there is no way I'd boo Basham but the fact remains we need better if we go up.

He has too many shortcomings, which is perhaps why people don't particularly like him.

Ball winning qualities, are not qualities with the ball at your feet. More than once today he won it and gave it straight back. He is very good at winning the ball but we need more than that now.

Watching Basham and Scougall trying to create today was painful after what we have been watching from Coutts and Duffy, it showed just how thin our squad is, Bury were moving the ball through the midfield line time and time again with ease today and against a better team we would have been punished.

yep - agree.

We gave Bury a chance today by not playing Coutts and Duffy.

We sort of got out of jail - if we continued to play the starting midfield as at Bury, better teams would turn us over. Fortunately CW got it right again and our substitutions worked out well. Bury had rather too much of the game in midfield for my liking - but all's well that end well.
