Walsall had been the last side to beat the Blades, doing so at the Bramall Lane (in the Checkatrade trophy) back in early October and they repeated the feat ending United’s 14 match unbeaten run. United blew a golden chance to go second and have now only picked up a point from two games they really should have won.

As they had done in so many previous games, the Blades dominated possession and chances but tonight as in previous games could not turn this into goals. A smash and grab goal from Bakayoko after a fine ball from Oztumer gave Walsall a lead and they defended it wilfully, putting bodies on the line, making clearances and restricting United to scrambled efforts on the whole. When the Blades did get in they were wasteful with Sharp missing a crucial penalty; his second successive spot kick miss and other chances also went begging.

Manager Wilder made one enforced change with Freeman in for Wright and Basham switching into the backline. They started again with Clarke and Sharp up front. Walsall had former Blades Cuvelier on the bench but had not won for 5 games.

In bitterly cold conditions, the game began in the same manner as the last few home games with the opponents banking up in front of United and making the Blades play through them. Coutts, Duffy and Fleck had a lot of the ball but the Blades struggled to create much with the play quite narrow. Clarke and Sharp had not had any clear sights early on with much off the play in midfield. After a bright 10 minutes, Walsall started to come into the game. They won two corner and then a free kick after Basham’s sloppy touch saw Ebanks Landell pull his man down. The kick was taken by Oztumer and was looped up onto the bar before bouncing away. Moore was well beaten and almost caught out.

Clarke then had his first opportunity but headed wide from a Duffy cross. Duffy then shot wide before Fleck had an effort off target. United had reasserted control and had their best chance when from a decent Fleck corner, O’Connell powered his header goalwards but Etheridge made a great reaction save and the ball was cleared on the line before a United player could react. Soon after Sharp had an effort block before Lafferty’s shot was deflected but Etheridge made a smart save low down. It had been the home side asking all the questions but against the run of play they were stunned when the visitors took the lead.

The tricky Oztumer picked up the ball and with no one near him he managed to knock a through ball into the path of BAKAYOKO. It ought to have been dealt with by United’s backline but Ebanks Landell was slow to react and the striker got in and toed it past Moore and into the net. It was such a straight forward pass and finish and very much route one. The Blades had been caught completely cold. Half time came a few minutes later.

After the break Oztumer’s shot was heading for the top corner but Moore made a good save tipping over. United were soon back on the attack and Sharp went down after getting caught up in a challenge but the referee waved play away. Great work from Freeman and Coutts saw the wing back away and send over a delightful cross that evaded everyone with Clarke too slow to react at the far post.

Etheridge was warned for timewasting but the referee oddly decided to stop the game and tell him but not book him. He had already warned him previously which drew the ire from the United crowd even further.

United continued to force the pressure but were struggling to break Walsall down and despite good patient passing, the final ball was awful. So many crosses were overplayed or hit the first man. From one good delivery, O’Connell ghosted in to head downwards and into the net but the referee saw some pushing by Ebanks Landell and disallowed the goal. It seemed a strange decision as not many Walsall players had appealed.

Sharp was sent through from Fleck and Etheridge blocked before Clarke went around the keeper but could not convert from a narrow angle as the ball was blocked. Coutts then had an effort blocked as United ramped it up in front of the Kop. Sharp’s clever flicked effort was just over from a decent through ball over the top from Fleck. Appeals for another spot kick for a hand ball this time were waved away when the players hand seemed to be up as the ball struck him.

Chapman was on for Basham and soon after United forced Etheridge into his first real save of the second half with Duffy’s clever free kick almost catching him out.

Lavery came on for Lafferty as United now had almost a front 5 as they piled on the pressure as the game entered the final 10 minutes. Clarke headed wide as it was attack v defence but United could not get the vital breakthrough.

A shot came in from Fleck and again loud shouts went up for a penalty kick. Finally; after giving United little all game, the referee deemed it had struck a Walsall players hand and gave the penalty kick.

Sharp took it but as in the last game at the Lane; it was a really poor effort. He hit it almost down the middle again and the keeper saved it easily, holding the ball.

