Chris Basham in centre mid

My issue with Basham is that I think he'd be better in a 3 with players to keep the ball around him ala fleck and coutts.

He's not a bad player (6 out of ten) every match but the issue is that he's gone from not being good enough when first signed to intergral to the side as we have been weakened of the last few years.

We don't really have ebough options to play 433 or 4231 as we are light in the centre of the park too. Be nice if whiteman staked a claim in the next few months as I liked what I saw of him.

Where did I say 'we're' fucking shit. Basham is. The rest of the team, barring the fact we don't have a leader at centre half, doesn't actually seem too bad. It's not promotion material though.

But you just keep pushing that made up agenda, if it makes you feel better.

I already feel better Danny ..... im not a Blade .

Thank you so much with your help in this matter

Whoever we sign as a defensive minded midfielder will be 'shit' once we've seen them a few times and analysed their weaknesses. Because they're a defensive midfielder in L1. If they weren't shit they'd be playing in a higher league and/or in a better position.

Bash is a nice lad but will never have the gumption to be a midfielder in a promotion team.
Symptomatic of the Club as a whole.
A nice Club but lacking the gumption to get higher than League 1.
Which is frustrating , to put it kindly.

Coutts is ok Kev, moving about like a 60 year old with arthritis, and Bash has the strength of a 6 week old kitten. Teams like Southend and Oxford have waltzed through our CM recently so I can't see Gillingham being a problem.

I will be disappointed if our problems in scoring goals continue. With Done, Lavery, Chapman and Scougall we do have movement and quick feet in the forward positions. Duffy will be vital for creativity, and Brooks may become an alternative to him as the season progresses. In Sharp and Clarke we have the experience and strength, although those two have to improve, and realise that our attacking rhythm has improved with a different, quicker type spearheading the attack. I'm not very impressed with their performances in the withdrawn central role either.
I'm excited by Brooks. Think he can become a big player.

Thing is Basham ain't a midfielder of any description. His best position is in defence where most of the game happens infront of him.

To be a midfielder you need a football brain, you need to take up the right positions in the right situations and make the right decisions at the right times. It's not the technical aspect, I can accept one poor technical midfielder in this league, it's the rest of his game that lacks to the point where it's unacceptable from a central midfielder. Gillingham will walk through us.

Would I have preferred to see another CM come in? Yes.
But Hussey's poor start has thrown a bit of a spanner in the works. I don't think CW initially expected to have to sign another LB but it appears he's had to make a choice between that and a CM and decided Hussey is much worse than Basham and so gone for the LB. It's not ideal.

Wilder obviously sees something there and i would say that in Midfield, we would need just ONE player, not THREE.

I would say we still lack more than just a central midfield player.
We could do with that leader at the back, and we are still very light in wide areas.

Anybody who thinks this midfield is good enough to get us in the top 6 is deluding themselves.

With the exception of Fleck, all of the possible central midfield players have demonstrated they are not good enough individually or as a unit to create, stop or score enough goals to win us promotion. And this is not small sample size. All have played 50 to 100 games. There is no reason to suspect any of them will improve.

Unless Fleck is the second coming of Michael Brown circa 2003 our high water mark with this bunch is about 8th.

I would say I am amazed that Wilder didn't deal with this glaring problem, which to me was our biggest problem, but nothing surprises me about United any more.

You do, but less so as the whole game happens infront of you. It's no surprise his better games have been in defence, whereas I can count his impressive centre mid displays on one hand. He looked good at right back, I'd rather he competed with Freeman for that role to be honest.

Diagouraga would have been perfect, transfer listed at Leeds. EXACTLY what we need(ed). But I suppose we'll have to foray into the free agent market.

Literally what on earth are you on about?

I don't say we are fuckin shit in every post , I want to see us in the meadowhall league , I'm satisfied with our current league 1 status , I think CW has dealt astutely in the transfer market and I can see only one ..... yes just one , area where I'm a tad concerned .

Oh .... and I actually believe that this side shows more promise than any other side in the last 4 seasons .

