I've been reading through some of the recent threads about the retained list and potential transfers. I've also heard a few people mention that we could assemble a promotion challenging team on free transfers, so below I've used our current players and realistic transfers (All but one being a free transfer) to make up a squad consisting of at least 2 players in each position.

I must stress that i don't think it's realistic that we will release all of our out of contract players, and sign a load more. This is because the term "free" transfer is a little misleading: Out of contract players often expect larger signing on fees due to the club saving on a transfer fee, for this reason I think we'll end up re-signing some of our out of contracts and a limited number of players will come in. Still though, all a bit of fun!

Goalkeepers
George Long (New contract)
Joe Lewis (Out of contract - Cardiff)

Right backs
John Brayford (Still in contract)
Keiron Freeman (Still in contract)

Left backs
David Buchanan (Out of contract - Northampton)
Graham Kelly (Still in contract)

Centre backs
John Egan (Out of contract - Gillingham) *
Curtis Nelson (Out of contract - Plymouth)
Ryan Tafazoli (Out of contract - Mansfield)
David Edgar (Out of contract - Birmingham)

Right wingers
Scott Wagstaff (Out of contract - Bristol City)
Flynn (New contract - Reduced terms)

Left wingers
Anthony Forde (Out of contract - Walsall) *
Graham Carey (Out of contract - Plymouth)

Central Midfielders
Chris Basham (Still in contract)
Louis Reed (Still in contract)
Shaun Williams (Out of contract - Milwall)
Alex Gilbey (Out of contract - Colchester) *
Romaine Sawyers (Out of contract - Wasall)

Forwards
Billy Sharp (Still in contract)
Che Adams (Still in contract)
Matt Done (Still in contract)
John Akinde (Fee req. - Barnet) *

Despite the list being a little ambitious, and unrealistic for reasons stated above, the players marked with * are players I think we should make real efforts to sign: John Egan was in the team f the year, Anthony Forde is a real exciting winger, Alex Gilbey is 21 y/o goal scoring midfielder and John Akinde is a big man up top who's just got 23 for Barnet.

Any suggestions/corrections?

Oh, and the above list assumes we can find buyers for Marc McNulty, Stefan Scougall, James Wallace and Martin Woolford. Making it even more optimistic o_O

Using rumours, common sense and players we are likely to be interested in or have a chance of signing this is what I'd like to see:

Goalkeepers

George Long (New contract)
Jason Leutwieler (Out of contract - Shrewsbury)
Aaron Ramsdale (Young Talent)

Right backs
John Brayford (Still in contract)
Keiron Freeman (Still in contract)

Left backs
David Buchanan (Out of contract - Northampton)
K Wallace (Still in contract, and if injury rumours aren't true)
Graham Kelly (Young Talent)

Centre backs
John Egan (Out of contract - Gillingham) *
Dan Burn (Out of contract - Fulham)
Ryan Tafazoli (Out of contract - Mansfield)
David Edgar (Out of contract - Birmingham)

Right wingers
Ricky Holmes (Fee - Northampton)
James Henry (Out of contract - Wolves) / Mark Duffy (Out of contract - Birmingham)

Left wingers
Anthony Forde (Out of contract - Walsall) *
Graham Carey (Out of contract - Plymouth)

Central Midfielders
Chris Basham (Still in contract)
Louis Reed (Still in contract)
Ben Whiteman (Young Talent)
Alex Gilbey (Out of contract - Colchester)
Ed Upson (Out of contract - Millwall)
Yaser Kasim (Fee - Swindon)

Forwards
Billy Sharp (Still in contract)
Che Adams (Still in contract)
Matt Done (Still in contract)
Marc McNulty (Still in contract)
James Hanson (Fee - Bradford) / Marc Richards (Fee - Northampton)
DCL (Young Talent)

There you have a squad of 23/24 first team players with young talent to call upon when needed.

Ricky Holmes is a good shout and an obvious choice for Wilder I'd imagine.

I'm very happy to see we might play with wingers for a change and actually have some quality from out wide :)
Be it the 4 you chose, or 4 from the 5 i chose or anything inbetween, they're all quality and all match winners. The best sides in this division through years have always had good wingers.

I'd also like to see us try for O'Toole. A bit of height and strength in midfield, I'd take him over Upson infact.

John Akinde rumoured to be off to Millwall....maybe depending on what league they're in?

John Egan is off to Brentford.

John Egan is off to Brentford.

Was just about to mention this.

For me, we simply have to go for Curtis Nelson at Plymouth. 22, captain with 230 appearances, strong, quick, athletic, and a leader. He's everything we need, but I can't help thinking a Championship club will take a punt on him.

So what most appear to want to do is replace shite with shite. We need 5 quality signings to add to what we have left and the youth. I have to believe and hope that is what we shall try to do, otherwise we will add 10-15 players who were no better than the players we are getting rid of.

