mine edwards and withe arguing on the pitch as bassets dons hammered us 5 0, also last game of season mervyn day in goal having a nightmare but at least saving a pen pitch invasion and crossbar getting broken

I think it was May 2, 1992 and the game was at Selhurst Park? Anyway, 0-3 down at half-time (ended 0-3) and one of the worst matches I've ever seen. I jumped in the car soon after half time to drive back to Sheffield. I was back in my local by around 7.45 and the resident pig piss taker (one of those who last went when Albert Quixall played) said 'I bet you're glad you didn't go.' He couldn't believe I'd got back so quick.

I was at the 1992 game. We were terrible. The penalty save was funny though. I also remember the reaction of their tannoy announcer when our fans broke the crossbar. He was not pleased (and rightly so).

I also saw zombie Wimbledon in the Selhurst Park double header in April 2003: drew 2-2 with Palace on the Saturday, lost 1-0 to Wimbledon on the Monday. Re-arranged game to ensure Brown wasn't suspended for the Cup final. It was the smallest league crowd to watch United since 1901 (about 1300) and a high proportion of people in the crowd were in suits - a lot came straight from work. Ben Doane broke his leg, which finished his United career, and Dean Windass gave one of his couldn't be bothered performances that became a big feature of the rest of the season (people forget about this when they complain we dropped him for the playoff final). Dropping 5 points in 2 games put the nail in our coffin for automatic promotion, but with the cup as a distraction Warnock had settled for the playoffs anyway, having won every playoff tournament he'd ever been in (ha!).

Was that the one where Wise missed the penalty on purpose?
I've always thought he missed it because he was embarrassed how superior Wimbledon had been!

Went to Wimbledon the last season they played at plough lane.Early nineties. A mate who lived in London at the time got us tickets for their end, there was a bar at top of stand so spent probably 80% of match in there. Can't remember much else, not a clue who won.

I think we drew at Plough Lane in 1991 to bring to an end our run of eight wins on the trot. Fash was leaping around playing volleyball. He gave away one penalty but did it again later on and, inexplicably, the ref waved play on. Fash sank to his knees looking gutted. I remember my dad saying "What's he playing at?" I wonder...

I was there. Stank like week old mackerel that game. Never seen a player disappointed not to have conceded a penalty. Everyone around me was screaming at the ref for not giving the 2nd one, for some reason I was watching Fashanu (probably couldn't believe what I was seeing) and he was genuinely disappointed a penalty wasn't given.

I might be wrong, but I seem to recall that we had Mervyn Day in goal for that game.

There is a clip of it on here somewhere. Similar to Jags, McEverley, O'Connell and the Gills lad - but he did it twice in one game. Might be memries playing up but didn't Fash start to appeal to the ref when he didnt give a penalty before thinking better of it?

I tweeted Kevin Gage about this incident recently after O'Connell's handball v Millwall and he insinuated its common knowledge that Fash "got a phone call" regarding the outcome of that game the night prior.

Day was in goal in the 1992 game when we lost 3-0. He had a shocking game but saved Fashanu's penalty. He played after Mel Rees got injured the week before, of course
I remember midway through half time a Blade jumped on the wall in the middle of the stand and tried to make a speech to make us cheer loudly for the Blades but the police quickly grabbed him and pulled him away!

We adapted the Alan Cork song for Mervyn Day, changing the words to "He's got grey hair but we don't care". After he had a nightmare first half the Blades fans behind him started singing "We all hate L**ds..."

The thread is titled memories of Wimbledon away.

A delivery job my first summer back from uni in 2000. I had a drop at the Oddbins warehouse in Wimbledon where there was always a long wait. I took a walk down to Plough Lane and looked through the wire gates. The stands were all still there but the grass was waist high.

Yes.
Thank You.
TOP MAN.

Been away for a few days, are we having an A-Z of clubs we've visited?

Looking forward to the "Memories Of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Wrexham, Wycombe Wanderers & York City" threads.

Wimbledon & AFC Wimbledon aren't the same club are they?

No they aren't.

No they aren't.

It's uncanny that we're talking about memories of Wimbledon when we're playing AFC Wimbledon tomorrow.
It really is a state of confusion when we have MK Dons who were Wimbledon, but moved to Milton Keynes, founded in 2004.

Wimbledon who won the FA Cup in 1988.

AFC Wimbledon who play in Wimbledon, but are a new club who have a history of just over 14 years.

So, two clubs who exist, one that doesn't, but both in some way claim to have history with the one that no longer exists?

Thank Christ Wolverhampton Wanderers haven't got this confusion. Is that the next club?

It wouldn't have made any difference to their style of play.

It wouldn't have made any difference to their style of play.

I remember hearing once that at Bramall Lane, Dave Bassett (ex-Wimbledon) used to get the ground staff to leave the grass longer in the corners so that when John Gannon (ex-Wimbledon) knocked a ball out there for Bryson or Bradshaw, it would stop dead rather than spin out of play.

During the Bassett-era at BDTBL, it was common to see the floodlights on throughout the night.
This was adopted from his days at Wimbledon, when three days/nights before every home match,
the frozen food (pies/pasties/hot dog sausages) was set out on trestle-tables on the pitch.
The heat generated from the floodlights was the quickest method of defrosting the food in time for the weekend.
As far as we're aware, the practice still exists at lower League clubs to this day.

This was part of the cutting room floor stories that failed to make the book, "Crazy Gang Days" auth. Sam Hamman.

What's your point?

Actually, scrap that, I don't care.

And if you go to Wimbledon looking for AFC Wimbledons ground tomorrow, you're going to be disappointed.

The point.
It's confusing, isn't it?
One club founded in 1889.
Two other clubs founded in the 21C, both having claims to the previous one.
I did say it was, I think you're confused too, yes?

We won't be in the near vicinity of Wimbledon tomorrow, we have a date at lunchtime in Glasgow to attend.