Therefore I'm not a Blade .

You helped me with this diagnosis Danny , don't be so shy :D

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas looks far too good for us to stop on the basis of the highlights I've seen this season.

This side shows more promise? We have had our worst start for 20 years, and it's in the old third.
Unless Wilder can turn piss into wine and feed 20000 people with a half loaf of warburtons 50/50 and a couple of fish fingers we have absolutely no chance of 6th upwards.
We have a glaring hole in central midfield, we are yet to see if this kid is any better than the scary Hussey at left back, we STILL need a leader at centre half and we literally only have 2 wingers in the squad.

I'm glad you're not our manager. Let's just put it that way.

When in the mood he's dangerous, but he had scored six in his last eight before the game against this set of world beaters:

Let's hope for something similar!

I'm excited by Brooks. Think he can become a big player.
Danny, as an aside I am interested to know what sort of player Brooks is, is he box to box? Holding? I know nothing about him but people on here seem to rate him, is he ready to step up to the first team now?

Good ball player mate. Intelligent, good mover of the ball and always looks forward, it's his first thought. Bit lightweight but I think he's already bigger than Scougs!

Depending on where we are in the table helps to rearrange this sentence about Basham.

Let's suppose we are top two (stop laughing), and are home and dry for promotion, the chat about Basham would be......(in an upbeat voice)

"...well not much skill, but the lad gives 100% every game..."

and if we are bottom four and staring into the abyss it would be.....(in a depressed voice)

"..well, he gives 100%, but not much skill......."

Because he is the same player in both cases. I have said before, that the Basham of away at Barnsley, playing CM, charging into their box time after time after time, seems to have gone, along with any confidence he had. That Chris Basham is the one CW needs to find and coax out, not the one who gets to the edge of the box and panics and dithers, desperately looking to off load the ball to anyone, just so he doesn't have to have a shot.

Chris, just have a shot!, get into the box and if no one around you to pass to, take the shot yourself! It's not rocket science and the law of averages says that one of them will go in!

Skillful and clever, confident enough to try a dribble. Left footed. Released by Man City when he was shorter than Reed, now he's about 5'11. Still light weight, but could hopefully start pushing for a squad spot soon. Could play wide or as a number 10, in the future maybe even central midfield.

So his worst case scenario is another scrappy midget to add to the collection.

And his best case scenario is we sell him next summer.

No idea who Diagouraga is. So I can't comment.
Based on last season I can count every player's impressive performances on one hand. I thought Basham was OK under Clough, not great but OK.

Interesting comments you both agree! I look forward to watching him soon.

Danny , if I in anyway way shape or form thought you even remotely resembled a cogent , rational and well balanced poster I'd gladly discuss your views in a reciprocal manner . But you're not , so I won't .

Keep saying we are fucking shit and any one who disagrees isn't a Blade ..... its far more becoming .

Agreed, a proper "footballer", possibly the most talented youngster over the last few years, has undoubted skill, will take a man on, can tackle, dribble, great crosser of the ball and will go for goal.

Not sure he is 5ft 11" Bergen, but definitely taller than when he arrived. Needs around 5 pounds of solid muscle on his frame to give him added strength.

I'd say look at the players that we've brought in - Chapman, particularly hasn't been used much yet. Lavery and Done, if used as strikers may change the dynamic up front, meaning that the wide options may well be different/ used differently

The leaders at the back may take time to come to the top, but from what i hear, Jake Wright is a leader and we haven't seen anything of Lafferty or Ebanks-Landell yet.

Basham is a 5 or 6 out of 10 every game, a player that's filling a gap rather the a natural midfielder
He can be summed up by saying that he does everything he can, but he's a rubbish footballer. He never, ever shoots, but I think if he did, somebody outside walking their dog on shoreham street would be killed.

If you could either argue your point well or even use grammar in the right way, I'd gladly discuss blades related news with you. But you can't, so I won't.

So in sum ..... We are fuckin shit and if you don't agree you're not a Blade .

Do correct me if I'm wrong ;)
