One of the most cringeworthy moments as a Blade fan

Now he is no longer our player I can now say how embarrassed I was after the final whistle at Selhurst Park in January 2020 when the Blades fans were singing non stop the welcome for Sander Berge for about 5 minutes. It was an over the top welcome. I nearly always welcome any new signing but when it comes to singing praises, I always give it time before deciding that he has fitted in well at SUFC. I admit at the time I was pleased when he signed for us and was hoping the £20M fee would be justified. Since then he often frustrated the life out of me because he wasnt quick or brave enough and was often beaten in the air by players a lot smaller than him.

Am surprised that Burnley went for Berge instead of Hamer.

Ståle Solbakken talks out of his arse when he slags us off as not being the right club for Berge.

Berge might be a nice guy and I wish him luck but he wasnt worth the fee we paid for him.
I'm surprised at that Silent Blade
Roughly, which Block were you sat/stood in?
It was joyous where we were.

The most cringeworthy times for me as a Blade were the Adrian Heath, David Weir and Nigel Adkins eras, and us losing to Yeovil in the playoffs, plus the agonising playoff final losses to Palace, Wolves, Burnley and Huddersfield. That’s when I’ve felt most embarrassed and despondent.

Singing a song about our record signing, coveted by many clubs in Europe at a time when we were on the crest of a wave, seemingly on the cusp of achieving something big, doesn’t even register.

Berge flattered to deceive and largely turned out to be a bust, but on that particular day against Palace it was a brilliant moment when we dared to dream.

A more cringeworthy Sander moment was when a journalist asked him whether he was happy that his mate Erling had drawn a blank against us at Wembley.

What did they expect him to say….. “yeah I bet he’s gutted his team just won 3 nil and reached the FA cup final”.

I dont remember us serenading a new signing like this and it was embarrassing
It started with wilder collecting him and escorting him around Sheffield.... With a 30 minute video of it... For fuck sake .. no other player git that treatment .. could see why wanker lundstrum was pissed off

It's partly a sign of the times thing though. In the days before the game, as the signing was completed, a "well known" AwayDay Blade was filmed singing the He's Norwegian song on Karaoke. That clip went viral. So, by game day, lots of Blades would have heard the song, giggled a bit, and were able to belt it out.

At the end of the serenade, a number of players and staff pointed Sander at Karaoke Guy and he walked over and handed him his shirt.

None of that opportunity to embed a song and earworm it existed when we signed (for eg) Sabella. Different times....

Other "cringe" moments as a Blade.

- the march round London by Sean bean to get us reinstated to the Prem
-the Mcabe banner
- most times Garyoke opens his gob but in particular against Millwall 18/19 match winner marine

Personally i thought it was a backing of the Blades fans for the club rather than just the player, back then i'd say we were at our peak and bringing Berge in was a huge signal of intent for what the club was doing. At least that's what we thought.

Berge was at United because he's proved that whilst he's got bags of talent, he's still got a long way to develop and the Championship has undoubtedly been good for him since getting over his injuries. He's had his ups and downs on the pitch but can't see that he'd have developed much more at a bigger club and in the premier league. Chances are if he'd gone to the big 6 he'd have been on the bench much more.

He'll do alright for Burnley and it's not a sky high fee.

The most cringeworthy moment for me was the opposite of the Sander thing.

Booing Richard Cresswell ON to the pitch on his debut against Ipswich in 2009.

Why?

Because he had the audacity to have played for Wednesday and Leeds at some point in his career.

Exhibit #436,989 of our fans being a bunch of utter fucking cuntwaffles.

He needed to be aware that he had to run those trotters off.

Turned out reet enough.

I wasn’t at the game but just to add to this, Sharp (I think I’ve remembered this right) was singing it on Five Live earlier that day which is where I first heard it, as part of an interview about Berge’s arrival. Also remember seeing tons of neutral fans absolutely lauding those post-match scenes and saying what a special club United looked etc.

It’s in one of them behind the scenes videos from when he signed.

Every time I see responses like that from the fans is my most cringeworthy moments as a blade.

True? There was a video! A beaming Chris Wilder driving a very bemused Sander round a tour of Blades pubs on the day he signed.
The video was actually meeting him in the copthorne & then driving him to Shirecliffe on his first day,via Bramall Lane & Hanover way

None of them anywhere near as cringeworthy as breaking out transfer record and the fans who had travelled 200 miles to an away game giving him a welcome to remember

Top player that rarely hit the heights for us and it seems to me that putting berge in Lundstams place was the high water mark for wilders team. But I would have liked to see him stay and kick on while surrounded by a team that he could perform in.

They were absolute salad days for us, we’d broken our transfer record for Berge, I’m sure on sky sports news they showed a clip of a different player turning up at Man U’s training ground in the back of a car and people thought it was Berge signing for them - that was how highly rated he was.

We had a manager that could barely put a foot wrong, we were top 6 in the premier league having been 11th in league one 4 years earlier.

The club was on an absolute high, the likes of which are unlikely to be repeated for a very long time and let’s be honest for most fans hadn’t been seen before either.

It seemed like everyone was United - manager was a blade, captain was a blade, we had a core of players that were peaking and honestly I think it would have been quite entitled and arrogant of us to not recognise how crazy that journey had been.

Getting caught up in the moment? Yeah a bit but that’s what being a fan is all about. I thought it was absolutely fantastic when we ‘serenaded’ Sander, what a welcome for him - he also remembers it fondly - don’t forget it was a huge coup for us to have got him, imagine if we’d not made him feel so welcome and he’d decided he’d go somewhere else instead after 6 months…

I’m pleased he played for us though. You could see he is a thoroughbred. Just a pity we didn’t put more of his type in the stable to nurture so we could look forward to winning a few next season 😐
he may have been a thorough bred but needed re shoeing

Some other cringey moments were us signing Marlon King and Ched being sent down, oh and the battle of Brammal lane. This doesn’t even come close.

Cringeworthy moments? Any photo of the chairman and manager stood beside a new signing holding up Blades shirt/scarf/badge between the 3 of them. Christ!
The photo that Mcabe engineered of Currie with Pele as if they had always been bosom buddies (Pele quietly muttering ' Who the fuck are you?').
Actually, any photo with Mcabe in it....

The highest the club has been in the modern era and the highest its ever likely to be for the foreseeable future. Fail to see how anyone can be embarrassed by the atmosphere that day.

We were finally becoming relevant on the football map and making big signings but apparently we were celebrating it too much. Premature maybe, but if we cant celebrate at times like that we might as well give up now.

Labelling it as one of the most cringeworthy moments as a Blade seems fucking outrageous to me, when stacked up against some of the other shit we’ve put up with. This summer would be straight in the top 5 in the embarrassment stakes.
Blades we might all be,but we don't necessarily mirror each other's feelings. We're not cloned bots just yet🙏👍
