The Blades made it eleven games unbeaten as they saw off MK Dons in front of over 20,000 fans thanks to a Billy Sharp winner in the second half after Darren Potter had equalised Stefan Scougall’s first half strike. United did just about enough to win the game in a relatively even contest but the fighting spirit from Chris Wilder’s side was all too evident again as they managed to take all three points in a battling performance. The new-found resilience was in affect for much of the game as the Blades fought for loose balls, made sure they got bodies in the way and did enough to ensure they won the game.

Manager Chris Wilder had to make a change as striker as Matty Done had fractured his jaw in training and was thus sidelined. Stefan Scougall came in to play just behind Billy Sharp in preference to Caolan Lavery. Chris Basham kept his place in the side ahead of Jack O’Connell. Managerless Dons had of course been struggling but boasted a squad of quality and experience to the extent that they were able to call on Kieran Agard and Nicky Maynard off the bench. They had former Owl and local lad Richie Barker in charge temporarily as they waited to name their new manager.

United had to kick towards the Kop in the first half and began well with Sharp winning a corner early on after threatening to turn his man and then Coutts and Fleck linked up that led to a mistake from Hendry but the Blades could not quite fashion a chance. At the other end, Fleck lost the ball and Reeves was played in but his shot was well saved at his near post from Moore who palmed behind for a corner.

Fleck then was involved at the other end as he linked well with Sharp before the ball was cleared but soon after United had the lead. Fleck was involved in returning the ball and after Sharp was blocked out, the ball fell to SCOUGALL whose shot lacked power but had accuracy and nestled inside the post to give the Blades the lead.

United continued to dominate the early proceedings with good interchange seeing a half chance for Sharp and then soon after the lively Duffy nearly played in a chance. Freeman’s deep cross was headed into the side netting from Lafferty before Sharp’s turn and shot was wide.

The home side had enjoyed the majority of the play so far but MK Dons started to come back into the game and it was around this time that Basham was moved further forward as United had more of a 4-2-2-1-1 formation with Basham in midfield now supporting the midfield 4 and Scougall just behind Sharp but just ahead of Duffy. Carruthers took a knock and was replaced by Agard before half an hour had been played.

MK had more of the ball now and were starting to peg united back but they had not created too much despite a lot more possession. Indeed the home side had the next chance with Fleck firing wide form long range. The first half came to an end with Lafferty wasting a decent crossing opportunity just before the break.

After the break, MK settled better and it was not long before they were level. A few united players maybe could have tracked their runners and were slow to react but it was good play with Lewington and Bowditch playing neat balls and the cross was transferred into the path of POTTER who firmly knocked a low shot past Moore to restore parity.

The next stage of the game was even with United struggling to make the same headway they had in the first half and it became more of a midfield battle. United’s lack of pace and height up front meant they had to play the ball into feet and this was meaning chances were restricted. However, Sharp won a corner on the hour before Duffy had an effort deflected wide. Maynard came on for Colclough a MK now had more striking options on the field.

Just after the hour United went back in front. Coutts diagonal ball looked to have been cut out but as the ball seemingly drifted out Scougall stayed with it and did excellently to not only keep it in but to hook it back into the danger area. SHARP needed time to wrestle it under control but once he did, he managed to drill it home to restore the Blades lead. It was a goal out of nothing but was thanks to the hard work of Scougall and the opportunistic finishing of their leading scorer Sharp who moved onto 10 goals for the season.

MK tried to respond but a miskick from Bowditch followed by a shot over from the same man meant United were not troubled too much.

Scougall got a standing ovation as he was replaced by Lavery with just over 15 minutes to play.

Powell came on for Bowditch as MK now were throwing extra striker forward in an attempt to get a point but the game had now become rather scrappy much to the liking of the home team. Potter was very lucky not to get another yellow when he felled Sharp and the referee was very lenient to just have a word after a clear foul.

Sharp’s link up saw a chance for Lavery but his shot went wide as the game soon after entered five minutes stoppage time.

