In the 1988/89 season, United, under Dave Bassett, were promoted from Division 3 to Division 2. The penultimate match of the season was a 2-2 draw at Wolves, which just about ensured promotion. United would not get promoted if they lost the last match of the season at Bristol City 6-0 or similar and if the other results went the wrong way. I think Port Vale had to win by a land slide.

In those days, only three subs were allowed and they were always outfield players. Bassett took the reasonable step of putting a goalkeeper ie Graham Benstead on the bench in case Simon Tracey was injured during the match. This would ensure some normality if Tracey was injured.

In the eventuality United lost 2-0 and Port Vale won, but by not enough and so United were promoted with Wolves.

I was at Ashton Gate on that day and I'm absolutely sure that Benstead played for the last minute of the match at centre-forward. I'm not sure it was reported as a substitution in the media, because it was so very late in the match.

Anyway, if Silent could confirm this or otherwise, my entry to this thread is playing a goalkeeper as a centre-forward.
I remember Benstead being on the bench and it being a novelty at the time but in my memory there were only 2 subs in those days and Benstead didn't come on. Tracey and Benstead did pose for a photo together before the game.

Thanks for that Cheets. My memory isn't completely shot.

Yes only two subs then in 1989, but I'm still convinced Benstead came on, even if it was only 30 secs.

One thing I remember about that game is that there was a bloke near me with a radio. Someone asked him "How's Port Vale getting on?" (Port Vale were 3rd with GD 16 inferior to United). The bloke with the radio, completely deadpan, replied "They're winning 16-0."

David Weir at manager.............(apologies if already been said).

I wasnt at the match as I was the captain of my cricket team that summer (I Missed the Swansea home game too) and I do not remember reading any reports of Benstead coming on in the match

I give up. Two one. My memory is shot after all.

However if I ever speak to Bassett or Benstead and they confirm it, I'll be back. :(

I actually saw Bassett at Wimbledon too, but too late now.

The GD between the two teams in the morning before the final league matches were 12
