As I've said before maybe Long is pissed off that he might have to earn his money now and work rather than playing in a team of wankers who breeded mediocrity and failure.
 
He should want to sign the contract there and then and if he doesn't, he's clearly not fully committed. In which case he's not got the all in attitude the manager bangs on about.

I just can't believe, in fact I certainly can, we're being weak enough to wait around like mugs while George Long, a bang average-poor third division footballer decides what he wants to do.
 
Long's a decent keeper but not in the same league of some of our previous goalies eg Tracey, Kelly Kenny. He's a decent shot stopper but doesn't command his box like the aforementioned three and isn't as eager to look for a quick release. Not as vocal either. Not much difference between him and Howard imo.

Though, as has been mentioned, goalies mature later. Kaspar Schmeichel being a prime example.

Bill , agree with that one. . I have always said a top goalkeeper is as important as a top goal scorer .

Can Long guarantee saving us 12 points . No don't think so . Ok we can go on forever about not having any centre backs previous seasons , but Long didn't go out of his way to correctly organise his defence .

I totally agree. He is a decent shot stopper but that's only 30% of the job IMO

I've been one of his supporters throughout the season. But am I distraught that he may be departing? Hardly.

A decent goalie (boosted by the fact that he's "one of ours"), who has most certainly improved.

But is he a match-winner or match-saver a significant number of times a season? Is he likely to be in any way outstanding?

I like the guy, & I'll certainly wish him well if he goes, will keep tabs on his progress, & will happily applaud him on any return to the Lane. But, sorry to say, Wilder's approach mirrors my own views when push comes to shove: don't mind if he stays, don't mind if he goes. Hardly a ringing endorsement. And Smith excites me, unfaithful bastard that I am!

George was thrown in at the deep end come back having turned out for toss teams like Oxford and Motherwell but 100% improvement last season.
We we rue getting shut if we do.

I suppose it'll all depend on just how good this Smith lad is (if all these many rumours are true, & we do end up getting him).

There'll be a pretty direct comparison able to be made between the two: exact same heights & very similar ages (Smith's just about exactly one year older than George, but with significantly less experience).

All those on here having a pop at George are judging him on his performances prior to last season.

From the youtube videos I have seen, Smith made more mistakes than Long last season and that was in a squad that smashed the back doors off the 2nd division. Long for the most part was behind Collins, McEverley and Edgar.
 
I like George he's not our starting gk next season even if he signs but ffs how can you not stop them LONG shots seriously watch them back good luck George much improved thanks for service at least tha tried pal

Very difficult to tell from Youtube clips. But a couple of worrying moments on high balls (on clips showing Northampton victories).

Two young goalies, with limited experience, both learning how to deal with the high ball and making mistakes along the way? (Just like DeGea's been doing over recent years at a higher level?)

As mentioned previously, if we withdraw the contract offer and he goes elsewhere, we will no longer be entitled to compensation. Nothing to do with being weak. Just basic economics. I do hope though that privately, Wilder has given Long a deadline whereby if he doesn’t sign, we will bring in another keeper and Long will be sat on the bench.
 
So the middle of last week when asked about it Wilder said they were trying to get it resolved "tomorrow", on Saturday he said that he had "over the weekend" to consider his options...

At what point does this start to look like we are, in Wilder's words, fannying about? Or are we just delaying till after the kit launch so the player contingent present doesn't look quite as sparse?

I think that, as above, we've gotten our answer from George. We can't officially tell him to jog on then as we wouldn't get any compensation. New GK needed