O’Connell came on for Duffy as United sought to see out the game. For the final moments of the game United were able to keep the ball in the final third of the MK Dons half and won a series of corners and throw ins. Indeed, MK could not even get the ball in the final third and when they finally did, it was cleared and the referee’s whistle for full time came soon after.

United – It was not scintillating, not superb football but we scrapped, fight, played decent in spells and showed a spirt and resolve I have not seen in years past. We did enough to win the game. We had the better of the first part of the game and scored; they then came and had a spell before we regrouped but they scored with one of the first attacks of the second half. After this I was unsure what would happen and it became a game that you felt the next goal would seal it. So it proved as a moment of real tenacity from Scougall saw us recycle the ball and Sharp did what he does best and buried it. After this we did enough to see out the game with some hard work, decent link up and solid no nonsense defending.

They had one chance in the first few minutes and then scored but had few chances outside of this. We did not have too many chances but got into the last third more than them and at least had some chances, even if they were mostly half chances. We still had a lot of the ball and I felt if anyone deserved to win it was us. We scored two scrappy-ish goals and to be fair to them, they scored the best goal of the game with a decent well worked (albeit avoidable) goal. After this you felt it could go either way but we came again and got the crucial third goal in the game. After this United had something to hold onto again and saw out the game very professionally.

Cannot say we had too many outstanding performances but a lot of solid, workmanlike ones and I felt there was a determination to carry on the run. Tactically and formation wise we changed things a few times during one game (as did they) but managed to always keep enough control of the game to win it.

The defence was mostly solid, the midfield worked hard and the players nearer the top in Duffy, Scougall and Sharp were busy all game. MK have some decent players and I felt played some decent stuff too but we showed a real spirit and won the key battle when we needed to.

Going forward it was tough with only Sharp as an out and out striker and then players coming off him and it meant we could not play the high ball or even ball to run onto due to lack of pace/height but we did managed to play some neat and tidy stuff even with just one up. I felt the likes of Coutts, Fleck and Basham won a lot of loose ball and at least tried to find Sharp or one of the more advanced players but it was hard to get men amongst him. With Done out for a few more weeks and Done also injured we may have to see a lot off this type of formation/strategy and whilst many may have criticised Wilder for playing Scougall; he did well and was involved in both goals and worked incredibly hard. It meant we had most of the midfield all game even if it meant we did not have too many chances or clear link up in the forward positions. Defensively we headed and kicked it away and got the blocks in when needed to ensure we won the game. The goal was poor as runners did not go but like the third at Bradford was still well made and finished. Sometimes you have to hold your hand up.

Scunny, Bolton and Bradford all won of course but United just have to keep going. Eleven games unbeaten is a great run and means we are right around the top. We just have to keep the run going. I felt Bradford and MK Dons would be two of the tougher games and now we have a series of home games to home sandwiched between a game at local rival Chesterfield. The aim has to be to pick up points from games v Bury, Shrewsbury, Walsall and Swindon (a trip to Charlton amongst that batch) and see where we are at Christmas. There is a real spirit and togetherness there and some spells of decent football too (albeit we can do better in this regard) that means we can feel positive about the side at the moment.

MK Dons – I was really surprised that they have struggled so much this season. I felt they were shoe in for the top 6 and actually still do despite the struggle and the relegation type struggle they seem to be amongst at the moment. Karl Robinson paid the price and on reflection may have wished he had gone in the summer as he stayed and things seemed rather stale. They still have a lot of decent players and some experience all over the field. They will of course name a new manager in the next week or so and I still feel they will be around the top places at the end. Automatic may be beyond them but a top 6 place I would still not rule out with the squad that they have. They have players up the top end in Maynard, Agard, Powell, Bowditch at this level that should get them amongst the goals and in the other parts of the side Reeves, Upson, Potter and Carruthers all possess decent quality. At the back they have struggled and newcomer Downing had already been dropped. They did look poor there today and need to improve in this area to move up the league.

