Preliminary bankruptcy hearing in London today, HMRC claim he owes them in excess £150,000.

He certainly had a successful career and must have earned decent money during that time. However having seen him around Hull in recent years, I can't say I'm surprised at the news.

Didn't he get dropped from the play off final squad on the eve of the game, for shitting in the 18th hole on Uniteds pre final golf day ? Or did I make that up

Sadly he's just a daft lad from Gypsyville, without the brains to do anything else.

When he was earning the money, instead of investing or saving it he like many players do was pissing it up the wall. Seen him out and about in hull a few times when I've gone out there, and seems to go out just looking for someone to speak to him and idolise him. Sad really, he's not a bad fella.

That was my understanding too

I remember him getting dropped but never knew the reason behind it, I assumed he and Warnock had a falling out. Shitting in the 18th hole, dear me...

I know, so near to the clubhouse too! He really should have waited. He lived up to his name eh?

I must say, I'm sorry to hear that he's fallen on hard times though. He sounds like he may have some serious problems managing his life, post-football. It must be difficult managing your life as a footballer in any case. If you take any person and just project them into a lifestyle the likes of which they have never ever known and don't prepare them for it - then take it away again in a very short space of time - it must have some serious psychological effect. One minute they're just normal kids from a normal background, next minute they're superstars on a world stage with more money than they could possibly hope to ever spend, then next minute, it's all gone again. Along with the adulation and short-lived fame that came with it.

Probably why some/many footballers seem to do the gambling bit, or turn to drink. They need help and I suspect that this guy's tax bill is the least of his problems.

Didn't he miss a good chance in the kop end one game and run towards the crowd screaming and pulling a stupid face?

Dunno, but I once did a shit in the top hole of the Bingham Park course.
And, no, I'm not making it up. :D

Was it an hole in one, a two or three put, or did he in fact pitch it straight in the hole?

I used to play golf there!!! Was it the one that was on the steep slope?
Sorree!

There was a road that ran off Greystones Road - near the Highcliffe - I think it was Bingham Park Road (huge white house at the end) and ran up to that green and it was perfectly flat (if a bit smelly). You might mean the one just before Greystones Road meets Highcliffe Road?

Anyway, sorry again!

Oh, I once pissed on the centre spot at Hillsborough (Villa game in the 80's when thousands of Villa fans invaded the pitch at the end).

This could lead to a whole new thread. Let's call it 'Coprophilia Corner'.

It would be a bit smelly if you'd done a shit in the hole! :)

Not only did he get dropped but he went off on one. The rest of the lads didn't handle the situation. You could tell before kick off something was not right.

That huge white house at the end (48) was mine (before a "matrimonial" incident) and I have been looking for the culprit who stank the place out for some years. You Bastard!

Anyone earning what he did going bankrupt after retirement is a total muppet. It really shouldn't be hard to avoid. Some of them are like babies.

My take on the main points here.

- Re the play-off final, in my opinion Warnock made an error of judgement. Had the incident happened before a league game, no problems, drop him and discipline him. Before a play-off final however, you do all you can to keep the situation as normal as possible. As has been alluded to here, the rest of the team were clearly affected by what happened. Joleon Lescott was absolutely immense for Wolves in that game, but let's be honest, he didn't really have much to deal with in terms of physicality. Windass would have been at him from the off, snide little tugs and digs, words in his ear. Who knows what the outcome would have been but I can almost guarantee we wouldn't have been rolled over so easily with Windass in the side. By all means, discipline him the following week but on the eve of the most lucrative match in world football? No not for me.

- Re Windass going bankrupt. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it but I do recognise that however rich somebody is, if they are ill-advised, not too bright, suffer from depression and don't have much of a support network, you aren't going to stay rich for long. It's a bit like asking why that massive ship sank when it only had a small hole in it. There should be some scheme in place whereby a percentage of wages can be diverted to programmes for education/re-training during and after a playing career in my opinion.

Not a great deal of sympathy coming from my direction.

He had about twenty years of working the same Monday to Saturday as myself and most of us have covered by the end of a Tuesday!

He would have got paid a hell of a lot more money for it too.

There is then this misconception that after they stop playing, for a lot of them, they cannot then carry on working. "it's a short career". What bollocks. It's not like they die the moment they hang their boots up. In fact, being quite well known could give them a leg up in many professions. It's not like they don't have free time during their career to train for another vocation, do some study or learn a trade.

But hey, after a hard 2 hours of running about kicking a ball which most people would give their right arm for, you can't expect to be doing much else than about 8 hours of FIFA on the x-box can you? God forbid you do something productive that might set you up to fill your time later in life.

Blade for Sale, regarding the play off final, the mistake in my view Warnock made was not reverting back to having McCall in midfield after Rankine did a specific job in the semi. Windass was rubbish in the semi if you recall.

Neither Warnock nor Windass mention it in their autobiographies, so I'm going to call bullshit on that one.

He posted a tweet yesterday about having always paid his taxes and that he's owed money by the film industry. I wonder if he got caught up in a similar scheme to the one which Keith Gillespie lost a lot money in, which was effectively a tax avoidance scheme based on investing in films. I believe quite a few footballers lost significant amounts in similar schemes.

I can see how easy it would be for a footballer to go bankrupt. They spend years earning a lot of money with a lifestyle and expenditure to match, and overnight stop earning the vast sums. It would be difficult (for a non-educated person) to draw a line and cut the expenditure right back.

Without knowing any details, the greed aspects of these schemes are emphasised and swallowed whole by the fiscally illiterate. Although the advice that investments can go down as well as up should have been clearly mentioned, being good at a sport doesn't prevent gullibility from clouding your judgement. I've had several clients earn substantial amounts, did any of them listen to the sound advice provided by myself or their accountant? Bollocks they did!

Ex-Premier League footballer Dean Windass made bankrupt

Former Premier League footballer Dean Windass has been made bankrupt over a £150,000 tax debt.

A judge made the bankruptcy order against the 47-year-old Hull City legend at a hearing in London following an application from HM Revenue and Customs.

He was not at the hearing and was not represented by a lawyer.

Windass made more than 600 appearances and scored more than 200 goals in an 18-year career.

More on this and other Hull stories

The Hull-born striker played for more than half a dozen clubs, including Bradford City, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United and Aberdeen.

In 2008 he scored the winning goal in the Wembley play-off final which saw Hull City promoted to the top flight for the first time in their history.

He has spoken openly about his battle with alcohol and depression following his retirement from football in 2010.

Thing is if he actually has his head screwed on correctly he could sort his life out much easier than any other joey. I mean he's been involved in football for many a year and I'd put my house on it that he has plenty of contacts in the game. I'm pretty sure he could still have some sort of involvement within football and still get paid a lot more than any other joey would. Bloody hell give me one weeks wage of an average footballer and I'd be sorted for life.

You'd find something to spend it on. :)