United kept coming despite this huge disappointment. An O’Connell header looped just over and then as the game entered five minutes additional stoppage time; from a great Chapman cross Sharp bundled home. It seemed as if the equaliser had come but the referee deemed the United skipper had used his hand to convert.

Freeman then had a shot at the keeper and Moore came up for a corner but Sharp could not turn goalwards from Clarke’s knock down. Soon after another wasted cross was taken by the excellent Etheridge and full time came moments later. A game United will wonder how they did not win let along fail to even get a point but once again inability to be ruthless in the final third and take chances came back to haunt a side that has controlled a game once again almost from start to finish.

United – Really disappointing both in terms of the result and the performance. Do not get me wrong we were not awful. Nowhere near. Compared to last season it is still night and day. Once again we controlled a game almost from start to finish but this time a team did not have 9 men and scored a goal. They had two banks of players and we struggled to break them down. Yes, we had 20+ shots again. Yes, we had umpteen corners and crossing chances but overall I have to say how many clear-cut chances did we have? How many saves did the keeper make? I reckon the O’Connell one first half and then maybe the Duffy shot second half. We got into so many good positions and then just could not make the right pass or cross and it just petered out or went behind the goal or into the keeper’s hands.

Outside of the couple of efforts I am struggling for shots that actually really tested him. May seem daft as we missed a penalty (this did not test him!) and had 2 disallowed but for all the good play in area of pitch the overall lack of quality in the final third showed. We could have the ball as much as we wanted, if we cannot play that killer ball or make the right cross/pass to lead to chances we will have a lot of games like that this season. We still had enough chances to score probably but for the amount of play/possession we had, we were incredibly wasteful and kind of looked clueless when we got in the last third. Eventually another awful cross came over. When we played it quickly and got players wide with quick one twos we did get in but too often aimless balls were played. Sharp and Clarke (Clarke will get all critics but Sharp was as bad) are both so static. Without pace and movement up top we will struggle to break teams down as we have to play killer pass/ball. We have no pace and we had little width. The last few games have been like those training ground exercises of defence v attack and overall the defence has won most of the contests really.

Maybe it was coming after we had struggled past Shrewsbury and Bury with 9 men each and then were pegged back at the Valley. Wilder had been quite critical of the lack of ruthlessness but tonight we saw more of the same. Did we do enough to draw/win the game? Probably but in the last third the quality was lacking badly. We got into great position time after time but wasted crosses, through balls and when we got it into a decent position were wasteful.

Sure we had two goals disallowed and missed a penalty and on another night could have had another penalty but despite this for all the ball we had, we did not create lots of clear cut chances. The issue was we either overplayed or when we got it into good areas, the final ball was woeful. We hit the first man, lobbed it to the keeper and sent it behind the goal. The odd decent ball that came in we had little chance as Sharp and Clarke were miles apart and no midfielders were supporting. The strikers also were not really moving and they looked very still at times. So, it was a combination of poor final ball and little to hit at times.

We did have most of the ball and had so many more chances but overall it was all a bit desperate I felt towards the end more than good play that led to knock downs and a flurry of better chances. However, in overall play we lack quality when it matters and lack penetration/pace. We are a very slow side and rely on pin point passing / play. Luckily Coutts and Fleck along with Duffy have shown real ability to do this but we lack that movement up top. I am not sure either Clarke/Sharp are doing enough at the moment for me. They are not scoring and when they are getting chances are missing them. Sadly with Done and Lavery not exactly looking any better options it means we have a quandary up this end of the pitch.

At the back we had little to do but Basham and Ebanks Landell made a mess of the few things we did have to deal with and of course led to one goal and nearly another couple. For all play we had, they hit the bar and forced one of the best saves of the night from the long shot. They had as many ‘good’efforts on goal as us for all our play.

Really disappointing to get in a good position and then toss away 5 points really in the last few games. I feel like we will have more games like this down at the Lane. If we do not start showing better play in the final third whether it be crosses/final ball or finishing, we will have many more frustrating games as teams now have the blueprint. They defend deep knowing we have no pace, compress the play and make us play through them. We have struggled do this. However, for all this another night one of the disallowed ones is given, we score a penalty and we still should win the game but for three games to go in a similar fashion is a bit of a concern despite the great run.