Today they maybe could have argued they did enough to earn a draw but only had 2 shots on goal and conceded a lot of possession and play. They showed some decent passing and movement but looked a bit powder puff in the final third. At the back the two full backs were erratic and I felt the centre backs also struggled with Walsh never getting to grips with Sharp all game.

They scored a lovely well worked goal but gave away two sloppy ones and after it went 2-1 you could see the lack of confidence as they never really convinced that they may come back again.

Be interesting to see what direction Winkelman goes in. Heavy rumours around data guy Mitchell who worked at Spurs and others getting the gig but there is also Adkins stories! I think whoever gets the job should take them up the league and at least threaten the playoff places. I would certainly be surprised if they finished in the bottom half of the table.

Opponent man of the match : Thought Carruthers played well and looked a threat before he went off. Agard did not do much and the other strikers who came on Powell and Maynard never really got into it (thanks to our defence) but Potter had a decent game capped with his goal. The player that looked the most threatening was Reeves who was able to get into little pockets, thread through a few balls and also look a goal threat with some shots towards goal.

Opponent Weak link : Walsh or Lewington. Baldock and Hendry had their moments but the other two were poor. Lewington has been at the club forever dating back to the Wimbledon days but he looked slow and sluggish today. The lad Walsh got booked and could have been sent off. Looked very slow and seemed slow to react to things.

SUFC Player Ratings –

Moore 7/10 – Steady game. Made one really good save early on and then after this not sure he had many saves to make or much to do. Little chance on the goal. After this he was untroubled as the defence did a good job. Distribution was mixed with some good kick outs and then some poor ones straight out of play. Huge improvement from Long and I feel much more assured with him between the sticks.

Freeman 5.5/10 – His poorest game this season. I felt he was the weak link at the back. He dithered defensively and gave his man too much room. Just did not seem with it. This translated the other way as he put 2 or 3 really bad crosses in. Did put one decent one in that led to a chance in the first half. Second half he did a bit better but still was 10-15 yards off his man and was not tight enough. We went to a 4 and this exposes him more.

Lafferty 6.5/10 – Steady ish. Had some decent bit of play going forward and some decent link up but he is quite slow to do things and lacks pace and that bit of drive. He had one header wide and then one cross that was nearly put in first half. He did show some good fitness as he got up and down and as we had more of a 4 at the back had to do defensive stuff but he did get skinned twice easily as they attacked and both could have led to chances. He dived in once when he should have just held his position. He is a workmanlike player who does nothing bad but nothing that good and I suppose he will say we have not lost a game he has played (like Wright).

Ebanks Landell 7/10 – Another solid game. Missed the odd header or clearance but generally really solid again. He sometimes takes the ‘lot out’ which is a risky strategy but often it pays off. Surprisingly decent at control and passing when he gets onto it. He is just a very dominant defender. When we went to a 4 he has to make sure more (less room for error) but he was able to make most of the tackles/blocks he went for.

Wright 7.5/10 – Really impressed with him today. Like I have said with the rest he ended up in a more functional back four but he still did his job. Swept up and did all the little things. Nothing really got past him all day and he just went about things with a minimum of fuss. Reminds of Paul Stancliffe/Lee Sandford in how he runs (style) but also how he reads the game so well. A really solid player who had made a real difference and been very underrated.

Basham 6.5/10- Started at the back but ended up in midfield. He was his usual all action self. Gets in tackles, breaks things up and wins headers/loose balls. He is a nuisance for opponents in that he gets about so well and covers a lot of ground. His size means he covers space too and he does those little things. The converse is that his touch for the most part is really poor. So often the ball shoots off him and he has to make a tackle with his second touch. He is quite poor technically and his basic control lets him down. When he tries a pass more than few yards it can often go wrong. When he does what he can do well though he is a real asset. Prefer him in midfield to the back positions and felt O’Connell was unfortunate not to get the nod. Still will be a really positive factor for us throughout the season due to his versatility and effort play alone.

