Didn't think we deserved to go 1-0 down, O'Connell not jumping cost us. If he'd have jumped I think it'd have hit his head, but that said it was a decent free kick.

Finally got our own bit of luck at the end, but I think over the course of the game, the win was deserved, thought we shaded it throughout.

Shout out to Freeman also. Excellent throughout and deserved his goal.

Good 3 points. Had the better of the possession and a few nice link ups. Lacking a bit in the final 1/3rd still. But pleased with that.

We can at last see some progress!

I think the keeper should have been more central / man on the line. Wall can't jump everytime or people will smash a free kick under it

We finally saw the pressing that Wilder wants. We won the ball a lot in the middle, and what a treat it was to see centre halves coming forward with confidence.

Duffy and Lafferty misfired a little, but they look like off days for them. They will do better.

An excellent victory that should give us and the players a lot of confidence. Yes the penalty was lucky but after Millwall we were due.

Three points and thst is what matters, infuriating how many people were saying a draw would be a good result.

Sheffield United at Gillingham should always only be a good result if it's a win. Enough of let's respectful as to where we are, let's be Billy big bollocks against these no marks, that's the way Wolves, Leeds, Wendy approached it and they got up.

Do you think o'connell should have jumped I. The wall. Not seen you mention it

We've conceded 8 goals in the first half of games this season which is terrible. Needs to stop. Few games in and Landell coming in hopefully we will look more solid as we did second half today. Need to SHARPen up up top aswell then I can see us dipping teams 3-4.

It was that much of a perfect free kick, I doubt O'C jumping would have made any difference.

Credit to our lads that they didn't really threaten other than that bar the McDonald chance that Moore smothered with some top drawer keeping. I really like the confidence that Moore breathes into the defence. You can feel it

I thought we were excellent today, the fact that all we can complain about is Duffy's performance and the wall not jumping goes to show how much we've improved as a team.
Think Lavery will come in and replace Duffy. And Fleck for Coutts/Basham.

Why o why didn't we put a defender on the near post for their goal? The gap was massive and inviting to that Bradley Duck

Am I missing something here?
Only 2 things that I can see, first that side of the goal was where Moore wanted the free kick to be, but in the end it was too exceptional to deal with - he was mm's away from saving it - and 2nd, if you put a man on the post you invite the opposition into the 6 yard box and potential deflections.

I imagine you're right. I think the most interesting fight for a place will come at LCB with O'Connel and Wright. It's very satisfying to be talking about competition for places, finally.

Thought Duffy had a decent game, they seemed to shit themselves every time he got on the ball...

I know where you are coming from but that victory levels the historic score 10 wins apiece now with 7 draws. Bit of a bogey side for us, which makes the result all the more pleasing.

Dack was the quality player on the pitch and it was a great free-kick (bad place to concede one), yes O'Connell might have reached it/might not, similarly Simon Moore half a pace to his right might have got it. Whichever way I have more confidence in the new keeper and O'Connell did something we haven't seen since HM went, bringing the ball out. Freeman used the space he had really well - looked the best I have seen him for a long while. Sharp had a lacklustre game and looked short of pace but he did well for the assist and the penalty. A happy Sunday all in all :D

Fully deserved the win. We were the better side throughout and the overall performance was hugely encouraging aside from the result.

Stand out performances: Freeman and Coutts

Good cameo from Ebanks-Landell as well, looks a really useful defender. Good performances from everyone else as well. Pleasing to see the movement both on and off the ball and some understanding being developed. Very pleasing.

UTB

I know that Coutts has some making up to do after last season, but why the fuck would you want to replace him now after his recent excellent performances?
He fit in with a good overall winning team.

I would say that excellent is an exaggeration.

Sooner or later I'm hoping we'll cut out the odd array of misplaced passes, hugely overhit crosses and daft fouls.

But then we probably won't be in this division if we do...

comes with confidence again though
3 daft fouls in 90 minutes,is a big improvement
overhit crosses, should improve with use, lets face it we havent made many previously

Very good performance today. A way short of excellent, but very good nonetheless. We looked better in the middle of the park than I've seen us for ages. I do think we might lack that special something to open teams up, which is a bit of a concern as we concede at least a goal a game. I can't see anyone in the side who can conjure something from nothing, like Murphy could, or Dack did today but to be fair in this league you often don't need that. If we play like we did today we'll win more than we'll lose but I'm still not sure the team has quite enough.

That said, I think nearly everybody played well today. It's still not really happening for Duffy mind, which is disappointing because apparently he bossed it against Gillingham last year!

It was a solid win, and good to see the fight in the team to come from 1-0 down to get 3 points. Gillingham are a good side, they nearly got promoted last season, so it's a good result to go there and win away. They were set up strongly and had a lot of discipline. They didn't create that many decent chances, their only goal was a set piece, but they did defend well. It was a good quality football match, because we were doing 3 at the back and playing on the counter, there was plenty of push and pull in the game.

One thing about Gillingham's goal - It was entirely Moore's fault. The thing is, yes, OK it was a well placed free kick, but there wasn't a lot of pace on it, and the keeper nearly reached it. The reason he didn't was that he wasn't in the centre on the goal when the kick was taken. He needed to take a step or 2 to his right, and he would have reached it. End of the day, if you stand on one side, you're leaving the door open for the free kick to swing in uncontested on the other side. Also, it was the near side for Dack, which is easier as it takes a fraction of a second less to reach the goal, giving the keeper slightly less time to react. Surely you should be trying to get the shot to come across goal, therefore buying you more time and giving you the chance to reach it? It was disappointing to concede a goal right when we were on top in one of our best spells in the game.

I was quite happy with the way we won the ball consistently in midfield, something we've often failed to do in recent years. The players seem to be slowly getting their heads up and gaining confidence. I think we'll improve steadily. Wimbledon is the next game, they won yesterday but that's their only win this season. So we should be putting them away. 3 more points on Saturday would cancel out the poor start we had, and get us in the top half of the table.

One day a team will have the nerve to not assemble a wall. The first sight the goalie has of the ball with a wall is when it's rising above the players heads. Without a wall the keeper has sight of the ball far earlier and can react far quicker.

Surprised Duffy seems to be getting some criticism, he was quite influential today, playing in an unconventional system/position for him. Not everything came off for him but he set up a lot of our attacks with clever bits of play and neat passes. He played a big part in making the three in midfield work. He moved where he needed to be to get on the ball, he seems to do that quite naturally.

It wasn't that he played badly, but that his radar seemed a bit off - a few wayward shots (though one good effort) and crosses. Lafferty was the same. They'll both have better days.

The technique needed to score from that would be far simpler though. You'd just have people blasting it straight at goal with a far higher likelihood of being on target – a wall removes that from being an effective option.