We go again but we now have nearly 10 days till next home game. It is crucial we now try and build another run. The only positive from tonight; if you can actually say this is that Ebanks Landell was garbage and may end up staying here as Lambert will not have been impressed at all.

Walsall – Seem to be a big of a bogey side this season winning twice at the Lane. They had not won for 5 games and were not in great form so it was of course a surprise they won tonight. They were in the game for a spell in the first half and had a decent free kick. However, when the goal came out of the blue. It was well made and taken but should have been avoided. After this it was back to the walls stuff. They timewasted, spoiled and did every trick in the book but we should be able to overcome this. The longer the game went, the deeper they sat and they kept throwing men in front of the ball. They had a lot of run of the ball and some fortune when blocks or crosses fell kindly but the keeper and centre backs played well. They will say they fought hard for the win but it was a real smash and grab. They play another 4 or 5 games likes that and they will lost most of them. It was one of those nights really where things went for them helped by a referee who certainly could not be accused of being a homer.

Manager John Whitney took over after the excellent work from his predecessor Dean Smith (Sean O’Driscoll’s reign did not quite work out) but the yearly sales that seem to take place means the squad does not have the quality it once had. Even since last year they have lost key men such as Bradshaw and Sawyers and it was going to be hard to sustain another play off campaign. They have done well to be in and around the top 6 the last few years but this year was always going to be mid table at best I felt. If they finish there they will do well. They have a few decent players but their team spirit and work ethic may be their greatest quality and if they can replicate effort tonight they will be alright. Not sure they have enough quality to get near the top 6 but in this league, anyone can put a run together.

Opponent man of the match : The referee?! No probably Erhun Oztumer. Surprised Peterborough let him go in the summer as he has always shown to be a clever little player. Hit the bar, made the goal and had their other good effort well saved. The centre backs played well throwing bodies in the way and the keeper took a lot of routine crosses but in overall play he only made one really good save. Other efforts including the penalty were routine.

Opponent Weak link : Not really sure there was a weak link. They all put a graft in and although they had little of the ball, they worked hard to get a result.

SUFC Player Ratings –

Moore 7/10 – Little chance with the goal. Defence were cut open and left exposed. Nearly surprised by the free kick. Made one excellent save from the same player second half.

Freeman 7/10 – Decent in some things, poor in others. Defensively fine. He got up and down but his touch was erratic with some poor bits of passing/control. He put two crosses over the bar and then sent a beauty over after a one two. Just a bit sloppy at times.

Lafferty 5.5/10 – He is not convincing me really. He is very one footed and when he gets it he is quite wasteful. He is not an out and out wide man (he comes inside constantly and congests the play) but is not a ball playing midfielder. A bits and pieces player but not really sure what he does offer? He is steady sure but at home could we play a Chapman down here and really get behind teams? He does not offer much from an attacking sense for me.

Ebanks Landell 5/10 – Not a great night. He was a big reason goal went in. He was caught ball watching and the player got in. He nearly lost him a few other occasions. Really sloppy on the ball and looked very leaden footed. Lambert will not have been impressed. His worst performance in an SUFC shirt. Wright not playing probably did not help him as it does not work him being the middle one of the three.

O’Connell 7.5/10- Thought he was very good and our best defender by quite a bit. Did not hide, got on the ball and tried his best to carry it forward. Had three decent headed efforts and looked a threat when going forward. Strong in the challenge and committed. He is improving every week and is a much better player than Basham for me.

Basham 5.5/10 – Thought he showed what he is. An honest trier and did some decent things but someone who is technically inept sadly and on the ball shows how poor he is. One cross he sent behind the goal and then another he hit the first man. He takes an age to do simple things and needs 4 or 5 touches to execute something he should do in 1 or 2 touches. Slows our play right down when it goes to him. Also for a 6 footer gets beaten in the air a lot or jumps so early that puts him out of the play. We have some decent ball players in the side and he stands out like a sore thumb for me in his limitations. He may try hard but is that enough?