Fleck 7.5/10 – Excellent today. Might have been our best player. He actually started the game with some poor play and touches but he got stronger as the game went on. He worked so hard and got up and down and made a lot of tackles and interceptions; especially down the left hand second half. He used the ball well and showed his touch and composure. Just a really good footballer and someone who will prove to be an excellent addition.

Coutts 7/10 – Some really good bits of play as he showed his football brain with some lovely turns and drifts away from opponents and transfer of play. He showed again he can be quite strong in 50/50 tackles too and despite his perceived lack of aggression is stronger than you think. Showed quite a few neat touches again today. He was guilty today of a bit of ball watching and lost his man a few times; most crucially Potter who ran off him twice and the second time saw him get away and get his shot away to score. Shame as he was decent apart from this.

Duffy 7/10 – Still a player that frustrates for me. He gets into some great areas and he showed this again. Really hard player to pick up and he got into areas that made him difficult to track. When on the ball he did some neat parts of play and linked well with others. A clever player that makes those little passes/one twos/touches but I would say there is still not enough end product. He put over a few cracking set plays too that nearly were put in but a few other times he telegraphed through balls in open play. Felt he tired as the game went on and was less effective second half

Scougall 7.5/10 – Pushing Fleck and Wright for man of the match. Worked so hard and whilst he had that hot potato feel when he gets on the ball; I felt today he was better when he did have it. Scored the first goal with an opportunistic if scrappy strike and then of course made the second chasing a lot cause to retrieve it and pull it back for the winner. Even outside of these key moments, he did well, winning a few free kicks, harrying back at the other end and generally being a nuisance. He is a handy lad to have around. Not sure he will start many games as he his end product and inability to affect games consistently remains but his energy is a real positive to have around the squad. He showed today for the odd game he can come in and have an impact as he chases/harries opponents and does get into good areas in the final third (3 goals now despite me being critical of his end product over the years).

Sharp 7/10 – Hard game for him without a proper partner but he worked hard and led the line as well as he could. First half he had a few half chances and chases defenders down but as the game went on it became harder with many balls played head/neck height. He kept plugging away and then got the one chance to bury the winner. He is a clinical player who at this level will get goals and in these sort of games can be the difference. Lovely to see him salute the heavens (clearly a tribute to the son eh lost 5 years ago) after he scored and of course the crowds ovation on 5 minutes was a nice touch too.

Subs

Lavery – Came on for Scougall and went up top. Had a few bits of link play but was mostly chasing things down as we wanted to just see out the result. Had one good chance when Sharp played him in and he shot just wide after driving at the defence.

O’Connell – Was brought on right at the death and won one header I recall as we just wanted to ensure we made sure of the win.

Manager – Wilder 7.5/10 – He bravely brought Scougall in for the stricken Done rather than the more obvious Lavery but his call made one and scored one. He also played Basham instead of O’Connell and was brave enough to change the formation when he felt we could have an extra man in midfield even though we were winning at this stage. He is quite different to Adkins and even Clough in that he will make changes like this, even during games and is not afraid to try things/change things. He ensured we had a nice solid base again and still had a threat up top. Once again more than anything we were determined and fought hard and cared for the shirt. This attitude is seeing us win games and the run carries on. We look a tougher side to beat and have a resolve we did not have. The football today was ok but could be better but I feel winning games like this would not have happened a year ago.

Ref – Simon Hooper. I thought he was ok really. I cannot recall too many bad decisions. He tried to let things flow and only pulled things back that were obvious. Booked 6 players. 4 for them and 2 for us. All were deserved bookings. Freeman may have been a bit harsh but it was a stage where he needed to books one (from either side due to fouls mounting up and he needed to calm it down) but all the others were fair enough – for cynical fouls. MK have been a bit of a dirty side in years past. Today they were not quite at this level but still made a few poor fouls. Two lads Potter and also Walsh both got booked and committed fouls after that could have seen them go. Potter really ought to have gone for the late one on Sharp and he did bottle it a bit I felt. He was not helped by a poor assistant referee on the South Stand who really did not seem to know what day it was and was overruled on two throws. The other assistant took an age to put his flag up for obvious offsides.

