The season we finished 7th involved an absolute novice manager. Dare I use the sale of another key player in McDonald as another reason? Or are player sales just something we can 'cope' with. Just a reminder we finished in the grand position of 11th in League One last year.
we finished 11th down totally to Adkins failure to invigorate a squad that finished 5th

Agreed. But surely this was also largely due to an incompetent defence including McEveley and Collins and missing Maguire

Are you saying he isn't better than any of the cbs we have had for the last 2 years? That's the player that left, not the improved player you talk about

footballs a results business

with maguire 67 points 7th
without him 71 points 5th

its a team game, one player left
we improved

not blaming him saying he was bad loved the lad . but we coped

all players can be replaced
not by an individual at times but a more balanced team
alone no one came close , but we covered his loss

We conceded 7 more goals the season after he left.

Sorry to interrupt this argument but going back to the Twitter issue and Brayford, didn't CW mention that players were to be asked to sign up to a code of conduct regarding social media ? Maybe this is the reason some players are closing accounts like they are.

hes improved being with better players playing against better players
whos to say he would have with us
Come off it. I thought to begin with you were just your usual dazed self, but even given time to think about it you're still peddling the line that we haven't missed Maguire.

Are you on the Sangria, or permanatly daft?

I didnt say we hadnt missed maguire
the league table did

No it didn't.

Your performance in the league is dependant on many factors, both positive and negative.

Losing your best defender and then being "unanimously" considered week in that position up until present day would be considered a negative factor, in every corner of the universe other than la la land.

My 8 year old daughter got it when I explained it, but I suspect I'll be much less lucky here.

getting more points wins hands down
plus we scored a lot more , better distribution
To achieve any consistent comparison you do need a lot of external factors to be consistent.

You are including the aberration which was Weir's tenure. Didn't we get 5 points from 11 matches?

At least compare Clough vs Clough.

Even discounting the 4 points Morgan gained, Clough with Maguire got 58 points from 33 matches = 1.75 points per game. This goes against 71 from 46 = 1.54 points per game.

That would equate to almost 10 points per season in terms of difference.

plus the average shoe size was 9 and a half under Weir and rose to 10 under Clough
the premise stand , we adjusted without maguire and improved
something that we sadly didnt do after clough

we cant alter facts
we coped well enough without maguire to gain a play off spot
its pure speculation to say we might have finished higher ,
but even with Maguire we may have got 3rd and still only been in the play offs

but as a club , we got in the mix, without him

Nobody should be comparing 2013/14 to 2014/15 due to the disaster that was appointing David Weir. Let's use a better sample:

2013/14 under Clough: 39 points in 30 games (1.93 ppg, equivalent to 89 points for the season). 26 goals conceded in those 30 games (0.87 goals per game)
2014/15 under Clough: 71 points in 46 games (1.54 ppg). We conceded 53 goals that season (1.15 goals per game)

We were far, far better under Clough with Maguire in the team.

Are you saying we were a better team after we left?

The league positions you quote are skewed entirely by the Weir debacle. We missed Maguire massively and there's every chance we'd have gone up had he stayed. Same with Blackman and to a slightly lesser extent Murphy.

where do I mention sharp

results improved after maguire left
again you make out like we are the only club that sells its better players
which is pure fantasy

wigan sold a bundle of decent championship players on relegation , replaced them
all teams have weaker players
thats why they are in league one
our best 11 is weaker than a championships clubs 11
so has more weaker players

Results most certainly did not improve after Maguire left. We went from a run in the spring of 2014 of being almost unbeatable and inpenetrable to being very average after his departure. Anyone with eyes in their head who spent any time watching the team could see that.

Also, I have never said we are the only club that sells it's better players. You're just lying about that. I've acknowledged clubs like Chesterfield and Swindon do it. I've also pointed out that teams with genuine aspirations to get out of this league (pigs, udders, dirties etc.) tend to stand a lot firmer than we do. That's probably why we're still here long after they've gone.

What's the deal with John at the moment? I saw his tweet and saw interviews of the Wigan managers talking about him, has he actually gone or what?

Why?

Seriously Balhers, anyone who thinks the team improved as a result of Maguire going (not least because of the timing) is absolutely bonkers. End of.
Luckily it seems to be down to one person!

Normally I'll let the idiocy slide but sometimes I just have to step in.

You obviously don't pay that much attention to the movement of players, do you? Brayford is a Blade, he'll continue to be a Blade as long as Wilder wants him at the club. Should the manager have a change of mind I imagine we'd all know who leaves and who stays. Hope that clears up any confusion on your part.

Yeah mate, he's gone back to Cardiff, but reading Jim Phipps' tweets we'd love him back. That will never happen.

Reyt,

First off - this thread is far too long for me to begin playing catch up with it. And it seems to have gone off on several bloomin' tangents. Anyone care to summarise what's been said?

Secondly - this happened:
