Kop leaders! Where have they gone?

Skins or crop tops with black donkey jackets with Blades badges and dockers, AKA the Shoreham Barmy Army, or even the Shoreham Republican Army. Defenders of the Kop against all comers.

".....We're barmy
wherever we go, we fear no foe,
cos we are the SRA...."

I remember Eskimo and his mate buttlap or something similar back in the mid to late 60s.
Anyone else remember that name, or am I loosing my marbles.
Nope, you're not! It was But lab, he was a pig but one of the Pond Street mob along with Eskimo. Ugly fucker too.

Shred gets my vote too

Talking of Eskimo I remember occasionally going to Hillsboro with him where we joined the opposition fans - one such match was Derby about 1969 (they brought loads of fans as they were on the up with Clough). We stood at the back of the kop singing "Derby and United"
Remember the winner being scored by David Ford 1-0
David Ford has never scored against us in a competitive game. The only time Wendy beat us by 1-0 in the 1960s was at the Lane in Sept 1967 (Ritchie the scorer)

I am trying to picture Eskimo and Willie Ward (I know a Bill Ward who is a chess player and I cannot picture him being a Kop leader! Mad Mick knows him). I must know them!

Anyone got a photo of Eskimo? Buttlab? Cooperman? Come on, post em if you've got em!

Don't know who's memory is playing tricks on them, mine or some of the posters on here. United did have a half decent crew in the 60's (Willie Ward and co) but in the 70's 1st division days Unitedites were run ragged by just about everyone. Away days were especially bad, anyone who remembers the carnage at Brum and Maine Road will know what I'm talking about despite having 7 or 8,000 fans on hand. If that wasn't bad enough the kop was regularly invaded and taken over by Leeds, Newcastle, Man U and so on. It wasn't until Mr Cowens and his mates arrived on the scene and put that one right a decade later. The SRA was just a line in a couple of bravado songs and anyone who knew Shred will know he was never a scrapper let alone a kop leader.

Some people need to get a grip. Sorry to disillusion some of the younger posters on here.

Remember Cooperman on a coach at Halifax. Cup match. Guthrie scored a few, think we won 4-2? They came on our coach after and Cooperman got us all up to kick fuck out of them. Ledge that guy.

Great day out that. Barry got done by those coppers on west gate, but the rest of the class made it to the game. Fuckin epic pal. After wards me and big Dave from bingley missed the coaches and spent the night touring the local brothels till the the mail train at 4 am. Great times

My time is a bit later but I don't remember the kop getting "taken", at least not for more than a few minutes. I started going in 78.

Got taken a few times in the early 70's. Man U and Leeds spring to mind. Serious rucking in those days. Birmingham had a fucking good go one night match as I recall.
Loads of bollox on John st post match most games. Spurs was a particularly good one.

The chant never to be heard again . You'll Never Take the Shoreham . You'll Never Take the Shoreham.

Early 70s when we came back up from the 2nd Division everyone wanted a pop at the Shoreham
Most of took the pain that went with it.

Yes well, I remember Leeds taking the Shoreham kop - it was a night match in the early 70's and I was most surprised to walk up them steps to the top of the kop and have my scarf snatched from around my neck and be given a fat lip. The Blades fans had been exiled to an area of the kop nearer towards where the South Stand is now - and the Leeds fans were rampant in their domination of our prime territory.

I remember Newcastle United fans having a good go too. They were present in big numbers and started throwing bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale (what else?) up at the roof of the kop so they smashed and showered us all in broken glass.

Oh them were they days eh? You just don't get the same quality of hooliganism at matches these days. I blame the tinterweb and mobile phones. All the violence is carefully orchestrated now and occurs in shopping precincts or motorway service stations or distant places. They've ruined it! Although I was never one to go to a match looking for a punch-up I used to enjoy watching it. It was fun! But now that spectacle has been taken away from us, for good it seems?

I know some of you would like to see standing areas back on the terraces. So would I - you can fit more folks into a ground if they are standing rather than sitting and it leads to a better atmosphere imo. You can have sways and crushes and fall down several steps when we score, I used to love that an' all. But most of all, I'd like to see a return to non-segregated areas for supporters.

So, none of this "Home supporters only" or "Away supporters only". Let the supporters go where they want! And take down them gates that cut off one part of the ground from another. I used to love walking from the Bramall lane end, past the cricket pavillion, and onto to the kop at half-time to change ends so I could be nearest the goal United were kicking into. Bring it back! Let the supporters be free to wander around the ground and stand, or sit, where they fancy! Let nature take it's natural course! Let's bring back turf wars on the terraces. It was more entertaining than the football sometimes.

Wasn't ManU and Leeds just sheer numbers and getting their early?

I'd bet a whole shiny penny it's Geetartwat. Only EVER posts after 23.00 when it's hammered and loves to brag about its amazing life/wife/salary/intelligence/house.

Reality = homeless cunt with a White Lightening addiction and an inflatable doll.

How did you know ?