I wouldn't get another keeper as Ramsdale can back up and you can still get an emergency loan on a goalkeep

Players in - Burn, Egan, Sawyers, Gilbey, O;Toole
Loans - Harry Chapman (boro), left back and back up striker

My Squad

Long
Ramsdale

Brayford
Burn
Egan

McGahey
Loan left back
K Wallace

Basham (play either RB, CB or midfield)

Whiteman
Gilbey
Reed
Scougall
O'Toole
Sawyers

Chapman (can play all over)

Sharp
Done
Adams
Calvert Lewin
Loan striker

That is 21 players including a few youngsters with experience.

Some decent signings there mate and well done for the effort put in, but that's 13 signings I make that you've got us down to sign. I would imagine given that Whiteman, Kelly, Kieran Wallace and the likes of the loan players like McNulty means that we're more likely to bring in about 6 new players and likes OF Sawers, Gilbey and Egan will all command a tribunial fee as they are under 24 and will have been offered new deals. I can see Buchanan coming if he's out of contract and Tafazoli, the rest I'm not so sure on because they'll be competition of a higher level for many of those guys than us, or they'e already at decent League One clubs like Millwall and they might only want a move to the Championship.

When you say "most want to replace shite with shite" specifically what players are you referring to?

Yeah, I did mention that I couldn't see it happening and that it might be a little ambitious but after reading the retained lis thread it may be more likely than you or me think. Well have to wait and swe I guess!

I think a lot of the players mentioned in this thread will be out of our range. I'm working on the assumption that we'll be competing on like for like wage terms with most of the league. Several of those mentioned will end up in the league above us. We need to try and secure who we can, quickly.

I'm going to go for a more conservative spending because all the vibes coming from the Lane are talking about budgets etc and I think we'll have to play many of last years squad. So assuming that none leave and no doubt a few will then I would like to see the following (based on budget)

Goalkeepers
Long
Ramsdale

Defenders
Brayford
Buchanan - out of contract and over 23 - free from Nortampton
Tafazoli - out of contract and over 23 - free from Mansfield
Baudry - out of contract and over 23 - free from Leyton Orient
Chris Basham
Graham Kelly

Centre Mids
Robbie Weir - released from Burton, now 27 and their fans are amazed he's been released, he is a combative midfielder, surely just what we need.
Paul Coutts Could well be off to Burton if Clough comes calling
Ben Whiteman
Louis Reed - Needs to get back to his best
Stefan Scougall - as above
Chris Basham

Wingers
Mark Duffy - we all know he would represent great value for money
Franck Moussa - got to be worth a contract if fit
Ricky Holmes - The "big money" ;-) signing. Twice made the league team of the season, I reckon for a transfer fee we'd get him what with the Wilder connection. Maybe £300,000.

Forwards
Che Adams
Billy Sharp
Marc McNulty - must be given another chance this season, Billy needs competition too.
Lee Novak - free and provides competition for Che. Endless workrate and decent in the air too.
DCL - maybe one season too early still and to go out on loan, but will add competition for Che if Wilder decides against another bigger guy signing.

The midfield is the biggest area where we're going to have to try many of last years squad unless we pay them off or other teams come in for them. There's many names from the other posters that are better than the above like Anthony Forde, Dan Burn and Curtis Nelson from Plymouth. But I can see them commanding too high wages and/or transfer/compensation fee for our current structure. We're still to an extent hamstrung by Clough's signings like Coutts and Scougall but that said they are two decent players if they apply themselves.

Barney with all due respect mate there's no way we'll be able to afford that team! Kaikai for starters. Palace rate him highly and he started their last game. If he goes out on loan again it'll no doubt be to improve him at a higher level than he was with Shrewsbury. Gilbey would never be a free because even if he rejects their contract offer he's under 24 and is rated very highly by them and therefore the fee would be decided by a tribunal. They'd say he was worth a million;we'd probably say £300,000 ish and it would probably be at least £500,000. Same theory for Nelson and Forde. Nthile is under contract but listed because he won't extend so that's another fee as is McGeehan. Sam Winnall?! The Dingles would probably want £800,000 ish for him and why would he leave them for another League One club, assuming they don't get promoted.

I think from all these suggested teams a few realistic players keep cropping up. They are Duffy and Tafazoli would be definitely affordable and would no doubt want to come here.

Comments taken, wasn't meant as anything too serious.
I allowed myself to dream for a while whilst I wrote it up.
You're probably right for what our budget will be.
However, a lot of those players should be perfectly realistic on a budget a club of this size should be working with.

John Akinde is a big man up top who's just got 23 for Barnet.

I'm starting to think Akinde would be a smart signing. I read somewhere that he has a relatively low release clause in his contract too. As you say, 23 in a very average Barnet team, and he's a good athlete. I also see he has 8 assists too which is quite impressive, suggesting he's a provider as well as a scorer. He's at a good age, he's had two very good seasons in a row and will be confident. There's no way he wouldn't at least be a massive improvement on Sammon and also an improvement on Adams alongside Sharp. And with a bit of luck, you could have another 20 goal striker on your hands.