Crowd – Over 20,000 which was impressive. It seemed noticeably busier outside and around the concourses. MK brought only a couple of hundred too. The Blades fans got behind the side and were buoyed by the opener of course. Kept behind the side even after we were pegged back. Not raucous by any means but good positive support with some decent chanting and volume. I believe if the run keeps going, then of course the numbers and noise level goes up also and it would not be inconceivable for us to have around 22-23,000 going into the New Year if we keep on the same upward trajectory.

It was that enjoyable in terms of effort and another win, I could not even think of any nicknames to give any more supporters around us. Funny that! We don’t hear of ‘Positive man’ or ‘Great stuff Blades man’! We should do if things keep going like this.

Cheers Deadbat

Nice to see Scoogs slotting into the 'hardworking' role Done has been doing so well...think Freeman was up against a good opponent today....

Basham was very ordinary today, and he generally is these days.
Although I would disagree with OP in that I'd rather have him as far back as possible than in a midfield position. He kills off all momentum when he's in midfield.

Thoughtful, intelligent, reflexive analysis as ever Deadbat. I really look forward to and appreciate your analyses. Don't you think that the fact that we now have our three biggest competitors for the league title - Scunthorpe, Bolton and Bradford - already played against away, and now only to play at home at the Lane, should give us grounds for optimism? And just imagine the attendances at those three games? 25,000 minimum? In the third division! Great days again at the Lane!!

Still think the two full backs/wings backs are a position we could improve in.

I may be in the minority, but a fit and confident Brayford coming back in January might not be the worst option in a 3-5-2 formation?

Bit concerned he's a one manager player DB. Thoughts?

I've got my concerns regarding Freeman, mainly because I think that sometimes his concentration wavers, but think Lafferty is steadily improving and he did a lot of decent stuff today. One or two good interceptions and defended ok, his main problem is distribution.

Previously, I haven't been Freeman's biggest fan. But I think it's more about 'the team' than individual's now...I'm not sure Brayford's leaving was all about finance...maybe I'm wrong...sure someone on here will tell me :)

Brayford was continually getting touched up by uncle Nigel.... er, sort of.

that`d put anyone off their game.

Agree we could and should look to improve in the wing back positions/wide areas, completely disagree Brayford could be any sort of improvement. He's worse going forward than Freeman, he's worse defensively than Freeman, he's more expensive than Freeman. We should sell him while he's still got 18 months left on his deal.

My ratings for today...

Moore - 6.5
Freeman - 6.5
Ebanks-Landell - 7.5
Wright - 8
Lafferty - 7
Coutts - 6.5
Basham - 7
Fleck - 8
Duffy - 7
Scougall - 7.5
Sharp - 7

Lavery - 6

Wilder - 8 - wrong team selection IMO but more than rectified it by making the correct changes without any hesitation. His tactical nous possibly got us the win today.

1st of all after watching Palace game on match of the day just makes me even more impressed by our fans
A mid table Premier League side - 25 & half
Top 6 side in the 3rd tier - 20 & half

Anyway onto the football Didnt quite get why some fans thought it could be breeze as With or without Karl Robinson as soon the fixtures are out you know MK Dons is always tricky game regardless whenever you play them. There up there with Bolton Charlton Millwall Bradford peterboro. Just Glad to get a hard fought 3pts v a good team, as could easily been a draw as it bit like Bristol Rovers we didnt play well but we did enough. There number 10 reeves had great game quite influential causing a few problems i thought

Although at points was wondering if MK Dons had any original chants of their own as it seemed to be 3 on a loop just copying wales palace & us. Then again MK are used to stealing things ;)

I thought we were ordinary today, and Franchise seemed to have more possession in more attacking areas, albeit without doing a great deal once they were in those areas. Oh well, three points, move on

I thought Done fractured his jaw in the Bradford game, not in training.

