Boasting Time: Things You Got Right

I wrote an open letter to Reg Brealey stating that he had just relegated us by selling Deano. It got a two-page spread in the Green 'Un of the day. I saved it but it's long been lost in one of many house moves. Is there an archive of Green 'Uns anywhere?....

Addendum: I bet Silent's got one..... :)
The Local Archives at the Sheffield Library would be able to print your letter for you

I said at half time against Burnley at Wembley that we would end up in Division Three again very soon.
Got called all the names under the sun

Not boasting about it though

I said you were a miserable negative ****.

1-1

That we would get relegated the day before we played Wigan
That we'd lose every play off since wolves
That selling our good players would make us worse in the long run
That the prince wasn't the money man mcabe said he would be
That appointment of Robson was catastrophic

A few I called

You fucking jinx......

He's still going strong on Bladesmad old McNulty. I love how he came up with Dr lie in another tantrum and has had to stick with it for years despite convincing nobody. I wonder what he really does

Masturbates excessively is my guess.

I got them as well. I also called we were fucked when Warnock failed to select Mc'Call to start in the 2003 Play Off final.

I've tried listing all the things that I was right about, but unfortunately I exceeded the maximum number of text.

Would it be possible to increase the post text box maximum size to around 500k words and I'll try again?

I, like you. was published in the Green Un with my ode to Warnock when he got us relegated. It is actually on an inaccessible hard drive, but the only lines I can recall were "who the heck was Mamadou Seck" and something about his pride. Just thought I'd throw that in there even though it is irrelevant.

I also tried to put a bet on Hillary Clinton to become the first female president the week after her husband's affair with Monica Lewinsky came to light 1998?. The bookie wouldn't take the bet. It remains to be seen whether or not that proves correct..... generally speaking, I am a very unlucky person & this proves it!

Monica for president!

And it was very late 1997 I believe.

I remember saying the same as well. Especially since we were already "cutting out cloth accordingly" that season.

Jose fucking Baxter ,after 3 games I said this wanker will be a leech on our club and take the piss out of us. I stuck to it and took no end of grief on here ,(even pms) . I for one hope he never gets to play pro football again ,I and plenty of others would give their right arm to play at Bramall Lane without even getting paid and that smackrat just took and took and took without an ounce of pride in the club.

I’m glad this thread has turned up to make me feel better about the ones I got wrong. My “wins” include

Saying Jags would go further than Tonge when Tonge was ripping defence (including Liverpool) apart in 02-03.

Saying Walker would go further than Naughton after the PO final v Burnley.

Saying we should sign Albert Adomah when he was a Bristol.

Saying we should sign Nahki Wells when Bradford were in the 4th tier.

Saying we should sign Lucas Akins when Burton were in League 1.

Saying we wouldn’t go up after we sold Nick Blackman.

Saying Lyle Taylor would be a very good striker in League 2 and might come again at League 1 after he struggled with us.

Saying we would go down when we sold Deano.

Saying we wouldn’t go up when we sold Deane and Fjortoft.

Saying we wouldn’t go up when we sold Maguire.

Saying we wouldn’t go up when we sold McDonald.

Saying we wouldn’t go up when we sold Murphy.

Saying that if we stuck with Neil Warnock, he’d get us up.

Saying we were going up when we signed Paul Ifill (having already got Kabba and Webber. I thought those 3 players would be key).

Saying Robson would be a disaster.

Saying we should have appointed Dean Smith instead of Nigel Clough.

Saying we should have signed Clayton Donaldson on a free from Crewe when we got relegated

Saying we should have signed Mark Duffy from Scunthorpe about 5 years ago.

Saying Scunthorpe would mount a promotion challenge this season.

Feeling better about some of those wrong calls now…
Where is the proof? ;)

Don't you like Jose Baxter?

I was always with you on that, but the fact he popped that goal in at Wembley is something I'll remember fondly.

A bit like Ade Akinbiyi - really poor signing but that goal....

That Scougall would improve if given a chance, there's potential there and it'd be too early to flog him.

I don’t think I’d be able to prove all of them but if you trawl back through the years on blades mad, I’m sure that you’ll see my recommendations of Adomah, Wells, Donaldson, Dean Smith and touting Walker over Naughton. In fact, I forgot to mention that I was also banging the drum for Connor Goldson a couple of years ago too. Unfortunately, they don’t have a search facility and I’m not willing to dedicate the next few days of my life to finding them. I had the same username if you fancy doing the research though (if they store posts for that long).

Away End, top tier, Goodison Park. Pre-match warm up.
Me: Bloody hell, if that big blonde twat is going to replace Deano he better know how to control a ball when the actual game starts!
Mate: Do you reckon he's ever kicked a ball before?
Me: Doesn't fucking look like it so far.

Outside Goodison Park roughly 2 hours later.
Both: If he plays more than 10 games we're down!

I thought my smiley would tell you that I was joking!

I was abroad when that playoff final was played, and watched it on a poor quality stream that kept freezing. When penalties started it was 2am where I was.

I turned off the computer and went to bed. It was obvious what was going to happen next.

Did it involve literature and some very thin products made from finely spun wood pulp?

Convincing our driver to keep driving very quickly up the M3, about 30 miles north of Portsmouth while said 'Sheffield Auto Hire' minibus was still being attacked by Pompey thugs swiping crow bars at us out of their car windows as we sped along

God this thread makes me realise how many I got wrong but anyway:
  1. Long was never all that, we'd of been better sticking with Howard.
  2. (Debatable) Lowton was a much more important player for us than MaGuire
  3. Sacking of Clough was a mistake
  4. Danny Wilson was actually doing a decent job in his 2nd season
  5. The Nick Montgomery hate was totally out of order and all perspective.
