Matt Done

For his lack of natural finishing, Done does stretch the play and we will gain space in the middle for Coutts, Fleck and Duffy to work in. It would be harder for them to get the space if the game was condensed in the middle.
Scougall tended to drop a bit deeper when he played against MK and although we played a different formation against them, we ended up with less space in the middle of the park to work in.

I'm loving it. The good things that are happening have, happily, absolutely nothing to do with Bladey origins and everything to do with ability (always the prime objective), athleticism, purpose and organisation.

Absolutely nothing to do with Bladey origins?

You've re-written history on that one. CW is a Blade and proud of it and often mentions the spirit under Harry. Where do you think the 'purpose' comes from?

I take your point on Morgs, who will never make a decent coach, but please don't try to airbrush out CW's Bladey Blade credentials, as it is those that make him the man he is.

Scoring a goal self-evidently impacts on a game. Nothing can equal it, given that it is the very object of the exercise. I cant think of many games, save his early poor form, when Sharp hasn't had such an impact. I entirely disagree about Done. Much of his tireless, committed chasing is futile and his goal-scoring conspicuous by its absence. Scoogs has had twice the 'impact' in half the games.

Given you think Done isn't very good and Scoogs has "had twice the impact in half the games" why do you think CW keeps picking Done to start?

hmmm ...... Though out the 90 minutes Done does the harder, grittier work that is undervalued in football, Sharp is a finisher sure but he has plenty of games where he doesn't impact the game at all.

Sharp also holds the ball up better, links better in short passing moves with others, has a better first touch, is stronger and plays with his head up. Sharp is a better all round footballer but Done does a lot of ugly work for the team. I’m not knocking him at all as I appreciate what he brings. But Sharp is a better player and would be missed more if he was out.

Can we forget who is scoring and who is not as it doesn't seem to matter when people are chucking Sharp under the bus.

Done improves the team with the work he does. If you swapped that for Clarke then I doubt you would get the same results week in week out

If it's not broken...

I think it’s up to Clarke to prove you wrong. As it stands, as you say, it’s not broken. But Clarke will get chances off the bench and in the cup and if he continues to take them as well as he did on Sunday, he might displace Done eventually. No need to rush into it whilst all is going well though.

No it isn't. Bladey bollocks I'm afraid. Don't try to airbrush 'Harry's grotesque alehouse football. It is that that makes him the redundant manager he has been for a long time. Thank Pele that Tufty, who often mentions "the right way" realises that. Sorry, some things just don't point in the direction you want them to...

How few goals would you tolerate from Runaround Done before you acknowledge the stark reality?

Leon is a far better player and a significant improvement on Natt. Their respective performances on Sunday give us a hint.

Both players are different so the team will change how it plays

Can you please define "Bladey" for me? I think that as the majority of contributors seem to express the opinion that CW "gets it" and maintain "we have got our club back".Is this the "Bladeyness" that they describe? If it is then the attitude that they seem to describe is what they and I may consider to be the essence of being a Blade or "Bladey". That consists of working hard and giving all in every game whether it be good enough or not, never giving up and playing with scant regard to the alleged strengths of the opposition but seeking to dominate. That may be achieved with your view of what is good football or even achieved with a different (to you imperfect and ugly) version of the game. Its all about attitude in my view.

I was sat just behind CW at the game and all he shouted for ninety minutes was 'gerrit int fucker mixer' and 'go big'. Can we not knock it?

After January, at the latest, he won't.

Come on Pinchy. Changing your tune? Take the bet. Take the bet. Tell you what. I'll even double it and split it between you personally and the Children's Hospital. I maintain Done will be with us next season on the books not sold or loaned before the first game of the season. Do you have some knowledge about his intentions in January? Or is your point that a signing in January of some random Welshman or other will mean he is relegated to the bench for a long spell? I think we should be told of your ITK credentials in this matter!

He won't like the idea of you helping sick children from Sheffield, far too parochial.

Yes but I agree with you. I say he won't be in the first XI.

Here's the team we put out against Shrewsbury when they tore us apart last year.

25 Long
2 Freeman
6 Basham
15 Collins
3 Harris
22 Reed
11 Baxter
35 Hammond
29 Adams
18 Sammon
10 Sharp

Just as a crude measure of what Wilder has achieved, these are the obvious improvements based on yesterday's XI:

Moore > Long
EEL > Collins
Lafferty > Harris
Fleck > Reed
Coutts > Hammond
Duffy > Adams
Done > Sammon

Wright and Baxter aren't really in comparable positions, but I know who I'd rather have lining up alongside me. No pun intended....

Genuinely made me shiver looking at that team. Really enjoyed reading this thread, I think it's an interesting view of how different fans see things. FWIW my view is that Done adds a lot of value off the ball and that is why he's straight back in as many others have said. Another point I'd make is that if Done is the weakest link in this team that is now 12 unbeaten, then we aren't in too bad shape. Good to see Clarke back and scoring as well.

UTB

Because he will rightly have been replaced by then. Very likely from within (Leon) or by a new recruit. He ain't good enough, mate and Tufty ain't daft!

Ok Lets make it interesting. I am renowned for my suicidal bets as I am with my suicidal choice of shot at golf.

I think there are 22 games to play from January 2017. I believe that Matt Done will start at least 10 of them unless injured. I think that is a very very fair bet. If you are correct he won't get near that. Not that I completely disagree with your assessment Pinchy but I am of the if it aint broke don't fix it persuasion and just like your bete noire, he has his uses for now.

Happily Tufty's view of good football is the same as mine and almost every professional involved in the game.

When he and the rest of them speak of the "right way" or "playing football" or "get it down and play" they are not including that good old S2 favourite "Hoof it and Hope". They do not envisage a giant goalie named Lurch marching to the half-way line and launching the ball long, hard and high, way over the heads of artisan "midfielders", in search of two unskilled lighthouses lurking near the opposition penalty area.

They speak, of course, of proper football. The sort that wins leagues and trophies and has done for decades. The sort that gets spectators up off their seats applauding. The sort that's a bit more than a supercharged version of what you and I could do on a Sunday morning. The football that all the greats played and Charlie Hughes, Dave Bassett, Vinnie Jones and Wally Downes, Wally Fucking Downes couldn't.

Why anyone would want something else is a mystery to all except the notorious renegade anti-football terror group, the S2 We ❤️ Hoof Brigade and their mysterious, figureheads, code names DD and SemiPro, current whereabouts unknown and unwanted on five continents.

I'm not backing off, as many a bookie will tell you, but it needs to start February in case his replacement doesn't arrive until the end of January. Alternatively we could go with the first 20 games of next season. That might not be fair on you though because the bet will probably be hopeless before it starts.

I certainly don't always agree with Pinchy but I do on Monty and will go into bat for him on this one. His Bladey connections mean next to nothing.

Micky Adams had similar Blades connections but he was the worst manager we have had. The thing that makes a succesful manager and team is a good manager and players that are good enough/buy into his vision.

Nowt to do with if he was a ball boy here or not.

Yes an interesting diatribe which follows and reinforces your agenda. Just answer the question. I am sure you have said that more than once to a defendant. :p:)

I'll not go over old ground, I think we all know Done's strengths and limitations up front, we've watched him enough up there. I do think it's his best position though and we shouldn't move him around, he offers little elsewhere.

My view is that, for now, whilst the team is producing the results we shouldn't tinker.

Long term, however, I feel we will be stronger with Jack O'Connell and Leon Clarke in the starting XI (presumably in place of Chris Basham and Matt Done). Aside from that, other than maybe adding some depth in midfield and possibly improving at left back (though Lafferty has improved) I feel comfortable with our options.
