True Rodley,

Hence why although Wigan are a small club I can totally understand why he'd prefer Wigan over both Sheff Utd or MK Dons.

However if you have 2 teams (us and Scunthorpe) in the same division you decide which team is more likely to get promoted and is more likes to stay there once promoted.

Salary levels (bonuses) are a big attraction but also things like location, training facilities, stadium, reputation, ambition, manager have an effect too. If he joins Scunny then good luck to them, their Chairman must have done a fantastic job at selling the club.

I'd prefer to play to a large audience in a great stadium, most people would.
Also most players are ambitious and prefer to play for ambitious clubs going for promotion.

So regards your question I'd rather play for Bournmouth in the PL.
It's top class football and you get to play at some great stadiums and large crowds.

Of course salary plays a part too but for me it's not the most important.
Job satisfaction and career progression is probably more important.
Taking of your bias glasses a move to Sheff Utd is seen as a better career move than going to Scunthorpe. Or do you disagree? Ha

Think you must be in the minority if playing for clubs with massive support like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Dortmund etc in great stadia isn't an attraction.

I'm playing devils advocate as I tend to do. This is a forum at the end of the day.

You said why would anybody want to play for Scunthorpe over United (Sheffield) as we get ~16k extra fans. You then also said that you would choose Bournemouth over United, Bournemouth get ~6-7k less fans each week.
Following that, you said you can understand players joining Wigan over United. That's due to their current position in the pyramid i.e. nothing to do with crowds.

If both Scunthorpe and United were in for Morsy last January, which club would he have chosen? Scunthorpe finished 8pts above us and narrowly missed out on the play offs remember, a damn more successful season than us. If Morsy had been there, would they have got that final spot?

I'm not sure what you want...
Do you want to play your home games infront of 20k as opposed to 4k?
Do you want to play infront of 4k but in a higher division?

To be fair, Sheffield United do have more potential than Scunthorpe, we also have more chance of promotion than Scunthorpe. If I was Morsy, all rose-tinted glasses aside, I would choose us over Scunthorpe if that is indeed what his choices are.

Flipside to that, you have McFadzean joining Burton. Let's face it, he's getting relegated. Nothing to do with attendance in his decision to sign for them, it's money OR the Championship. End of. Fast forward 12 or 24 months, Sheffield United will be higher up the pyramid than Burton Albion.

You sound like a pig. Attendances mean sweet FA. Bournemouth's ground holds 11,000. Would you rather play for them or us?

Last season:
Scunthorpe - 7th, 74pts, 13pts behind Wigan.
Sheff Utd - 11th, 66pts, 21pts behind Wigan.

That "may" sway things.

You sound like a cap-doffing, forelock-tugging Blade with the traditional S2 inferiority complex: it is possible to take pride in being Sheffield United without 'sounding like a Pig'. Why should our views be conditioned by reference to them?

We do get fantastic crowds. Unbelievable given our lamentable record of failure. We have the potential to be a massive club. I don't give a fuck about the Pigs or what they say and I'm certainly not going to change the way I express myself to accommodate them.

Because he insinuated that he should choose Sheffield United over Scunthorpe United because we get more fans. He then said he'd play for Bournemouth over Sheffield United.

For example, if Sevilla and Real Betis were both bidding for you, who would you sign for? Sevilla probably as they are a massive club. Real Betis are based in Seville and have more fans. In fact Real Betis are the 5th most supported club in Spain.

banging on about attendances mean sod all. We took 4.5k to Bolton whoopdie doo.. We lost.

P.S. Morsy would be a total nob if he chose Scunthorpe over us!!

Is this a reply to me? It doesn't address anything I said. I'm confused....

You said - Why should our views be conditioned by reference to them?

Because Wednesday are obsessed by attendances. That was my reference to them. The rest is to hit home my point that attendances mean fuck all.

By the way, Scunthorpe are 3pts above us at present ;)

Okay. We are potentially a massive club with unbelievable crowds given the circumstances. What obsesses Wednesday and what words and phrases they might use, is of no consequence whatsoever to me and certainly doesn't place such views off limits.

The present league table is an illusion. It's a bit silly to even publish one at this stage. They never used to before the days of instant media.

I would choose us over Scunthorpe any day of the week. I was merely opening up the discussion as clearly attendances win leagues. :D

I understand what you say. It was the 'sound like a pig' that I take issue with. The idea that their obsession should preclude us from discussing certain topics smacks of an inferiority complex and allowing our views to be conditioned by them. Fuck that! :)

Close then?
Going on what marsh said yesterday. He initially said today but then said it could be either today or tomorrow. There's no reason to doubt him but I can't imagine it with Wilder saying just the other day that we've showed no interest in him.

Tufty sounds quite upbeat about recruitment in his interview today. Giddings has slightly misrepresented what he said though. There is certainly no promise of a player in before Saturday.

Interesting, in his interview after Crewe he did say that he was going to try for at least 1 incoming before the weekend.

If I have one main gripe with Wilder it's the fact that he's had more than enough time to assemble the squad with all the signings he needs and yet we're one game in to the season still 4 key players short.

he's signed 7 players !

The good news is that at least he knows what he needs mate, by contrast with last year. I believe he's trying really hard to recruit in the areas we all seem to agree on. I expect 3 or 4 in by the end of the window, but as you say, the sooner the better.

Maybe I've been misunderstood.

Obviously attendances aren't the be all and end all BUT they are a factor.

Players have a list of factors to consider
1: League they are playing in is probably the most important. Hence why I had no complaints when Maguire choose Hull City over us and why Murphy wanted to go to Brighton.
2: Salary and length of contract is up there as the most important too. For some it's the bottom line.

Club ambition, club potential, training facilities, location to home, stadium. Etc
Attendances can often be linked to potential and ambition because usually the clubs with the bigger attendances have more money and more ambition and tend to do better. However Sky tv money means it's not so clear cut.

Regards us and Scunny we're in the same division so point 1 isn't s factor.
He's probably already on big wages at Wigan and will want them at least matched.
Maybe Scunny will offer big wages than us

But on all the other factors we clearly beat Scunthorpe.

Most players are ambitious and want join the most ambitious clubs, so their Chairman must have some amazing charisma and come up with a great story to sell the club for a player to join SUFC over SUFC.
It's not big headed..... It's common sense.

I think he knew all along he'd probably be losing Che and that would create some funds, but as TFT states, 7 players in. More importantly shipped out some shite, listed the other underperformers, not his fault nobody wants them, surely the Scottish Leagues can't be that full!

He's got a massive turnaround of players to sort, we've been signing too many less than average players for too long, thankfully that's changing, but it was never going to happen overnight.

Also picture the scene if you're an agent, would you want you client going to a club who have been stuck in League 1 for this long, apart from the money, it can't be easy selling us to potential players, "Yeah go to United they're going nowhere, big ground though, oh and if you start a game a bit dodgy that 20k crowd will be straight on your back, remember when you played there against them last season...."

Or go on a no pressure move

A portion of a single transfer window.
A portion? He had all of the transfer window and pretty much the perfect relatively empty template to work from so in my eyes it's slightly dissapointing there's still 4 players to get one game into the season. He wasted 2 slots of the 7 he brought in though sadly, in Wright and Wilson. All new signings should have been for the first team and first team only in my view. Anyway they're the only real gripes.

I solved the code but

You are baffled like the Germans were!
I think that I have solved it but it is much too windy here to send my smoke signals!