Fleck 7.5/10 – Looked good for most of the game. Got on it, moved it on and showed some lively touches. Played some good balls forward when he could and linked well with Coutts and Duffy as we controlled the game in this area. Not helped by lack of movement up top or wide and had to play almost the killer ball to get us in. Had to drive with the ball and try ambitious shots as his options in front were so limited.

Coutts 6.5/10 – Mixed bag. Like Fleck got on the ball and tried to make things happen but did not quite work for him tonight. Some of his crossing and passing was off and I felt despite doing some neat things he was also careless. A few over played balls or give aways tonight and he just did not quite seem at level he has been. Still most things go through him and thus inevitable he will not see every pass come off. He again not helped by static strikers.

Duffy 8/10 – Our best player. Prompted and probed. Got on the ball and got into little pockets. He caused them all sorts of problems. He was the one running on ad trying to get behind. He was the one making the final pass. He had some of our better crosses/balls all game and I felt if anything would happen it would be through him. Faded a bit second half but Wilder put him wide and this did not help as we tried to accommodate others and ended up 4-4-2. I have been a bit sceptical of him I admit but when he has not played recently and how he played tonight has made me eat my words as he was excellent.

Clarke 5/10 – He will get blamed on many message boards/forums and phone ins for our defeat I am sure as it seems to be the thing to make him a scapegoat when we do not do very well even though he has contributed to wins at Chesterfield and v Bury with some good play. However tonight he was poor. He looked languid and lazy and only came to life when he ran back to win one tackle and then nearly got round the keeper second half. The rest of the game he was static and he was miles off Sharp. When crosses come in he is too busy wrestling with defenders rather than trying to make space. He does not really look like scoring and his partnership with Sharp is not really working. The service from wide was poor with few decent crosses. He won a few knocks downs and tried to link but more with others than Sharp. At the moment, he is best used as an option off the bench for me.

Sharp 5/10 – He was not much better than Clarke in that the movement was not there. Both seemed very slow to move to balls and did not get close together (as much his fault as Clarke). First half he took an age to get 2 or 3 shots away taking way too many touches. Second half he was not really in the game and I felt he ended up coming out wide instead of staying in the middle. He did not get on the end of the few half decent balls but granted the crossing was mostly awful. Then had one chance but keeper saved as he tried to get through before having the penalty. It was an awful spot kick. He never puts them in the corner, always they are in the middle or just to the keepers side. He needs to be taken off them now, leading scorer or not as they are easy to read and he is not learning sadly. Todays was like a back pass and was easily saved (held not even pushed away!). He then had a goal chalked off. It was hard to tell really but if he did hand ball it, this coupled with a dive earlier and he is fortunate not to get at least one yellow card. If he is not scoring Sharp is not offering much. Interesting that Charlton fans enthused about our play but said our slow/old strikers would cost us games. We urgently need some pace/movement up top as if they do not score, then not sure what they offer?

Chapman – Made a difference. A few crosses went awry but he has some quality on the ball and seems to make things happen. His cross at the end for the disallowed goal was a great one and deserved to be finished. He would get a start for me. Wilder keeps saying we are wasting crosses/chances so he has to give someone else a chance. 20 + chances a game and we are not scoring so something has to give.

Lavery – Came on but did not really do much. Cannot remember him touching it outside of one run down the left when he held it up and knocked it back.

Manager – Wilder 5/10 – It is a defeat and the end of the run. Good to see him rallying the side at the end. I think he knows we have blown two games now. Hammering them now won’t change that. We need to see more quality in the final third. We are controlling games but not creating clear chances or enough for the possession we have. I think he will seriously look at this in January if we don’t change and as experience as they are Clarke and Sharp, both need to improve on the last 2 or 3 games. If we have as much possession though ad control games like we have, we will win a lot of games but we have to be cuter in the last third and our quality has to be better when we get there. If it is not then it does not matter how much we have of the ball behind there as we are not hurting teams. The last three home games have almost been identical and we have really struggled to break teams down and score. When we play better teams it may be easier in this regard but as today showed the defence is not as tight as we maybe thought as one simple ball through and they scored.

Today I felt Clarke and Sharp was not working and he should have changed it at half time (or at the start for me). Done has his critics but works hard and moves off the ball. Those two are way too static. The crossing was also poor and he ought to have been telling the wing backs to hog the touchlines. It was all too narrow and meant we had to play precise balls. Walsall just pressed the play and made us go through them. It was only the helter skelter stuff at the end when we nearly got a goal or two. This was more sheer effort and weight of balls going in than good play.

Ref – Darren England. He was another who wanted to be the star of the show. He penalised throws in from the wrong spot or free kicks but let the keeper time waste all game (kept telling him and stopping it but did nothing about it). He disallowed two goals; hard to tell but the first there seemed little wrong. The second I could not see. Wilder says it went in off his chest but others say he did handle it. Replays show that there may have been some hand on it so fair dos The fact he somehow could not wait to give it summed it up. He seemed desperate to stop us scoring! That may sound ridiculous but the way it seemed. He was certainly not a homer! The penalty he had to give; seemed blatant after 2 or 3 others he could have given (another for handball seemed clear to me and they kept throwing their hands up at shots). He continued to strut about and generally want the game all to be about him but overall, he was weak and petty in all the wrong ways. He gave us one free kick in the first half hour. Every 50/50 he game to them and seemed to be doing his best to help them. Those who read my reports know I am pretty fair and balanced when it comes to refs and call it as I see it. I very rarely if ever accuse a ref of being anti United (if anything go other way more so) but he really did not help us one bit tonight and I felt the more irate the crowd got the more he loved giving things against us. Maybe it just felt like that and he was not as bad as I thought but felt we got little from him really.

Crowd – Frustrating night. Kept with them and knew they were doing their best. Was not effort that did us but poor final ball and lack of quality in final third. Crowd dropped a bit from last week but another week nearer to Xmas and it was extremely cold. Walsall only brought maybe 2-300 but not surprising considering the game was re-arranged and was a cold Tuesday night in late November but those that went will of course been glad to get another win at the Lane.

Should say for all praise giving Duffy and Fleck - their overplay saw us lose ball in first place on goal. Tried a daft one two that did not come off. After this noone closed down and Ebanks Landell was ball watching but needed to give some balance when affording blame.

if billy wasn't a blade he would be getting crucified by now
chapman has to start the next game he is a threat.. coutts is the new ray wilkins every ball is square, he kills our counterattacks
lafferty is crap.. he hides as he doesn't want the ball he kicks it anywhere.. freeman was awful

Shocked by this result.

Went out to play chess and just got back.

Sounds like we let chances slip away again. We need to be more ruthless and clinical in front of goal.

Some have asked what Matty Done gives us; the answer should be obvious to anyone at the Lane tonight. The opposition worked their socks off and closed us down to nick all 3 points. Clark was easy to close out; so was Billy - not mobile enough. We desperately needed more pace and width. Considering we often had 3 or 4 at the back looking at each other wondering how to earn their coin it's a wonder we still managed to dominate such determined opposition. Criticise Bash for his limitations if you like folks, but at least he got forward and tried to make things happen. As for Billy as a penalty-taker, God knows what the likes of Peter Duffield and even Kenworthy think of his "technique" - it's a wonder he's managed 7 of 9 to be honest; mind you - goalies always used to dive left or right till some of them realised the best tactic was simply to stand still and wait for the ball to come to them!

No! If Billy wasn't a Blade and he'd scored a dozen goals he'd get away with murder.

It's the fact that he IS a Blade that he gets crucified as soon as he stops scoring, whilst after almost half a season, the rest of our 'strikers' who have managed just a couple of goals between them all season sit in the corner just glad to be under the fans' radar.

Sharp isn't the problem even though he scores in fits and starts. It's finding another striker who can at least contribute a reasonable total towards the cause. Anybody who scores half as many goals as Sharp in the second half will be a massive boost, but who will that be?

All we had to do to stop their goal was invite Oztumer to play the simple pass to the right - to a centre half playing wing back who was marked and wouldn't have gone anywhere. We know what Oztumer can do, he's their only real threat, and we allowed him to run forward and pick his pass. But it still should've been dealt with better, piss poor for three centre halves to get beaten like that.

