I love this idea that premiership clubs are now so rich they will be spunking £5m over every bang average youngster that the locals are frothing at the mouth over.
Bang average his just that. A million for DCL is top money. £3M for Adams is doing a deal money.
Us moving forward isn't about starting to get the headline the figures people pluck up from one in every 500 transfers. It's about accepting the inevitable, screwing the most out of it (£1m for DCL is a right squeeze), but investing the proceeds wisely.
It's the last sentence we continually fuck up on, despite the myth that we give everyone away.

Great opening post FTPE. Completely agree. Lots of positivity in your post. Imagine the potential in Adams and DCL and what they could offer us in years to come. What's more, I reckon there could be a partnership to strike up there, they are young, enthusiastic and becoming good mates off the field - they could strike up a real know how of each other's games.

PL clubs are splurging hand over fist, now more than ever. Even in championship, players (such as Ross McCormack and Andre Gray) are moving for sums that 10 years ago would have made even the richest clubs wince. If you're implying PL clubs don't take large gambles on unproven players, then frankly, you're wrong.
Secondly, I personally don't think Che's average either. His physical ability certainly isn't. Maybe he's not a £5m player, but he's not too far off. Like I've mentioned before, being strong, fast and English drastically inflates a players value.

£1,000,000 for DCL is entirely consistent with premier league clubs chucking money at high risk gambles. He's shown nothing near that worth.
£3,000,000 for Adams doesn't suggest he is average.
What's out of kilter is not my assessment of how rich the premier league is, it's many peoples extrapolation from a small amount of young promise to certainty that they will get better.
Our youth cup final team of a few years ago was littered with this promise.

Maybe it's my stupidity, but I can't understand the part of your post about Adams, I can't tell if you think he's average or not, or what you think his value may be.
As for people assuming potential means they will definitely get better, I agree that a lot fans do get swept up in the hysteria of a player, and like you point out, the FAYC team is a good example. What I will point out is that PL boards must get absorbed in the same hysteria as well as we managed to get £1m for Slew.
My point being, that rightly or wrongly, and regardless of what you or I think a player is worth, PL clubs make expensive gambles on young English players and we would be foolish not to play the game and utilise this.

I think we are arguing around in circles, and broadly agree. I think Adams is a good player - worth probably ten times what we paid. A million and a half would seem fair value, but I'd expect offers around double that because of the crazy money around.
DCL - a different issue. I've seen zero and my money would be on him having very lower league future (of course, who knows?). I think £1,000,000 bids would represent utter madness, and we should do that deal.

What do we pay the lad now? £4k a week?
So the considerations are something like this:
Firstly, is he worth £2m, is it a good price? What will he be worth in another year?
In the past we sold Slew who was worth zero thereafter and Walker who was worth probably double what we got after a year. If he comes good then we will lose him after a year anyway but for far more money, maybe that £5m. If he has a bad season and displays poor attitude again he can be worth nothing.
In the meantime if we hold him to his contract we surely have to at least double his wages to say £8k a week. Would he sign any more than a year's contract?; I doubt it when he knows he could be getting £12k elsewhere. Do we pay him £12k?, that would get us three players for this important season.
In August 2015 Adams signed a 3 year contract with the option of an extra year. If Adams is any good that is worth a lot to the club.
My personal view is that Adams has a lot to prove and I'm not sure he has the speed of thought or the touch to succeed in the Premier League. He needs time to get the ball under control and often has a heavy touch and he often plays the wrong ball. He can learn a lot this next 12 months and playing alongside Sharp, Fleck and Duffy can bring him on no end. Over the next year he will grow up a lot too but he really should not have shown poor attitude last year and it might just be in him. These things matter.
In the end a big club has cash to burn and every player has a price. Up the money to £3m and £15k a week and it gets beyond our control.
Personally I don't think it will get that high and I'd be surprised at £2m even.

So to clarify you value adams at 500k, with all due respect thank fuck you are no where near our transfer dealings. If che stays and it's a big if he will get above 15+ goals next season as the squad is, with squad improvement could be 20+. He managed 13 last season in what was a very poor team under a manager who offered nothing. If he stays and was to achieve those figures which I have no doubt he would,your looking at a 10mil player yes 10mil. So for me for it to be a good deal for the club I'd say 5mil is not far off given current tv money floating around the pl.

Yeah, and to be honest, neither yours nor my valuation counts for much. Whatever his true value may be you can bet he will go for half of that if our board have anything to do with it.
DCL is a tricky one, I agree that he hasn't shown an awful lot so far, but with so few games it's hard to tell. He's highly thought of by the coaching staff though, so who knows?
Both Walker and Slew played barely any games with us before being sold, by selling early we lost potential millions with walker, but had Blackburn's pants down with Slew. It's a lottery really.

All opinions and thank goodness we don't have to make the decisions. I actually think DCL could be the better player with a better attitude and a better footballing brain.
Given a following wind and another 12 months they would rip this league apart and just could be good enough for the Championship; we'll never know in all likelihood.

Yeah as someone who developed an interest in the game during the Deane and Agana glory years, I've spent most of my life longing for that sort of strike force again. I enjoyed watching Kabba and Webber but that was more one or the other alongside Shipperly. Evans and Cresswell were effective but the relationship was a bit lopsided. I'd love to see if we can mould DCL and Che into a strike force that can scare the crap out of defences for years to come.
