Basham

I might be on my own here but I thought it was a red card. The freeze frame above and watching it on the highlights; Basham is high and is over the ball. Surprised not many see it that way. An appeal would be a waste of time and the fact we wont bother I sense tells a story.

That's definitely my reading of it. There might be the case that the challenge on him earlier was as bad, so possible inconsistent refereeing, but the challenge itself was not good. The Scunthorpe player makes a meal of it, but then so does Scougall for the challenge that rightfully was given as a foul for the penalty. Don't like to see that at all – nice that Done hauled him up to snap him out of it.

It wasn;t a commited tackle. It was a stupid over the ball lunge that nearly cost us the game. I am all for tackling and fight but on a yellow card it was a ridiculous tackle.

but he wasn't on a yellow though that was a straight Red....

He did ok but sadly like Coutts, Duffy and Lafferty hasn't got the bite of Basham, to illustrate my point watch the Scunny player run past Coutts with ease before scoring their 2nd goal.
Coutts couldn't take one for the team which Im sure he would have done as he was already on a yellow. In hindsight the correct decision as we would have had 2 midfielders out for Bristol.

Bonkers tackle by our least intelligent player.
It's as if CW has told Basham that since he'll never be a footballer (because he can't do anything in possession just like old Nick) , he might as well make a name for himself by running round like a lunatic because Blades fans love a trier.
Trouble is , he'll never be the clever destroyer that Monty was.

Honestly I think freeze frames and slow motion can often make things look worse. Fairly certain it was his instep that caught their defender. It was a 60 40 ball in Bashams favour if anything and it wasn't like he jumped in two footed, just the players natural momentum into each other meant it was a strong challenge.

I may be in the minority but I dont even think it was a foul!

Good decision by the ref. I think one of their lads should've gone earlier in the game.

I may not be popular for saying this but Basham is relatively a better footballer than Monty, still no genius but a decent league one player.
Considerably more pace than Monty.
Monty was an embarrassingly poor premier league or championship midfielder with absolutely no pace and no ability.
Yes a real trier but absolutely nothing else his passing was woefull , he could hardy find one of his team mates if he was more than 5 yards away. I was so tired of watching him do a great tackle and him give the ball back the opposition.
I think some people a looking back with rose tinted glasses on.

I can hear the sound of the Pinchy express arriving shortly.......

That picture clears it all straight red in today's game

Indeed and it's not the first time. It wasn't malicious but utterly daft. A lot of modern refs can't wait to produce a red and it's crass stupidity to sit up and beg for one. It's time he learned....

Pictures can mask reality very easily. Almost everyone who was at the game ,including Scunny fans and myself thought it was a 50/50 challenge in the context of what was going off ,including the play acting of the Scunthorpe team. Almost everyone who wasn't there thought it was a sending off ,from TV and pictures.

Whether it's a "50/50 challenge" doesn't somehow give him a get out clause from a red card. All it means is he was entitled to go for it with a legal challenge. He was not entitled to go for it with an illegal challenge – regardless of whether it's a 50/50 or a 95/5 in Basham's favour.

I was there also and I was that low down I didn't get a good view of it the still picture clears it up for me,as well as Dead man (and I don't like him as a referee ) putting the red card up very quickly after the incident.

So why wasn't Mirfin sent off ,for his head high challenge on Scougall ?

Presume because a penalty was awarded that's the new thing for refs now, a penalty is seen as enough punishment

Probably because it was judged as foul play, not serious foul play. The rule is pretty clear in the case of Basham's challenge.

SERIOUS FOUL PLAY

A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play.

Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.