You might be right. They kept it quiet if he did. No mention in the build up to the game and I was surprised he was not in the matchday squad.

By the recent high standards we've set ourselves, I agree you could say we were ordinary. MK Dons were decent to be fair. But I enjoyed that performance just as much as the convincing win against Port Vale. Effort, teamwork, spirit (and a pinch of quality). You'd like to be able to take that for granted, but I'd almost forgotten over the last couple of seasons what it brings.. Good work Chris Wilder..And perfect that Billy got the winner this week...UTB

Dead-on, Deadbat – those player ratings mirror what I'd have given them, I thought Wright and Fleck were the stand-outs. Not a pretty one on the whole, but just enough and a deserved win.

The only thing I will disagree on is the ref, thought he was awful, tried to make it a non contact sport, also bottled it, should have sent there man off late on.

Great report Deadbat
Thanks.

I thought we'd have been better with JOC instead of Basham and even though Bash didn't have a bad game, there were a few times where his control let him down and where he booted it anywhere when in space rather than look for a man and keep possession. I'd definitely have brought JOC on, probably for Freeman and moved Bash to RB/RWB, after we went 2-1 up. I can see why Wilder would keep him in though and we won so there's nothing really to complain about.

Fleck had a really good game, as did Wright but what does Scougs have to do to win over our fans on here? Scores a goal, then shows some great play in setting up the winner and he worked his proverbials off the rest of the time. There was a great bit of defending from him when I think their No.2 (good player) got past Lafferty (I think) and Scougs had tracked him all the way back into our area, closed him down and didn't allow him to play the ball. He was also on the end of an awful but very typically MK cynical challenge that should have been a straight red for me when Scougs was breaking into their box in the second half, might have been Potter, in which case he definitely should have gone!

Was really impressed with MK Dons.
They bossed possession and played a Barcelona style tippy tapping football.
Initial thoughts were that they looked a higher quality (better) team than us.

Then you realised that they hardly created any chances.
They were constantly overplaying and trying to walk the ball into the net.
Another factor is that they rarely shot from distance, in fact they rarely shot
Because their players were so keen to retain possession at any cost.
MK reminded me of a better version of the Clough/ Adkins style.

The style differences were noticeable.
When we got the ball we were quicker tempo and more direct.
Still passed and kept possession where needed but we'd gamble trying to score.
They looked fantastic in and around the centre circle but we always looked the team more likely to score.

Agreed he has a good game, other than the goal and assist this stood out for me. Saw the danger early and did really well to cut out what was looking like a dangerous attack.

As well as he played I still would like to see a bit more of Lavery, might be able to give him a run out in the cup games coming up.

AS one of their fans said ,we continue to dominate the halfway line. Nigel Adkins could endeavour to transform them into a worst version of what they are now.

Orient are awful and be good to keep the run going but I would not be devestated if we went out next week. United have put a lot of effort in the last few games and giving some of them close to a fortnight off (I would take the fine at Grimsby) would be the sensible move.

I certainly would play a few of the younger lads and some of the fringe players next week.

Brooks, Chapman and Lavery should all start

Great point. I think Freeman, Coutts and Lafferty have looked really leggy the last few weeks and its started to have an impact on performances. These lads aren't used to playing all these games.

I would. We haven't been knocked out of the cup in the first round since 1981-2. That's a good record and we should try to keep it going.

Our "fringe players" have let us down in 3 cup games so far this season. One or two changes, fine, but we should play to win.

I reckon we will rest 3 or 4 first team players for next Sunday allowing for us to maximise the rules 3 days later in the dead rubber at Grimsby where we will basically then flood the team with fringe players. Hussey, Lavery, Whiteman and possibly Wilson (if fit) could be the ones to step in