Another team who come to the Lane, and put on their performance of the season.

They would have died for the cause, last ditch tackles, blocks, spilling blood for the team.

Last time out away, they rolled over and let Rochdale tickle their tummy`s to the tune of 4-0.

Shows what Utd must overcome if we are to get out of this division, and the importance of the first goal.

Last night further highlighted what a major player JW is to the team. Bizarre when we say the good thing about EEls performance, with Lambert watching, was that he was garbage so will probably stay, but I know what he meant.

Perfect 10 for Deadbat. Bang on assessment.

A bloke at the back of the kop was blaming Moore for the goal saying he should have come out, cleaned all three players out and headed it clear. The man is an imbecile.

He also said we needed a billy whitehurst in the team. Quite what for I don't know.

On most other days we would have won comfortably. I'm not blaming anyone. I think it was one of those days. We camped in their half, had pressure we could only have dreamed of over the last two years but were unlucky in that the defence should have stopped their goal and we should have scored at least one.

Don't panic!

Thoughts on last night. Well, disappointing & not disappointing at the same time if that’s possible. Obviously not happy with the result but the performance in general wasn’t bad.
We do seem to have at least one mistake in us at the back which can give away a soft goal but who doesn’t ? It’s the final third, as we all can see, where we’re letting ourselves down at the moment & we’re not capitalising on our dominance of play. Despite this we are still creating chances….two goals disallowed and a rather poor penalty miss amongst others. Teams are coming to The Lane with the sole intention of getting a point & are making it very difficult for us to break them down, which they’re entitled to do & we can’t expect anyone to roll over for us. As the season goes on though some of these teams will need points & will have to come out & play. As I’ve mentioned before, we look at our best breaking out, counter attacking & moving the ball quickly forwards.

Not sure what the answer is up front. We have struggled in the last three home matches to find the net but I think expectations for some have shot up since our poor start to the season and especially so after our purple patch when we were banging goals in for fun. Don’t forget, this team has only been together a few months.
Not sure how Clarke fits in with what we’re trying to do though. (At least Gob Almighty sitting behind me has found a new scapegoat, I was starting to get a bit worried for him recently).Maybe we’ll see more from him as & when he gets match fit ? For me, despite his disappointing goals return I prefer to see Done start. The amount of running and work he does is tremendous & he pulls defenders all over the park to places they don’t want to be resulting in space for others to exploit….. if only they would.
In Fleck,Duffy & Coutts we have probably three of the best midfielders in the league & we’d have been happy with just one of them performing like they are last season. The only slight criticism I have is that we need to move the ball forward quicker at times, and delivery in to the box out wide needs to be better.
No panic from me (yet) seen enough of United over the years to know not to get carried away. I firmly believe we will come good again, sounds odd to say after one defeat in sixteen, but I think you understand what I mean

I know a lot of this is “stating the bleeding obvious” but for me, if we’re within touching distance (6 points) or better of the top two come New Years Day it’s game on this season.

I know it can be hard to be patient after some of the utter rubbish we’ve all put up with over the last few seasons but CW and his team look to me like they know what they’re doing.

I don't think it's about panicking, it's the obvious to all deficiencies in attack and defense. We have 75% of the ball upfront but can't score and on the odd occasion the opponents break we can't deal with it. This was definitely coming.

Thanks for the great report deadbat, don't know how you manage to follow things in such a detailed manner.

Your write ups are a great read so thanks for making the time and effort to do them.

A bloke at the back of the kop was blaming Moore for the goal saying he should have come out, cleaned all three players out and headed it clear. The man is an imbecile.

EEL's fault to begin with but I thought Moor could have been more assertive and come out faster to welly it.

I sit directly behind the goal and Moore was definitely slow to come out so for that reason I wouldn't have given him 7/10.

A disappointing evening, but I saw nothing wrong with either disallowed goal.

I thought Basham was just as much to blame for the goal. He should have got round and helped rather than just ease off and pass on responsibility.

