This hits the nail on the head. Complete negligence/lunacy/incompetence by Clough/Brannigan to spend the club's money like this. This has been the problem over the reign of Clough and then Adkins signing the wrong players (and I include Brayford in this) for big fees/wages. Not surprising the board have now said enough is enough and rightly so. At least Clough brought some money in with the two Cup runs; plus Coutts and Freeman have come good but I bet they are on very high wages by L1 standards. He also signed Che who we cashed in on but Adkins....!!! Sanity has now prevailed. We are spending less and the results (so far anyway) are vastly better.
Why didn't the board implement a wage structure and transfer fee cap when Clough took over? Or have policies on signing players? That's what successful clubs do.
As culpable as Clough and Brannigan were, someone above them had to approve all this.

It's the 3 year deal on what turns out to be enormous wages that's the real killer. If we'd got him cheaply, then you might accept the gamble. But not us, we get him on a wage that no sane club in the country would match, ensuring we have to endure the full extent of him paid on his back at our expense.

Thank god those days seem to be over.

But similar days are still here - Leon Clarke , old guy , long contract , big wages , out injured ..............

Leon Clarke has become the exception, not the norm.

And I might be mistaken, but he's not been an injury prone player in his career, has he?

He'll be on a third of Wallace's wages, of that I'm sure.

At 32 the age is pushing it. But overall, the sea change in philosophy is crystal clear.

Just wait until he comes back in time for the play off final and bags an injury time winner off the bench and gets a 3 year extension

Already reserved that position with the bookies on Lavery.

His good wage at Bury brought the transfer fee down to a comical amount.

Yes , I accept the change in philosophy , but I suppose I am concerned to see Clarke back in the matchday squad because I believe we are light up front the minute that anything happens to Billy

Can we not terminate Wallace' contract under non performance and let insurance sort it? I guess the club have looked at that but then I don't trust those in authority to possess a shared braincell.
Re Clarke. He will play a big role this season. Not habitually injured and with a great track record at this level.

I was disappointed that we signed someone who (a) is older than Billy Sharp and (b) moves around more than anyone in British football on a 3 year deal, but I agree the injury is bad luck. Clarke has no injury history really. That wasn't a deal breaking the "don't sign crocks" rule.

I have no idea why, but I thought I’d have a quick look at Wallace’s career low lights and my god there’s been a few! Is this guy just purely unlucky or is there a more fundamental issue:

• Everton 2009 - He was side-lined that year with a double hernia problem that subsequently kept him out of action until 2010

• Bury (Loan) 2010 - Wallace made no further appearances for Bury during his one-month loan spell due to the adverse weather conditions that resulted in a spate of postponements

• Shrewsbury (Loan) 2011 - Wallace made his debut for Shrewsbury in a 2–0 victory at Dagenham & Redbridge two days after joining the club, although was sent off after just 25 minutes for a "lunge" on Dagenham's Jon Nurse.[17] As a result of the red card, Wallace missed Shrewsbury's three next games

• Shrewsbury (Loan) 2011 - "Wallace hasn't had the best time here – he's only played about 40 minutes in his two months with us due to not being able to play in the FA Cup, suspension and injuries. I want him to get back to Everton get his injury cleared up, and we'll take it on from there". (Graham Turner)

• Stevenage (Loan) 2012 - Wallace's loan spell at Stevenage was cancelled by mutual consent on two weeks later, with the player having made no first-team appearances for the club

• Blades – 2014 – Just 7 league starts to date due to constant injury problems.

• Shrewsbury (Loan) 2016 - He was side-lined for a lengthy period after picking up a knee injury in a league match against Southend United the following month.

In a career that spans over 7 years, Wallace has made just 78 league starts, 35 of which were during 1 season with Tranmere. It seems that 6 of his 7 seasons have been blighted by injury or absence.

And yet we gave him a three year deal on a huge salary.

More chance of William Wallace playing for us than James.

They don't even bother asking the club about him during interviews now.

I don't think he's finished 24 stoll has time to get his career going again.may not be with us but some club will give him the opportunity

Not sure myself Finlay, it could be that by carrying on, he's saving up further grief later in life. Good footballer in there somewhere, the spirit might be willing but the flesh seems weak. I think he's about done, he'll be gutted about that.

And I think it's the other way round. Not much wrong with the flesh but the spirit isn't willing.

He would fit our current style superbly well too. Fell sorry for him.
He has had a tough time and both mentally and physically, he must be at the end of his tether. He is a really good footballer and the frustration he must be suffering beggars belief.
Adkins tried a different way ( books) and that didn't work..
A s Crab said his body may not be up to it ( strange really as he looks a fine specimen for a footballer) as for
future damage to his body !! that can't be an issue as doctor s would have advised him to retire.
Maybe his best way forward would a
sports psychologist, either way it's a dam shame for such talent to go to waste.

He always looked like a good, all round footballer, on the few times I saw him play. The problem is, I only saw him play a few times.

I'm still hopeful he'll come good.
I mean plenty of football experts on here and other fans forums said he would be a better signing than Coady.

If this was the Pigs, we'd be quite rightly laughing our heads off - yet some on here don't see what we've done wrong here.

At least Wilder has finally started doing something about the daft contracts we have been giving players over the last 9 years or so.
