Our best ever penalty taker

Silent Blade. Any stats on Keith Eddy. I remember him taking a few and can't recall him missing.

Edit: just seen them above. Knew he was pretty good.
His missed penalties were v Liverpool (h) in April 1974 (Clemence save), v L**ds (a) Sept 1974 (hit post) and v Man U (h) Dec 1975 (hit the bar but Deardem scored from the rebound).

His first two penalties for us were unusual. Came on as sub either at the last minute of extra time of the 1972 Watney Cup final (I was at the match and didnt see him come on during extra time) or after the final whistle and scored our 2nd penalty in the shootout. His second penalty was in the 2-2 draw at home to Spurs. Everyone was expecting Woodward to take the penalty (he was the leading 1st division marksman at the time) but got a shock when they realised Eddy was taking it and some of them booed at him! He did score but said after that match that he felt "narked" by the booing

Apologies if this thread has been done before but after seeing Blackman's pen against us on Wednesday it got me thinking. I was just getting into football when Duffield was about but in my lifetime it has to be Blackman I think

Steve Simonsen

Complete Records in 1999 says Furniss missed only once from his 17 attempts and then the revised edition says 17/15. He missed one in the 7-3 win against Wendy in Sept 1951. What was the other?

Doesn't say in the book, I'd have to trawl through the notes in The first 100 years book to find out!

I should also add that the information I supplied doesn't include penalty shoot-outs.

Jose Baxter's record is 11/12 for us. Missing in the 1-0 win over Crewe in 2014.

Say what you like about Jose, but he was an excellent penalty taker, quite varied but always struck hard and in the corners. Don't rate Billy much as a penalty taker especially after witnessing the Colchester game last season.

When we signed Mike Trusson from Plymouth a few months later, Tony Pritchett recalled in the Green Un that Trusson scored a stunner in our 4-1 defeat

As I was looking through, 1979/80 was quite interesting in that the following all scored penalties in that season :-

I. Benjamin 1 v Swindon Town
J. Matthews 1 v Exeter City
J. Bourne 4 v Oxford, Brentford, Plymouth, Grimsby
J. McPhail 1 v Mansfield
T. Kenworthy 1 v Oxford

In addition to the following missed penalties :-

I. Benjamin v Doncaster (LC1)
T. Kenworthy v Plymouth

I was always confident when Jagielka took them – did he score all he took after the Unsworth/Hulse/Webber misses? Might have just been a couple – had he been on them from the start of the season, we might still be there now...

Yes, he did score them all.

The mention of Hulse/Unsworth puts me in mind of something else: United missing 2 pens in the same game (not in shootouts). I can think of the following examples:

Unsworth/Hulse v the 0-0 draw Blackburn in 2006/7 (and Blackburn also missed one, of course)
Bryson/Bradshaw in the 2-0 3rd round cup win v Bournemouth in 1990 (Bryson following up to score: Paul Stancliffe, of all people, got to the rebound first, crossed, and Bryson headed it in)
Jim Iley in a 2-2 draw in the 1950's (I think the only time the same player has missed 2 in the same game for us: Iley missed another 2 weeks later).

Has this happened any other time? Billy Sharp nearly did it against Colchester last year but got to retake one.

I can also think of at least 1 other game aside from Blackburn where both sides missed a penalty - the 4-2 win at Oxford in 1997-8, where Deano hit the post for us and Nigel Jemson missed for them (though he followed up to score after Tracey made the save). We were awarded another pen, which Fjortoft scored. I assume both sides missing has happened in other games though none spring immediately to mind.

Statistically from "The Complete Record" (up to 2012/13)....

Players with 100%

Peter Duffield 7/7 (seven taken, seven scored)
Mitch Ward 6/6
Jeff Bourne 5/5
David Cotterill 5/5
Andy Gray 4/4
J. Docherty, C.Asaba, P. Ndlovu, D.Henderson all 3/3

From the players who've taken 10 or more penalties for the Blades, the best % records are :-

Tony Kenworthy 22/20 90.9%
Fred Furniss 17/15 88.2%
Bob Benson 23/20 87.0%
James Beattie 13/11 84.6%

Other notables...

A. Woodward 25/21 84.0%
C. Morris 54/42 77.8%
K. Eddy 17/14 82.4%
D. Whitehouse 14/11 78.6%

Interestingly both Michael Brown and Jack Lester scored 8 out of 9 penalties (88.9%)

Not sure where Baxter or Blackman would be in the list.

So if Brown had scored THAT penalty at Cardiff not only could things have gone differently that day (probably not) but he could be remembered as one of our greatest ever with 9/9.

Defo not John Ryan. Missed 2 in consecutive games: Portsmouth away Gillingham at home. December 1980 I think.

Great shout that to be fair. I'm still going Blackman because he was so confident that you in the stands couldn't help but feel confident

I was the opposite with him. Despite his record that stuttering run up is destined to end in disaster one day. If 'keepers just learned to stand there until he strikes it then they'd save more than they let in.

Duffield, Ward or Cotterill for me.

He liked to attack on the right doing unnecessary step overs allowing the opponents more time to re-group. Not a team player

well, replacing him with a combination of Forte, Poleon and Ironside didn't go very well, did it?

You can't fault Blackman's penalties - and how nice to see a striker who isn't afraid to take them eh?;)

In the years I've been watching I'd offer up the following as best penalty takers...

Alan Woodward
Tony Kenworthy
Nick Blackman
James Beattie
Steve Simonsen

err..

no, not that last one.
