FA Cup. At home Versus Orient

United were first out of the "hat" for a home tie against Leyton Orient.

Does anyone have any fond memories of games v Orient?

If memory serves me right (but it often doesn't) an enjoyable game for me was against them (I think) at home when Simon Webster, who had served us well previously, had a blinder for Orient and they were all over us.
A superb display of goalkeeping from Simon Tracey, almost single handedly, kept them at bay and we ended up beating them.

I assume someone will put me straight if I have got it wrong. ( Cue wiki searches)
That was the FA Cup 4th round replay against Charlton (Webster was playing for them) in 1992. Tracey was brilliant in the first half making several saves but we scored three times against the run of play. Sadly Whitehouse broke his leg. Second half was more even but Charlton pulled a goal back

Gutted when the Orient were relegated as it was my local away game. Could practically walk it there. Couple of decent pubs in Leyton an'all for the pre and post match pint. So what with them going down and now Brexit I've rented out my flat and moved to Warsaw. Fuck it.

Remember watching a match in one of Walthy's videos- might have been 78-79- where we lost 2-0 to them at the Lane. They had that great kit with two red "braces" on front and were a pretty solid team at the time from what I've been told.
Stainrod scored first heading in a Sabella corner before Joe Mayo and Peter Kitchen (Blades fan) scored to make it 2-1 to Orient

First game I was aware of after starting to support United when we signed Sabella. We took the lead but lost 2-1 in August 1978. It was on ITV. Then the first home game I ever went to on my own, without an adult was New Years Day 1983. We won 3-0. Mervyn Day was in goal for Orient and got loads of stick from the Kop. Jeff King must have just come back from injury because he scored and the Kop were singing "Kingy is back!"
One of my earlier games too. I remember singing Kingy is back.

Don't give a toss about this, i'm part of that generation who just see the FA cup is a annoying inconvenience more than anything, when we got to the semi-final a few years ago it was magic and I like a cup upset just as much as a the next man, but really I only pay attention to this cup when it gets to Wembley.

Didn't Whitehouse break his leg against Bristol City in the league cup the season after?

We got them in the FA Cup a few years back and the game got called off at some ridiculous time i.e 1pm. Pig fan mates took great pleasure in texting me to inform us. Not all bad as it meant a day sesh on the ale in London.

the chances of us drawing an uninspiring tie in round one of the FA cup I would say are very high
especially if we are at home

away trips at least add a bit of trepidation
and playing the unknown adds a soupcon of interest
but its only round 3 on that stirs our blood , as we have 4 wins on our cv

some factoids

we only ever first played orient in 1956 in league 2
we lost our first 4 home meetings against them
we haven't lost against them in last 11 meetings
the last were 2 defeats in 1983

we have only ever met once in the fa cup

13 Jan 2009 Leyton Orient v Sheffield United W 1-4 FA Cup

Yes you are right, my mistake!
Frame it lads and lasses. Frame it.

.... Although this is the second time in a month.

.... I'm getting seriously worried about Silent's state of mind. Maybe he's missing the mental joust with Darren more than we first feared

Probably like the rest of us he's expecting to wake up any minute and find that we're mid-table, Adkins is still in charge and still banging on about Hammond's unseen work, geese and the shitting blade-a-coaster.

Kyle Walker made his debut that night. Somebody predicted he'd play for England then started wrecking the seats!
Not me!
I thought he got turned inside out and back again by their winger in first half.
My feeling was that he'd never make a full back!
Kyle was bloody good when going forward though!

All the attributes were there, he just looked a bit naïve with positioning, which was understandable as he'd just come back from a loan at Northampton playing mainly centre-back.

Didn't they equalise against us in the 99th minute last time at the lane?

Few memories of Orient (all away):

Getting started on by a few fellow Blades for saying Monty "wasn't that bad". Seriously. Think that was the 1-1 draw.

George Long making his first appearance since the 4-0 drubbing at Swansea in the Championship. Had a cracking game and fans never stopped singing his name. (Possibly the same game as above)

Staying in a pub down the road after playing them once and Wet Spam were playing Arsenal on TV. My Uncle took great delight in reminding them all that they are cheats, that was a long night. (After the 1-0 down there I think).

Apart from the King William IV pub (with £2 pints of real ale), there is nothing I miss about going down to Leyton Orient.

Not quite - Long was brought in by Wilson in 2011 after Steve Simonsen had flapped (never!) at a cross in the 96th minute at Orient when we were 1-0 up. Kevin Lisbie equalised; Long then played our next two games against MK Dons (won 2-1) and then Exeter (drew 4-4) before Simonsen was recalled for the rest of the season.

I think you're on about the 1-0 the following season when Mark Howard was forced off after about 15 minutes. Long pulled off a few great saves though and looked a real prospect. We won through a brilliant goal by Blackman, curled nonchalently into the top corner from 25 yards.

The King Billy is a dive. Sorry.

Ahh I get my results mixed up, cheers!

Yeah a dive it might be but can't argue with £2 a pint :D

To slightly misquote Basil Fawlty, what do you expect from an FA Cup First Round draw? The Hanging Gardens Of Babylon?

or Kryten (apologies for misquote) what do you hope to find? The face of the Madonna, a Turner seascape or a previously undiscovered Shakespeare sonnet?