In future games, we might as well play Chapman in the wing back position. Teams are going to camp in the own half and defend, hoping they snatch something on the break or from a set piece. Chapman obviously has more quality in the final third than either of our current wing backs. Also, surprised Hussey hasn't be given a go off the bench. He's well known for his crossing ability, which we have struggled with recently.

Great write-up and impressive details, Deadbat. Do you take notes during the game?

Key attacking positions in this week's ratings by Deadbat:

Coutts 6.5 Fleck 7.5
Freeman 7 Lafferty 5.5
Duffy 8
Sharp 5 Clark 5

Chapman ? but did well.
Lavery poor.

When the player in the 'No.10' role plays so well it puts the spotlight on the strikers and the wide men in particular.

Referee is from Barnsley.

Thanks for the report. It was 15 league games unbeaten, not 14. Amazing to think the last defeat until last night was August 20. It had to end some time.

Great report as ever. I look for your reports and ignore the Stir's and Sky's. First match I have missed since the beginning of September, I must have jinxed us.:( Bad news is I miss the Swindon home game too so I hope its nowt to do with me.

I thought we would miss JW - he holds the defence together. I was never a Paul Madeley fan,but I'd have him any day over Basham, who seems to be being played in every position bar the goalie. Totally agree with you about Lafferty and we need a RWB, at least for cover.

A bloke at the back of the kop was blaming Moore for the goal saying he should have come out, cleaned all three players out and headed it clear. The man is an imbecile.

Must admit at the time I was thinking that he should have come for it, but having seen the replay it had to be the defence dealing with that. Great ball over the top from Oztumer, quality player too by the way. But at this level we shouldn't be getting caught out by a simple ball over the top.

Thanks for taking the time to put together these comprehensive reports, that are much appreciated by me.

Last night was like recent previous seasons where the visitors could get the points by being reasonably competent in defence and then capitalising on our inevitable mistake. Also, Sharp's penalty bore a striking similarity to the infamous Don Givens penalty v Walsall.

Maybe it just felt like that and he was not as bad as I thought but felt we got little from him really.
.

Agree wholeheartedly that it felt as if the ref was absolutely determined to see a certain outcome. Reminded of of Keith Stroud in the 2-2 draw with Brentford a few years back. The situation with their keeper and the time wasting (did it right from his first goal kick at 0-0) was beyond ridiculous. As you say, he had no choice but to give the penalty and even then didn’t book their lad for a diving save. If Sharp did dive, he should have been booked. If not, that was a penalty too. If he deliberately handled it into the net, he should have been booked. If not, it was a goal. Just felt as if the ref didn’t know the rules and was making it up as he went along. Then there was his pettiness on free kicks and throw ins. He was determined we couldn’t take a quick free kick all game. He slowed tha game down almost as much as that cheating twat of a ‘keeper. 5 minutes injury time at the end was a joke. It should have been about 20 in which time we could have had another couple of goals turned round for imaginary reasons. Thoroughly frustrating.

I won’t be too critical of the team. Thought Coutts and EEL had real off days as they’ve been much better through our run. Thought Duffy was excellent and Fleck was his usual impressive self. I agree the front 2 don’t seem to work together. I wasn’t against giving it a go now we have a better system and are playing better but I reckon it’s time to go back to Done and Sharp for now (even though, if anything, Sharp was the worse of the 2 last night). In January, I think we need another striker to play alongside Billy. My preference is Evans as I think he would have probably scored about 5 or 6 over the course of the last 3 home games. I’d be happy with one of Akinde or Bogle though to vary our attacking play.

I don’t think we’d have conceded the goal we did with Jake Wright playing the sweeper role. He’s there because even though he’s not as physically imposing or athletic as the likes of EEL, Bash and O’Connell, his concentration levels are excellent.

Lastly, surely now, we have to take Billy off penalties. I think I would have a better conversion ratio than he has.

Seriously, Darren England the referee is from Barnsley and has worked for Barnsley FC in his time.

What's going on? How can that happen?

I don't think it's about panicking, it's the obvious to all deficiencies in attack and defense. We have 75% of the ball upfront but can't score and on the odd occasion the opponents break we can't deal with it. This was definitely coming.
'panicking' weirdest word ever ,where does the K come from , I suppose it would sound panissing without it.
